I've been taking guitar lessons from Paul Warren at the Raleigh Music Academy for over 4 years. In that time I've been able to go from not knowing how to play to learning and playing songs that I listen to regularly. Each students lessons are tailored to what they are interested in, with the instructors guiding students and suggesting techniques or songs that can help them improve. There are two things that really set the RMA apart: First are the top-notch artists that they are able to host for workshops and clinics. I've seen Greg Howe, Andy Timmons, Andy Wood, Chris Poland and Guthrie Govan perform and instruct, all in an intimate setting. Second are the monthly student shows. All students have the opportunity to play a song with other students in a live setting to family and friends. This is a great learning experience and gives validation to the time spent learning new techniques and songs. If you are looking to learn guitar, bass, percussion, piano, banjo, mandolin, fiddle or voice, the RMA is the place to go. I'm glad I did.

My son took his first official drum kit lessons with Clay. He was a great teacher with the perfect blend of technique, rudiments and practical application as well as allowing my son to explore music that he was interested in. Clay was incredibly professional and maintained high standards while still being laid back and accessible. Great for both his beginning lessons as well as further down the road when preparing for challenging auditions and concerts!

Adam is a great teacher. To start, he is a personable guy; I have never found lessons overly tedious in part because he makes people feel at ease. He is also flexible to your interests and abilities in music so that you literally start learning songs and styles you like from day one. Adam's grasp of music theory and, in my case, the guitar, is routinely amazing in its complexity and depth. On multiple occasions, if I was having particular trouble with certain chords on the guitar or something like that, he was able to provide alternative methods or styles that were easier for me, which I appreciated. Not only that, he's able to break those concepts down so that even someone with little exposure to music like myself could understand it. Within a 4 months of lessons with Adam, I was able competently play entry-level songs and am still improving by the week with his help.

I've had the pleasure of working with Billy for the better part of 3 years. Billy has fulfilled and surpassed every goal and objective that we were looking for when we brought our young daughters to Progressive Music Center. My daughters take Piano, Drums and Vocal lessons at Progressive. From the outset, Billy has lived up to his excellent reputation as the Preeminent resource for Music education in the Triangle Area by providing individually catered lesson plans along with caring, relationship-based instructors. Not only have my girls progressed musically in every way imaginable, but the program(s) that Billy provides serve as an enriching part of our lives socially and have helped build their self-confidence. We enjoy his passion for music, his experienced direction and our relationship with him has provided limitless opportunity for our family...it continues to be a great ride!

Having Joe Westerlund as a drum instructor was truly a great experience. I came in as an adult looking to get back into drumming after having played as a teenager. Joe was sensitive to this and planned my lessons accordingly. After 5 minutes with him, I could tell Joe was going to be a blast to work with for half an hour per week. He was quick to cater the lessons to whatever genre of music I was interested in playing which may or may not have matched his personal tastes. Which, to be fair, it's hard to pigeonhole Joe into a specific genre given his vast experience and wide array of bands he's played and toured the world with. His positive attitude and gentle demeanor was comforting to me as a newbie to the lesson format as an adult and I found our time together to be quite enjoyable. Not to mention Joe's technical abilities and musical talents which are fantastic. If I were to recommend anyone I know, kid or adult, to a drum instructor, it would hands down be Joe Westerlund. Besides being a killer drummer, he's also a genuine, great guy.

Wow! I was very apprehensive this being my first piano lesson but I was impressed. Dennis was kind patient and detailed. I normally don't leave comments but this just had to be told. I actually learned a whole song in one lesson! I hope to do more lessons with Dennis!

About

Hello! I am currently accepting students for private one-on-one lessons on drum set, snare drum, mallet or keyboard. I also teach reading, hand-and-foot technique, four-limb independence, transcribing songs, ear-training skills, and style-awareness. My drumming palate covers Bebop jazz, bass and drums, calypso, soca, salsa, New Orleans, reggae, country, rock and hard rock/fusion double-bass drumming. This is not just a list of things that I have learned out of a book. The list of styles includes gigs that I have played in the past or are currently playing. If you are interested in drum set, I can help you to become the best player that you can be, or if you are just interested in pure chops, we can do that as well. I am a full-time, professional musician who has been teaching and playing for over twenty years. Since moving to Raleigh in 1997, I have played and/or recorded with many regional and local groups. I am qualified to teach beginners with no musical experience (including children), all the way up to semi-professional and professional players who want to take their drumming to the next level. Please visit my website for more information. Once there, you can view my videos or listen to my work on various albums in the audio section. If you are interested in seeing me play live, please visit my MySpace page for upcoming shows. I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks in advance.
