I hired Sergio and his crew to repair a staircase and replace a carpeted area with engineered flooring. What I loved about this team was the responsiveness to any question and their punctuality. I've worked with a lot of contractors, and it was good to know that these men would arrive when they said they would, unlike many others. Also, I was completely comfortable with leaving them to do their work while I ran errands or worked outside the house. I rate them 4 stars only because I noticed a problem with the work, after it was completed. However, even though Sergio had been paid in full, he responded immediately to my concern and he came out to assess the problem within a day. The issue was fixed to my complete satisfaction. I think this is entirely worthy of note. Many contractors might have been hard to find, since they'd already been paid, and I might have been stuck with a bad feeling and an unsatisfactory outcome. Instead, Sergio came out to see the problem, discussed possible solutions, and scheduled his men to do the work, all in a timely manner. I am very pleased with the outcome and would not hesitate to hire this company for future projects.

I am having my house done in 2 separate stages and the first part of the job has been completed. John was easy to work with. He had a great working knowledge of the product he was representing. The only raspy for a 4 rating is because I was unaware that John would outsource the job. Since the flooring is not complete as of yet, I cannot give 5 stars..

We hired Rob to repair the deck on our rental property. We needed the flooring and railing completely replaced. Rob's work was just beautiful--including routed edges, diagonal seamless board flooring and stylish railings. The work looks very professional. The job was completed in just a couple of days. We couldn't be happier. We will definitely hire Rob for future work and highly recommend him.

Replaced linoleum with luxury vinyl planks in kitchen, Jenn came to our house with samples. She was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She was very responsive to our needs and any questions we had. Installers did a great job, they were on-time (on a Sunday), friendly and efficient. Will use Traditions Carpet & Flooring for any flooring needs in the future!

Chris and his crew refinished all our downstairs flooring and installed site finished red oak throughout upstairs. Love our floors!! Was concerned with the timeline as we only had two weeks to complete the job before we had to move in and they finished on time as promised. Would definitely recommend Epic flooring to others.

I recently had a painter not show up last minute before I moved furniture into my new house. I contacted Ron through this site and he came out the same to do an estimate the same day. He was able to finish the job before my furniture was moved in and also take care of some other jobs around the house. Ron is easy to talk to and does very good work at a reasonable price. I would not hesitate to hire him again.

Nick is extremely knowledgeable and is doing a phenomenal job. He was also instrumental in saving me $100's of dollars by providing my hardwood flooring installers a tip to eliminate cementing a part of the flooring. Highly recommend Nick and will use him for other home projects.

Dave did an excellent job and was professional on all levels. He went above and beyond in helping us remodel after damage was done to our home We have used him for other projects since, as well as recommended him to others. It was important to go with someone who has been in the business for many years and he proved his knowledge by doing the job right and problem solving an issue that came up regarding flooring.

Pullen Contracting was extremely professional, fair, and did outstanding work. I worked directly with Bill Pullen and couldn't have been more impressed with how easy he made everything. We had what I considered to be a few "tough" problems, but he made it seem easy and he and his team did the work quickly and for a very fair price. Drywall and painting work was seamless and blends in perfectly with each room he worked in. Mr. Pullen is friendly, offers excellent suggestions about problems that may have caused repair needs, and his work matched his estimate. I will not hesitate to go directly to Pullen Contracting for any future needs. I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for drywall or other contracting work. My husband and I couldn't be more pleased. Thank you to Pullen Contracting for solving a problem for us and making it painless!

I needed new carpeting, some vinyl with repair to the underlayment, and to have hardwoods refinished. I chose Ortiz Flooring from the 5 companies that responded to and quoted my Thumbtack request. Alvaro was wonderful from the start, he came to the house with samples and provided a quote immediately. He responded to all my questions and requests without delay. He was at all times very pleasant, professional and easy to work with. His price was very good, and within my budget. The results: I could not be happier! The carpeting is beautiful, the vinyl and repaired floor is nice and solid. The refinished hardwoods are stunning. Everything was completed with care and precision, I absolutely can not find any part of the job that isn't perfect! Alvaro took care of everything, and his crews left no mess at all. I would not hesitate to recommend Ortiz Flooring to my very best and most particular friends, and if I ever need more flooring Alvaro will be the only person I call.

Matt and his wife Yvette were very professional and meticulous with the installation of my hardwood flooring. They showed up when scheduled, were always pleasant and respectful of my home and were knowledgeable of their trade. I felt it was a bonus that Yvette was on the job since having a female in the house during renovations made me feel more comfortable as a woman home alone with construction going on.

We hired Omar to install 850 square feet of engineered hardwood flooring. Initially planned on floating the floor but then decided to glue it down per his recommendation. He was very hardworking and got the job done quickly (even staying late into the evening to get it done). We made an error and didn’t order enough flooring but Omar happily came back to finish the job when we got the second box in. Would definitely hire again!

Kevin was the first one to respond to my inquiry on Thumbtack about replacing flooring. After speaking to him Friday afternoon, he was on site Saturday morning to assess the job at hand and due to a great recommendation from him was hired shortly thereafter. What we were thinking might be a two day job was beautifully completed in one. At no time during the day did they seem rushed or in a hurry AND Kevin helped me negotiate getting old furniture removed while he was here! He and his staff are professional, timely, courteous, respectful of me, my family, my home, my pets and genuinely super nice guys. I’ve already advised that we’ll be calling him for our next big project! You should too!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
