Nick has performed a wide variety of services for my wife and I, including painting, constructing a gate, installation of recessed lighting, staining our deck, patching our roof, repairing sheet rock damaged by water, among other things. Nick does great work and has a very diverse skill set, he has been knowledgeable about every issue that has arisen at our home. Additionally, he has come out several times on short notice (either before/after his regularly scheduled appointments or on weekends) to deal with time sensitive issues, including a leak in the roof on a rainy Saturday morning. Finally, his wife Kim does a great job coordinating Nick's schedule with whatever you have going on in your own life and gets back to you very quickly regarding job inquiries, change orders, and other administrative matters. We highly recommend!

Bruce did a great job putting up the molding and making the corners meet. I'm pleased with the work and the outcome of how it looks. However: please be advised he doesn't paint or caulk the molding and put puddy over the nail holes. He just does more of the carpentry part of it. He did tell me he wasn't going to paint it up front so that was not a surprise to me. But I didn't know he wasn't going to caulk it. I think he assumed that I knew caulking was a part of the painting job I'd have to hire someone else to do. So If you need someone to do the entire job, just be advised he won't be able to do that. 160 feet of crown molding. The job was around $550

Roberto did 2 jobs for me. One was Drywall repair. He is very meticulous and does excellent drywall work. I will use him again for all my drywall repair work, personal home or rental! Roberto and his painting crew also repainted an uptown townhome. They did good work. Someone in his crew did not use a drop cloth and paint got on the floor/rug. Roberto came back and cleaned it up. I will use him again for painting more of my rental properties. I will do a better job emphasizing his drywall meticulousness needs to apply to all his painters too. I had the crown molding repainted in my foyer, hallway and living room. It was a dark brown and made the first floor look small and chopped. I'm a perfectionist and was looking for a painter who is meticulous and paid attention to detail. After reading the reviews of Fine Finishes Custom Painting, I found what I was looking for. I saw words like "meticulous" and phrases like "did not spill a drop of paint". Consequently, I didn't even bother to get a second estimate. Zachary and Sean are truly professionals. They made sure anything that was not going to get painted was completely covered in plastic (furniture, floor, walls, bookcases). They painted the molding multiple times until they were satisfied that no color showed through, and caulked all edges so it blended with the ceiling. Additionally, they painted the white shoe molding around my bookcases to blend in with the wood. Zachary took extra time to try to find the right color paint for that, and even had a local paint store make up a custom color. And true to the reviews, no paint was spilled! All in all, I'm ecstatic with the way everything looks! My rooms look like they're completely new. I will definitely be hiring Fine Finishes for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.
