We are very pleased with our choice of Frank to do the job of putting together and installing our IKEA kitchen. Anyone who has put together IKEA furniture before knows it's quite a task! He is a family-owned business and works wonderfully with his son and wife. It was a pleasure getting to know them, all while watching our kitchen come together! Frank is thorough and precise about his decisions, always making sure we were happy. He saved us a good chunk of money, costing significantly less than the cost of the IKEA installers, while still doing a professional job. Best of all, we created a friendship with him and his family. They were so sweet to our 5 & 2 year old sons and were beyond trustworthy. Sometimes when you hire someone to do work in your home that requires a few days to accomplish, you can't wait to just have it done and have 'strangers' out of your house. I can honestly say that it was hard to say goodbye to him and his family when the job was done. Thank you Frank! We would do it all over again if we had to. We will add photos of the finished kitchen when our backsplash is done later this week!

I cannot say enough good thing about this man and the quality of his work. I have had so many contractors in the past who just want to take your money but do a half baked job. Brian is clean and courteous and really knows his stuff. The tile back splash job he did for me would stand up to any that you'd find in million dollar homes. Brian is a keeper.

Started off great, tile work was great. Pocket door install pretty great. Back end of the project it started to go down hill. One guy tipped over a cactus, broke a wind chime, and lied about it later. They never did fix it liie they said they would. They dumped grout/thinset waste on my hydrangea bush, effectively killing it. Took them 3 days to collect their trash after project was completed - I paid extra for that "service." My one baby gate went missing during their work, I used it to keep my dogs corralled into areas of the house (one guy did mention he had a 10 month old at home). So where is it now? After project was finished they came back wanting even more money they "forgot", even though it was 1,000 more than quoted, paid. I didnt even respond to that! They installed the medicine cabinet upside down even though I told them 3 times not to - he said he "decided it looked better that way!" :O left haze on tile , and large dry grout splotches on the ceramic tub after installation - I ended up having to do it/scrape it off. The reason I hired someone was due to my having arthritis, which they knew, so I really wasn't happy about that. Sloppy caulk jobs, Sink was overly/bulky caulked and crooked (oval) - asked them to fix that which they did. Sink still crooked! There's more, but you get the idea. It started off so well, it was disappointmenting in the end. I work in real estate, and would have gladly spread their good name around if they'd done a better job. I even cooked for them and gave them stuff to drink every day. Made me sad. :(

Steve came originally to install a French door at the back of my house, but I ended up hiring him for a tile job for my fireplace as well. He showed up like he said, gave a very good price and did excellent work! We are so happy with him and his work that he will be putting our new bamboo flooring down as well! So glad I found him!

My family and I have been searching for a "wow" cleaner, and I am so glad to say that the search is over! Daniel and his staff are professional, communicating with me before, during and after the sevice. My bathroom tile has never been cleaner and they even cleaned the refrigerator! The hardwood floors were shiny and the whole house smelled great. Zero complaints. A++

We hired Confident Home Solutions to redo a bathroom to make it handicap accessible. Our home is older and none of the bathrooms were large enough for wheelchair access so Darian incorporated an adjoining storage closet. His suggestions for tile and counters were spot on--he even lays his own tile because he can't find anyone else who can meet his standards. His innovative use of space and attention to detail was amazing. We haven't found anything we don't like. We also liked him personally--nice when he had to be in our home for several weeks!

We originally hired Jaime and his crew for tiling but they also did some drywall and painted the peeling exterior of our wood house. The whole place looks better as a result of their work. They were very professional and easy to work with. Thanks a bunch!

I went with my gut instinct and chose Kimberley and Patrick to re-tile my guest bathroom floor. They were quick to respond and answered all of my questions. The thing that set them apart from the rest was that they eased my concern about leaving subcontractors at my house to help with the job. They assured me that it would just be the two of them, and they held to their word. They estimated how long the job would take, and they worked very hard to make that happen. Highly pleased and definitely have them on my "call list" should I need any other projects completed (which knowing me...I will!). Great job, guys!

We looked at countertops what seemed liked forever and had decided to contract with one of the big box home improvement stores before being directed to Fireplace and Granite by my Daughter-in-Law. I was amazed at the selection and the price. We Now have beautiful Granite kitchen counters with Ceramic tile backsplash. Before you buy someplace else, you need to check here. I highly recommend them and would use them again.

Russ did an outstanding job installing a new tile floor in our hall bathroom. The job involved demoing the old tile floor, installing the new floor, and resetting the toilet. The job was completed in a day with minimal disruption and at a very fair price. We highly recommend Ruckman Renovations and would not hesitate to call on Russ again for another quality renovation job. Russ is a skilled professional who gives great customer service!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

      • Old standard or electric toothbrush
      • Stiff bristle brush
      • Spray bottle
      • White vinegar
      • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

      • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
        • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.
