John Doll has been my friend and colleague for over two years. He is a very talented guitarist in many genres, e.g. classical, rock, blues, etc. He is also an excellent teacher. I observed him in graduate school when he taught group guitar classes to non music majors. Any child or adult would be lucky to have John as their instructor for guitar.

John Doll has been something of a wonder in teaching my child, who is 8 years old. Somehow he coaxes real songs out of a little guy who hardly ever practices. John can play anything you ask or a child would ask, without thinking twice. This is great when it comes to putting a classical guitar spin on ACDC, then morphing into James Taylor, Eagles, Taylor Swift, then hopping back to the lovely Ode to Joy. He is a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend him! -Elizabeth N.

I highly recommend John. Word of advise: If he has an opening, take advantage of it quickly!

Nicholas really enjoyed having you as a teacher, John. He's learned a lot and really wants to continue with you again. Your calmness and mannerism are perfect for him. The only thing I could say about improving anything is that my husband would've liked to see him playing more "songs" - I know that he learned a lot, but I think he would like to be able to see "results" for the time he spent in lessons. So, maybe when he starts back up, he could get a book to work out of now that he has gotten some chords down. Thanks for all you've done so far and we look forward to continuing!!

Thanks for the review, Theresa! I have really enjoyed working with Nicholas. I think he has gained useful knowledge and skills that he can draw upon to keep moving forward. I appreciate your critique, and I will certainly take it into consideration. As a teacher, I'm always discovering how to become more effective, and I modify my approach as I go, based on numerous factors. With most of my younger students (about 5-14y.o.), I do have a book I like to work through. With older students, like Nicholas, I prefer to direct them to online resources where they can find free tablature and sheet music to work on songs they like. That way, the lessons can focus more on practical knowledge and skills, like strumming & picking techniques, new chords and scales, how chords work together, etc. Outside of lessons, I encourage students to listen to music, watch guitarists on youtube (a very undervalued resource), and work on new songs from tablature. I'm always happy to help students work on a specific song during a lesson, but I like for that to be of their own initiative (except for young students). I was very pleased with the initiative I saw Nicholas taking, so I hope he keeps up the good work. It's also important to remember that peaks, valleys, and plateaus are a normal part of the process. What's important is sticking with it. -John

John is a wonderful, patient teacher. He works hard to teach to the interests and tastes of his students than taking a 'one-size-fits-all' approach straight from a book. My son's skill and interest has increased dramatically under John's tutilage.
