Jason did a great job replacing my toilet. Got back to me very quickly and kept in touch throughout the process. He methodically took a stressful situation for me and made it 'back to normal'. I greatly appreciate good communication and execution.

Excellent job. When they came out to inspect the water heater they discovered it was not up to code. They inspected, cleaned and drained the water heater. Came back couple of days later to bring the water heater and garbage disposal up to code. City inspected and have passed and are now certified. I appreciate their candor regarding not meeting city code since we intend to sell the property. Reasonably priced.

Matt removed my old waste disposal, kitchen faucet and over-the-range microwave then installed all the replacements. Every part of the project was done with care and attention to detail. He even changed the drain pipes under the sink as part of the job with no extra charge. I will definitely hire Matt again. He's talented and wonderful!

Dan went above and beyond the call to repair the leaking cracked drain pipe in the wall behind my kitchen cabinets. Another plumber wouldn't even consider repair without me tearing out the cabinets and granite counter-top. They have won a lifetime customer.

I found American Rooter via Thumbtack. I've had great luck going this route in the past and being that water was leaking from an upstairs shower to the kitchen directly below it, I figured I'd try that luck again. I'm glad I did. The company responded quickly and even called to see if they could come early. This worked perfectly for me. The guy who did my repairs, Alex, was professional and kept me informed through the whole process. He was courteous as well (as a member of the house was asleep). Really a great experience.

Mr. Allis provided bathroom toliet repair. Stool needed new seal to stop it from leaking into the basement when flushed. While there he also caulked around the bathtub and shower/and unplugged the bathtub drain. We were very pleased with how quickly he got to us, He took care of the problem and didnt charge us an arm and a leg. We were pleased and hired him to take care of kitchen sink/dishwasher hook-ups etc for our kitchen as well. Honest/Fair pricing, takes pride in his work.

The actual service provider was Brian Intrieri, who is associated with, but not actually employed by "Drain Smith." Brian provided excellent service; he showed up on time, diagnosed and repaired the problem, and charged exactly what was agreed upon in the initial quote. I really appreciate his quick response to my service request and his coming out the next day.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
