This was my first experience with Thumbtack - and I am very pleased! I had all the tile removed in my relatively new home, due to a poor installation job, and my house was a mess! Fine, powdery cement dust everywhere! I contacted Mina thru her Thumbtack correspondence and set up a day to do the cleaning - told her I would like to get the house done in short span of time. We set up a day and she let me know that if she didn't get the job completed that day, she would come back the next day to finish! She came on the expected day and brought 3 helpers with her! The job was done in a short amount of time and the house is very clean! All the women were friendly and kept busy until the job was done. What a whirlwind of activity! I was so pleased with the results, I set up a day and time for a follow up, and probably will keep them coming every few weeks! Julie

We had extensive hail damage to our property during the recent storms and Sarah responded quickly, walked us through the insurance claim process and even handled dealing with insurance to cover things they left out. We were so pleased with the process and when the roof was replaced it was like magic, we left for work and came home to a new roof and no sign there was even anyone there! We were impressed with the follow up a week later to see if everything was ok and if we had questions. I would highly recommend Rooforia and their crew, very professional and excellent quality.

Excellent handyman. We were moving and needed a door installed asap. Tom was there the next day and had the time and patience to make sure the door was installed perfectly. He also stained the door for us. He is very professional, dependable and reasonably priced. I will recommend him to family & friends.

They fixed a frozen pipe in my home. They were at my house within two hours of calling. Very friendly and professional. Only drawback was that they don't fix drywall after repair, so I will need to hire someone else for that now. Overall pleased with service.

Chris did a wonderful job on our home- we replaced all the carpet and tile in our house which was part of a huge remodeling project. He was $1200 less than the next lowest bid and went above and beyond for us- helping with loading furniture we sold on Craigslist, bringing in our trash cans, looking after our dog etc. We have already recommended him to numerous friends and will call him for any future projects.

Tim did a great job installing a window and a closet organizer for me. It was nice to find someone that does small jobs like mine. Previously, I couldn't get contractors to call me back because the job wasn't big enough. Tim was very thorough right down to cleaning up after himself. Ellen M

We have been using United Services for the past three years and have been extremely satisfied with the service, quality of products, pricing and customer service. Our latest home improvement, the exterior of our home, was updated with James Hardy siding, 6 inch gutters, painting, roof and exterior doors. The service we received from Mark Passer and his crews was outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied, made adjustments when required and ensured we were keep up-to-date as the project progressed. We have no hesitation in recommending United Services Home Improvements for all your home projects.

Greg and his crew at Premiere Home Deigns really helped me out when I was in a jam. My roof not only needed to be replaced, but due to a shoddy replacement done before I purchased the property, there were some structural issues that had caused it to start scalloping. I had one company give me an estimate that seemed a bit high, without addressing the structural issues and one who gave me a fair quote, but couldn’t find a crew who was willing to do the work since it wasn’t a simple “scrape & skin.” Greg and his crew were able to diagnose the problem, fix it and give me a brand new straight roof for less than either of the other companies I had contacted. I have recommended Premiere Home Deigns to many people based on their honesty, professionalism and commitment to quality construction and will continue to do so.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
