First of all, I have had far more success with contractors on Thumbtack than with either Home Advisor or Angie’s List – and this has been in three different states: VA, MA, NH. I submitted a request to Thumbtack on a Monday for someone to mow my very large front lawn within the week (by Saturday morning at the latest). Got what seemed like automated, property-sight-unseen quotes from three different companies – for $35, $40, and $75. I figured that once any of them actually saw the property, the minimum quote would be closer to $75 or more, but I chose to contact the $40 guys because I had read very good reviews of them. They responded promptly (via Thumbtack’s online messaging system) and told me (after I’d asked) that their price might be adjusted up depending upon the size of the lawn once they saw it (no surprise to me there), and that they would visit my property on Thursday, and call me with a new quote. I was fine with this. Meanwhile, later in the day on Monday, I heard via Thumbtack’s online messaging system from Jerry of J&M – which was NOT one of the original three companies that had auto-responded to me. Jerry requested my phone number, we talked that evening, and he told me he could be at my property Friday, firm up a quote, and do the job that day (Friday) if I wanted and was agreeable with his quote. Well Thursday comes and goes, and I never hear from the grass guys I had originally contacted (and I STILL haven’t heard back from them, a month later). Friday comes, and Jerry messages me before noon as to when he’ll be at my property (within the hour). Then he calls me with the quote ($75), and I give him the job, and he does it. He even tried to send me photos of the job he did, but ran into technical difficulties. BTW, Jerry had initially told me that he “couldn’t imagine” he’d be charging me more than $50 to do my front lawn – but this was sight unseen, and to be fair, the home sits on 1.55 acres (which he didn’t know), and the largest portion of it is the lawn in front of the house. My husband has said that if HE were to mow the lawn, we’d have to buy him a riding lawn mower - and we’ve joked about getting a golf cart just to ride down the long driveway to the mailbox, so we do feel that Jerry’s adjusted quote of $75 was fair. Jerry was responsive, prompt, the only one who actually followed through on what he’d said he’d do, fairly priced, and did a good job. What more can you ask for? I recommend him, and would absolutely hire him again.
