You Can’t Go Wrong With Such Great Work As a retiree, living on a fixed income and not being a professional in the building/construction trades it’s always a bit nerve-racking when faced with multiple issues to maintain your home investment. The Colonial portion of the homestead was built in 1750 and the addition is an authentic Post-N-Beam Revival making this a valuable property historically and culturally. With this type of property, quality cannot be compromised! I had six immediate responses to my request for roofing repairs initially. So, let’s talk about the ONE that got the job(s). L&K Construction gets five stars from me in every category. Wayne returned my initial call very quick. He showed up at my residence, surveyed the repair work needed and then promptly provided the explanation of the scope of the repairs. He also provided an estimate of the proposed job in a very professional manner. Now here is where the differences began to surface that separate the field. Wayne is very knowledgeable on all phases of construction from demo and rehab to new construction. As a roofer, Wayne was tasked with cleaning up shabby work of previous roofers. Previous work that was done poorly causing leakage and potentially costly damages to not only the exterior but the interior of the property. I was more than pleased with his work on this task and immediately expanded the scope of work and employed him with additional projects – cedar roofing and siding repairs. If your doing cedar you need to know what your doing! He was back on site within a few days! Having been in the property business I understood the value of a firm like L&K Construction managed by the generational experience of Wayne Lupien. Wayne was honest and candid in his explanations and his estimates. The jobs were excellent! The cleanup was excellent with no walk around problems. The price was fair and reasonable. As a matter of fact, L&K Construction will be coming back to do more work with not only roofing and siding but with masonary work. You can bet I will be informing my friends and acquaintances of the professional expertise of L&K Construction. So, if you are looking for professional work at a reasonable price with no sacrifice on quality to get that level of cost-to-benefit ratio, call Wayne at L&K Construction - you’ll be glad you did!

Better Home Improvement installed new vinyl siding, windows and gutters on my home. They did an outstanding job in improving the curb appeal of my home. They were conscientious, hardworking, fair and responsive. They quoted an affordable price and despite lots of rain and a delay in getting the windows, worked hard to complete the job. I appreciate that they are a family-owned and operated business and used locally made products. I would use them again.

Paul helped repair our basement's structural problem that was revealed after a water leak from our kitchen ruined our basement ceiling. He came up with a solution by adding an additional support post next to the existing one and tied the support beams in. The posts were sheet rocked and made into a beautiful column. The support beam above was sheet rocked as well and was tied in nicely. He re-installed the basement ceiling tile system as well. My basement looks better than it did before the water damage! No more ugly metal posts in the middle of our basement. I actually enjoy being down there now. Paul went the extra mile by offering to add in a sheet rock repair in my kitchen that had been annoying me for a while. Paul started and completed the project the same week he quoted us a price.

We recently had our roof replaced by NH Grand Roofs. I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience. Chris was great from the initial visit to do the estimate, through the job completion and cleanup. He communicated well every step of the way so there was never a question as to the status or what was going on. He even called after the dumpster was hauled away to make sure I double checked for any nails that may have fallen out of the dumpster that they may have missed. The crew was polite and professional, providing quick and high quality work, finishing the job a day ahead of schedule. They also spent a lot of time cleaning up to ensure the littlest pieces of scrap made it into the dumpster. The roof has a lifetime warranty backing up the high quality material and installation. There were plenty of choices on roofing material and colors and we were walked through the advantages of each to help us make the right decision. I would highly recommend NH Grand Roofs if you are looking for a quality, long lasting roof installed with attention to detail and a positive experience from start to finish. I'm definitely a happy customer in Chester, NH.

Sentry was a wonderful company to work with. My project manager, TJ was great to work. He was more than willing to take calls and walk me through the process and the materials that are being used. The crew that showed up to install the roof where professional and made every possible effort to get every nail and scrap material left behind. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to have a roof installed.

I thought that Stephen was knowledgeable about how to best update my grandmother’s home for her wheelchair by installing ramps, widening her doors, adding railings and repairing her central cooling system. He also installed laminate floors in her kitchen and hallways.

Jesse and his team did a fantastic job our our roof repair project. He was quick to respond, flexible in his options for how to get it done in our budget, and he stuck to the price he quoted, which was very reasonable. They also didn't mind working in the snow, which came a bit early this year, making it that much more of a pain but also that much more important for us to get it done. I've seen my share of hackers and corner-cutters out there, or people who just won't get back to you if you're job isn't $10,000, and I'm happy to have found Jesse and LRC. I would definitely hire him again.

I hired Anthony for a roof repair. He came out to my home on one day notice (which I greatly appreciated) and completed the job quickly and efficiently. He is a good communicator with his customers. He is knowledgeable about building materials, roofing, flashing and water control - important issues for New England roofs. He is also very concerned about the quality of his work being done correctly. I am planning to hire him for a bigger project and will update my review. He's a nice guy who wants to build things correctly!

Jim, Terry and John have done numerous projects on my house. One of the bigger ones were removing 4 layers of shingles, adding decking and then shingling the roof. It came out fantastic and they were excellent through the process working with my girlfriend and keeping the place clean. We all know how important that is! They also painted the exterior of the house this past summer. Again a top notch experience. It went quickly and smoothly. Very happy with the results. Also I should mention they have given very reasonable prices. I had the roof quoted by others at ridiculous prices and A-Tact did it for almost 25% less than their competitors! Definitely check these guys out!

About

My father has been in the roofing trade for over 30 years, and I have been up on the roof with him ever since I was brave enough to climb up the ladders. There are few people who enjoy the job, but I am not one of them. I take great pride in seeing the customer pleased with my work, and I can only get better as the years go on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
