I hired Wayne to stop a leak I was having from a skylight window. A roofing company had told me that the leak was coming from the window itself, not the roof. A new skylight would be a very expensive repair, and I didn't feel my window appeared to have anything wrong with it. I called Wayne for a second opinion. He came out promptly to take a look at it, and agreed that he thought the issue was in the roof. He quoted me a very reasonable price to come and repair around the window. I decided to give him a try. During the next big rainstorm, the window still leaked, but much less. I contacted Ray and told him this. He said he would be back the next day. He arrived as promised and made some more repairs without any further cost involved. This past weekend we had a major rainstorm and I had no leaking at all. I would definitely use L&K Construction again when I need some repairs done around my house. I really appreciated how Ray stood behind his work and got the job done promptly.

Stormworks exceeded my expectations for customer service and quality of workmanship. My new roof is beautiful. The crew was very efficient , there was no damage to my shrubs and cleanup was thorough. Pricing was very fair. Sean was on the job and checked all phases of the work and inspected the final completed project. I would highly recommend Sean Green and Stormworks for your roofing project.

Overall, we had a tremendous experience with H&R roofing! Ray and his crew kept us informed of the progress every step of the way. Unfortunately, we were hit with some unexpected challenges during our home renovation, but Ray and his crew provided us with reassurance and sound advice during this time. Their work was clean and well-done. We are impressed by their attention to detail. I would certainly recommend using H&R roofing for any roofing, siding, window projects!

DeCarney roofing did an amazing job. After the crazy nor'easter laste weekend, I had some damaged shingles. They managed to squeeze me in after a previous client, and fixed my damaged roof right away for a very reasonable price. On top of that, Mario was very friendly and pointed out several things about roofing as he was making repairs. In hindsight, he probably should have charged me for the lesson as well as the roof repair. My roof is older, and when I replace it Decarney Roofing will be my first choice for the company to do the work.

We worked with Steve and Joe for an asphalt roof, soffit ventilation, and a roof repair on a sun room from a fallen tree. Steve was great to work with and he was the most communicative of the 10 or so roofing estimates we inquired about. I asked many technical questions as I am an engineer and very detail oriented by nature. They did everything they said they would do and did a quality job. Steve stuck out from the beginning as he called our town building department to find our local codes to find out what was legal as other conractrors were saying that you could put a metal roof over 2 layers of asphalt roof. The roof and sunroom repair was done over 2 days and they cleaned up the yard pretty well. Steve was always easy to get a hold of and really had awesome customer service. They are not the cheapest gig in town but you can trust them and they do quality work. I would hire again. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about my experience

John was a pleasure to work with. His master carpenter, Dave was easy to work with and helped to repair a badly rotted screen porch. I hope to hire them to repair my roof this summer.

Very nice, could tell right away he has a great personality so he was easy to work with. Came right out and gave us a great price on the roof we needed done. Arrived on time this morning, worked through the day to get our roof done before the Nor Easter hits tomorrow. Professional, great work, cleaned up everything and even took some other things we had from a previous construction job and gave us a fair price to haul it off for us. Also..my dog liked him immediately. For you dog owners, you'll understand what I mean and why I mention that. Would highly recommend this team to anyone!

I needed a small repair job, flashing on my chimney. I contacted several roofing who did not return my calls. I then went thru thumbtack.com who put me in touch with northeast constuction. A representative of the company, Shawn, came to my home within 48 hrs, evaluated the job and gave a fair price. The job is expected to done within a week. Jarret was great. Personable, showed up when he said he would, seemed quite knowledgeable, etc. Because my job involved an insurance claim he worked with us to get our quote to the insurance company quickly and was available to them to answer questions etc. resulting in us getting a significantly higher amount of money to help repair the roof than originally reported. I'd highly recommend him to anyone needing roof repair in the future.

We've used Budget Exteriors for several exterior projects-clapboard and trim out 5 roof dormers, replace exterior cedar shingles. The house is a very large, tall structure, slate roof with minimal access to upper floors. Very challenging to work on. On every job Lou was easy to work with, professional, and came prepared to show us options for materials as well as design considerations. Most recently we had all the wood porch railings replaced and presumed we'd use pressure treated or composite lumber. Again Lou showed us a PVC line that accents the decks very nicely, is stylish and had a variety of color choices. Once again, he came through with choices that made the job outstanding. Lastly, I want to credit the Budget Exterior work crews. Depending on the job, we've seen a mix of four different crews, each of which have been courteous, professional, diligent and considerate of the property. I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors for any roofing or exterior contract work.

We recently had our roof replaced by NH Grand Roofs. I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience. Chris was great from the initial visit to do the estimate, through the job completion and cleanup. He communicated well every step of the way so there was never a question as to the status or what was going on. He even called after the dumpster was hauled away to make sure I double checked for any nails that may have fallen out of the dumpster that they may have missed. The crew was polite and professional, providing quick and high quality work, finishing the job a day ahead of schedule. They also spent a lot of time cleaning up to ensure the littlest pieces of scrap made it into the dumpster. The roof has a lifetime warranty backing up the high quality material and installation. There were plenty of choices on roofing material and colors and we were walked through the advantages of each to help us make the right decision. I would highly recommend NH Grand Roofs if you are looking for a quality, long lasting roof installed with attention to detail and a positive experience from start to finish. I'm definitely a happy customer in Chester, NH.

My wood flooring needed to be ordered so I have not yet had the floor installed. I will follow up with a updated review and pictures one the floor is completed. Can't wait!!

Marco and his team helped us to finish our basement. Even though it took little longer than expected, at the end we are happy with their service. Marco was very helpful, flexible and clearly explains every step in the process. His team already helped us on two other projects afterwards. We strongly recommend Bilmar Construction for your project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
