Once every 10 or so rainstorms, water drips onto my dining room floor. Over 7-plus years, various contractors and handymen have tried to stop it, and failed. Wayne came by, made a nearly instant diagnosis, and promised he'd be back the next afternoon to repair it -- in less than an hour. He came back as promised, right on schedule, did his thing, and thoroughly tested it with my hose. Even cleaned out the gutters so the hose water wouldn't soak my deck. Now two rainstorms later, no leak. After 8 more storms with no leak, I'll come back to Thumbtack and give him FIVE stars!

Had a very rewarding and satisfying experience with Headspin events !!! Reached out to Lourdes to help us plan the decor for our daughters 2nd birthday and very glad we did that :) Right from coming up with ideas, meeting up, prompt reply to mails and calls... she was very committed and was v clear on what would translate on D Day ! She gave us various options based on the budget we had in mind and worked with us throughout and is very hard working and responsible ! Came up with last minute improvisations and was bang on in getting everything the way we had visualized :):):) It was a very stress free and hassle free experience unlike some we had seen previously! Everyone loved the decor and we got lots of compliments !!! Would definitely recommend Head spin events and will surely look forward to having Lourdes work with us for our future events !!! I hired Julie to plan, organize and execute a surprise, outdoor 51st birthday party for my wife Lori at our home. I wanted to go "all out" as I was not able to do a party for her 50th and I was making up for it. I gave Julie full responsibility with some basic guidance on a theme and a long list of names, emails and phone numbers of potential guests. Julie went right to work with a beautifully created electronic invitation sent to over 100 guests two months before the party. She continued to monitor and follow up on the RSVPs every week or so until the day of the party. She immediately arranged for and made reservations for large tents, a special caterer, theme items and all the little things that make a surprise birthday party special. Details matter to Julie and she payed attention to them, constantly monitoring the status of all the moving parts coming together. On the day of the party, Julie had quite the task. While I was able to get my wife out of the house and keep her away from it from 10 am until the party started at 6 pm, Julie arranged for everything to come together in our backyard in that short period of time. Large tents, tables, chairs, decorations, workers, food, birthday cake, themed items etc. all had to appear and be set up in our backyard during that time. No vendor could come earlier or the surprise would be blown and no one could be late as the party started at 6 pm. All the guests - approximately 100 of them - had to show up on time to sing happy birthday when we arrived. The logistics and timing had to be perfect with a lot of moving parts. Suffice it to say, when I brought my wife back to our house at 6 pm, all 100 or so guests were there under tents with a delicious buffet meal ready to be served. Everything was perfect. Nothing had been missed or was out of place. The timing of everything that day was impeccable. I owe it all to Julie and her amazing organizational skills and talent. This woman knows how to plan and throw a party! I have never seen anything like it. What a relief it was to me to be able to leave all of the responsibility for this in the hands of a true professional - Julie. I highly recommend Julie for all your event planning needs. My wife's surprise birthday party had a lot of moving parts. If any of those moving parts were not timed and executed properly, the party could have easily been a "nonsurprise" birthday party. I look forward to using Julie again when I need assistance planning another event. She is the best I have seen. Please call me at 603-438-6333 if you wish to ask any questions about Julie and her superior event planning skills. Gary

Everything was picture perfect for our baby shower on June 4, 2017! Valerie listened to what we wanted, she made suggestions, and she brought it to life 10 times over on the day of the baby shower. Everyone was blown away! The consensus was "that this is the prettiest baby shower that anyone had been to, as a matter of fact, it was the prettiest SHOWER that anyone had been to". Valerie was attentive, reliable, conscientious, timely and so professional. I can't say enough positive things about Valerie. It was well worth the money just to see and hear such wonderful feedback from the guests, and to know that I helped make my nieces first baby shower so special and memorable. Thank you Valerie for all you did, you are a wonderful decorator and designer, and a lovely person inside and out!

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

When we spoke to Nimra for the first time, we were unsure of who we wanted to use as our event decorator. Nimra gave us her quotes and details of what she is going to include. We had a clear idea of what we wanted. She allowed us to ask questions and discuss our ideas. Every time we asked her if something we wanted to do was possible, she found a way to make it work. She was really flexible to changes and also gave us her ideas for more options that would look better. She made the entire process very easy. She is quick to reply to all the questions through email and also through texting. She also made sure she answered every question we had. She is very punctual about timings and arrived well before the event for setup. Also would like to mention that she visited our event venue couple weeks before the event date so to plan the decoration setup early and not to keep any last minute surprises. She did a great job and the decoration setup was exactly how we wanted. Everyone liked the decoration. We are happy that we decided to go with Nimra for our event. Thank you Nimra!!

We decided to hire Beth for our wedding after a booking a venue in which we'd have to take care of everything from the catering to the decor. I knew I wouldn't be able to manage it all on my own, and I was so afraid that I'd overlook some crucial detail, so I really wanted to hire someone who would take care of it all, and boy did she exceed my expectations! She is incredibly responsive, full of great suggestions, and she was able to get us discounts on many of our vendors. She really helped me to streamline my thoughts and ideas so that we came up with a cohesive vision for the day. She is so positive and energetic, and anytime I was stressed, I'd give her a call, and she'd have me feeling better in no time. When I arrived at the ceremony and I saw her standing there with her clipboard, I almost cried with relief because I was so happy to see her, hahaha! I was really, really nervous about our venue - we brought in everything from the lighting to furniture, and there was a LOT of work to be done. I was so afraid that my ideas would turn out to be tacky or that the room wouldn't look good, and I had no chance to see it until I arrived at the reception, and I was BLOWN AWAY by what she did. She made it even more gorgeous than I could have ever imagined. We are still receiving compliments a month later. Not only did she do all of the decorating, but she also did all of the hard labor - the woman was on ladders hanging lights, moving tables and chairs, setting tables, etc. On top of all of that, she dealt with last minute fires that came up (like when the parking facility I had paid for mistakenly turned guests away - Beth was ON IT) and cranky relatives who didn't like their seating assignment. Hiring her was THE BEST decision we made in regard to the wedding and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I often joke that I wish I could hire Beth to run everything in my life now! If I ever plan another event, she will be the very first person I call!

After twenty-three years in my little house, I could not bear walking into my livingroom/diningroom any longer. Tess came over to do an evaluation for me and asked if she could please spend a half an hour alone in the space to get sense of me and the possibilities for my home. I have a lot of "chachkes" and antique-y furniture (which sometimes makes my husband crazy). After a while, Tess called me back in, and she held out two arts and crafts decorative tiles that I have of trees, mountains, and a river in gorgeous earth tones. She said "this is who you are, isn't it?" I burst into tears. She literally hit on the essence of who I am and in that moment defined an entire style and palette of colors that ultimately brought together our entire space. Tess was delightful to work with, creative and fun, and PATIENT. She worked very hard to ensure that both my husband and I were happy and comfortable with our choices. We had a blast shopping for furniture, choosing material for new curtains, and, most importantly, finding the right paint colors that would complement our pottery collection and furnishings. In addition, she completely reorganized and revitalized our space and created a wonderful, cozy sitting area that helped redefine our livingroom/diningroom. I am incredibly grateful to Tess for transforming our home. She took as much pleasure in the result as I did, and it was clear that she was highly invested in making our home look and feel fresh and wonderful for us. I highly recommend working with Tess! Not only will she change your home and your life, but you will gain a delightful, generous new friend.

After I moved into a new studio in Boston I had Maggie help me decorate. My main goal was for items to look high quality without spending a fortune! She made my Ikea furniture look like Mitchell Gold with just a coat of paint and some trim! This looks fab and I have already received so many compliments from friends. Best part is I didn’t even have to break the bank!

My experience with Jacqui was unbelievably awesome she was so understanding and patience of my situation. I had to downsize from a 1700 sq. ft. home to an 800 sq. ft. apartment, I was so overwhelmed with so many things that I couldn't stay focused or figure out what could stay, sell, or give away and it was taking weeks for me to try and figure out what could go where and get as organized as possible so I decided I needed help with this mess...Jacqui to my rescue, the first day she came to check out the work I was asking to be done she was so nice and after she looked at what I had brought into such a small space... even that didn't scare her away so after our conversation and Jacqui explaining what could be done to make me love my new home I knew she was just what I needed so I hired her right then and there, we made an appointment for the day and time that worked for both of us and she did leave me with things I needed to do to be ready for her on the day of our appointment. Because of the things I did in advance it was so much easier to figure things out and the very first day we worked so well together and got so much accomplished, Jacqui has a great sense of humor and she knew just when to use it when I really needed it especially when I still thought this job would never end but by the end of the first day I felt happier than I'd been in a very long time and seeing there really was a light to the end of tunnel for me and when she came back to finish up (which took only a couple of hours) and the job was complete we looked around to see if anything needed to be changed around...nothing had to be changed and I couldn't believe how organized everything was, at this point I gave her the biggest hug and told her she had just changed my life to the best it's been in a long time and I ABSOLUTLY LOVED MY NEW HOME!!!! Now I'm looking forward to having her come back and help me do some decorating :-) If you're looking for the "BEST" look for Jacqui, you won't be sorry :-)

Carla is a dream to work with! She decorated my entire wedding, from ceremony to reception. When I walked into the ballroom for our grand entrance, I was absolutely floored—each table had unique centerpieces, all lovingly arranged, in just the “classy” and “elegant” style I requested, and spiced up with little details from my and my husband’s childhood. Carla goes out of her way to create decorations that aren’t just beautiful, but also personally meaningful; she spent some time at the beginning getting to know us as a couple, and it really paid off. Carla is creative, incredibly responsive, super organized and timely. She knows it’s an important day, and respects it as such—she won’t drop the ball on you. But perhaps most importantly, she keeps it real throughout, offering tons of ideas for ways to decorate without breaking my budget or creating tons of waste. Highly, highly recommended!!

My husband and I had a great experience working with Hannah. We recently moved into our first home and were unsure of what we wanted to do with the space. As our house is much larger than our previous home (but not a forever home), we struggled with which areas to focus on improving and how to prioritize purchasing furniture. We weren't sure what our "vision" for the space was, and she started by helping us tease through that, offering options without overwhelming us. Hannah was able to help us make selected improvements that had a big impact, focusing on common spaces and "high traffic" areas, recommending decorations and furniture that were both within our budget constraints and timeless enough to stay with us for years to come. I loved her small style suggestions that quickly transformed a room - even just placement of furniture or artwork. Hannah explained what changes would help make our home feel more finished and quickly helped execute, based on our personal style. I would recommend Hannah over and over - if you are looking for a full interior makeover or just a small space, she's able to translate her skills to whatever the task.

I have used Gail Putnam and Balloon Creations to provide balloon decorations for three different events in the last six years. In each case Gail was easy to work with, ready to make suggestions about the decor we wanted, and completely responsive to any changes or modifications we requested. For two different graduation parties, she helped decorate our backyard tent with both centerpieces and balloon arches, along with balloons at the front of the house. In both cases, I gave her a color scheme, some basic ideas, and she created the perfect balloons. For my daughter's sweet sixteen party, we had a tropical beach theme and she made balloon clusters with tropical beach colors and palm tree weights to hold them down. She also created 8-foot palm trees made out of balloons to line the dance floor! It was spectacular! Gail Putnam and Balloon Creations has been consistently excellent, always reliable, and remarkably reasonable with pricing. I would not hesitate to recommend Balloon Creations to anyone and I will absolutely hire them in the future if I'm fortunate enough to have a special event to celebrate.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
