DeCarney roofing did an amazing job. After the crazy nor'easter laste weekend, I had some damaged shingles. They managed to squeeze me in after a previous client, and fixed my damaged roof right away for a very reasonable price. On top of that, Mario was very friendly and pointed out several things about roofing as he was making repairs. In hindsight, he probably should have charged me for the lesson as well as the roof repair. My roof is older, and when I replace it Decarney Roofing will be my first choice for the company to do the work.

We worked with Steve and Joe for an asphalt roof, soffit ventilation, and a roof repair on a sun room from a fallen tree. Steve was great to work with and he was the most communicative of the 10 or so roofing estimates we inquired about. I asked many technical questions as I am an engineer and very detail oriented by nature. They did everything they said they would do and did a quality job. Steve stuck out from the beginning as he called our town building department to find our local codes to find out what was legal as other conractrors were saying that you could put a metal roof over 2 layers of asphalt roof. The roof and sunroom repair was done over 2 days and they cleaned up the yard pretty well. Steve was always easy to get a hold of and really had awesome customer service. They are not the cheapest gig in town but you can trust them and they do quality work. I would hire again. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about my experience

John was a pleasure to work with. His master carpenter, Dave was easy to work with and helped to repair a badly rotted screen porch. I hope to hire them to repair my roof this summer.

Bruce Montville was great to work with! He was quick to respond to our inquiries about a roof and skylight job and he gave us several detailed estimates as the job description evolved. He was on time, communicated clearly through the course of the job and showed great attention to detail.

My initial contact with Northeast Construction was great, they sent a very professional response and sent out some one (Ian?) the next day to make the repairs to walls and touch it up. Brandon also came out to check on the job and also provided a estimate on some bathroom work we would like to do. After speaking with him we could tell he has extensive experience and knows what he is talking about. We had no idea we couldn't install Sheetrock of any type in a shower behind tile, we had numerous contractors say that was perfectly fine and the norm, after researching its is not the norm. We look forward to working with them on our bathroom job and future projects.

My wife and I spent over a year and a half having multiple contractors into our home to give quotes on removing our current roof deck in Dorchester to re-build and expand it using composite decking. The quotes we received were all over the place and nobody really gave us the warm fuzzy feeling that they knew what they were doing so we ended up postponing the project year after year Finally I happened to use Home Advisor and received a call from Eric at Stella. He had phoned me pretty quick after putting in the first request and he seemed friendly and knowledgeable. He visited our home and within a week we had a quote - it was the first one that seemed reasonable. Eric was also able to explain how the process would work, the timeframe, the materials, etc. He put my wife, myself, our dog and our 2 year old son very much at ease. We had the usual process take place with the city of Boston - zoning board meetings, abutter meetings - once that was done Eric and his team started their work - they ended up beginning around the beginning of December - they were on our roof during the coldest days (if you're reading this any time during me writing this, you'll remember when the temperate was close to zero in December of 2017) The crew was up there on our roof and everybody working was considerate, friendly, and adept at what they were doing. I think there was a crew of five in total and our 3.5 year old learned all their names. They were super friendly and extremely thorough with the project. The roof deck looks magnificent and we can't wait for spring to come to turn it into an urban forest and garden up there. During the process I also met the other two owners - Joe and Steve - along with Eric you find three young men who are adept at their craft and above all else, friendly, honest and seem to somehow encompass an integrity in their workmanship and business model that I fear is normally lacking in the trades these days We referred them to my brother and sister in law in Quincy and they've already done projects there inside - I believe they've also hired Stella to do a second story addition to their home. We will be hiring them to do some more projects in our condo as well come spring time In conclusion - it's rare to find a builder or contractor these days who puts the customer first, who does a great job, and who goes above and beyond what they say they are going to do and actually follow through with quality and competence - Stella somehow does it splendidly and I wouldn't hesitate to refer them to anybody out there who needs a project done

We had our roof done with them. The owner of this business is a wonderful man. They responded to my initial call immediately and got an appointment within a few days for a free estimate. They came on time and the estimate was emailed to me within a few days. We decided to go with Rainstone construction because of their responsiveness. On the day of work they showed up on time, worked quickly and cleaned up after finishing. We found them reliable, professional with reasonable pricing. We enjoyed working with them and will surely recommend Rainstone to our friends.

We've used Budget Exteriors for several exterior projects-clapboard and trim out 5 roof dormers, replace exterior cedar shingles. The house is a very large, tall structure, slate roof with minimal access to upper floors. Very challenging to work on. On every job Lou was easy to work with, professional, and came prepared to show us options for materials as well as design considerations. Most recently we had all the wood porch railings replaced and presumed we'd use pressure treated or composite lumber. Again Lou showed us a PVC line that accents the decks very nicely, is stylish and had a variety of color choices. Once again, he came through with choices that made the job outstanding. Lastly, I want to credit the Budget Exterior work crews. Depending on the job, we've seen a mix of four different crews, each of which have been courteous, professional, diligent and considerate of the property. I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors for any roofing or exterior contract work.

Patrick was great. I was expecting just a visit and estimate for gutter repair but he was able to do the job the same day at a competitive price. His company also does roof work, painting, etc so I will definitely be hiring him again.

I had a very good experience using Winter Hill GC. Claudio, the owner, came out to give the estimate right away, scheduling was good and customer service was wonderful. Everything went very smooth on our full kitchen remodeling. We will surely use this contractor again on September for roof replacement.

After interviewing and getting estimates from12 local contractors,I knew that Chris/ NH Grand was the contractor for me. Chris took the time to go into my 150 degree attic and make recommendations on some vents, stopped by unexpectedly on a Saturday afternoon to drop off some samples, and between him and his team of total professionals, did not take 1 day rushing to get the job done, but took 3 days making sure the job was done right, and also corrected any other problems they came across during installation. Just one outstanding and professional job. I Highly recommend NH Grand Roofs above any other local contractors. Did I mention also a very competitive price vs the other contractors (2nd lowest out of 12) Mike & Sheila C. Salem NH

Gerry recently did a roof job on my house and additional work on water damage to the ceiling in the bathroom. He had to work around another contractor doing a mold remediation job in my attic. He was extremely professional and has a work ethic that is of the elite standard. He had to work around issues with the mold and was accommodating with last minute schedule changes. I would recommend him in a heart beat.

Anthony installed a portion of my roof (as much as we could afford to have done!) and was very timely. He gave good advice on how to get the most for our small budget. He took care of all the details (dumpster, picking up nails, ordering supplies, etc.) and we will be hiring him again to finish the roof. I would definitely recommend him!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
