We hired Wayne Lupien (L&K Construction) to remove and replace the wooden clapboard siding on the front of our barn and attached shed with vinyl siding. The age and unique architectural features of our 120 year old house made this a challenging project. Wayne was a great communicator and kept us informed of his progress on a daily basis. The job was completed on time and the results were better than we had anticipated. I consider this the best experience I have ever had with any contractor and would not hesitate to hire Wayne again.

I have had the pleasure to hire Gilbert twice in the last 6-months. I was preparing my townhouse in the Fall of 2012. Gilbert came in with the same carpet samples as the other 2 individuals who bid out the job to re-carpet my town house and lay new vinyl flooring. He introduced me to s a new style kitchen floor (Tarkett Fiber Floor) that would wear well and save me money. Install went smoothly. He asked for a deposit in advance to secure the materials, and the difference of the money upon completion of the job (very professional). In addition his invoices spell out what he is doing clearly (unlike many other pros I've worked with). He saved me money and did a real quality installation! After installed the new flooring in Sept 2012, a pipe burst in my townhouse causing a flood 5 months later (the weekend before a tenant was going to sign a new lease). I quickly called Gilbert to help me in the process to get things back to where I needed them to make my place a rental unit again. He made himself readily available to also swing by when the insurance adjuster was there inspecting the water damage. Just being present he was able to easily explain to the insurance adjuster what was and what was not salvageable from the damage. Then the work began (again). His pricing (even 5-months later) was still fair and reasonable. In addition (and this was the biggie), he made himself readily available to work within the fast paced schedule which I had created to repair my place back to new for rental on time. I had everything repaired within 2.5 weeks and I couldn't have done it successfully without Gilbert. I highly recommend Gilbert for any and all of your flooring needs in your home or business.

Adam did a phenomenal job on my bathroom flooring. I had wood laminate from the previous owner (photo included as a before) and we installed a porcelain wood grain tile (photo included as an after). He worked with me graciously, as I wanted to purchase all of the material (had a gift card) and he wrote out exactly what I needed to get. The finished product is exactly what I wanted and the value of the work is superb. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for flooring jobs and if I have any more that come up in the future I will definitely be hiring him again.

I cannot say enough great things about Bill and his company. We were renovating our new home on a pretty tight timeline. When we first met with Bill we had several different flooring scenarios for each room in the house. He took the time to quote us on every possible option before we made our decision. We ended up having to add some additional work for Bill to complete and not only did we end up with beautiful floors but he also still got the job done in the amount of time we had hoped for. The vinyl plank and the carpets look even better than I had pictured. We will be recommending to everyone!

Joe installed our laminate wood flooring in our kitchen and bathroom. There was a lot of cutting in order to fit around small places including around the hole after he took off the toilet. He is very precise in his measurements and everything came out beautifully. There was a small jutting out on one of the boards that he had already put down, but he redid it without any problem or delay, and the floor looks absolutely flawless! He works like a machine and this job was complete in 2 days! Thanks again, Joe!

We wanted carpets replaced in two living rooms with laminate flooring. Nathaniel was prompt in visiting for an estimate, and gave us a fair and competitive price. We had two heavy items in the room that I could not move myself, but Nathaniel was gracious enough to offer to move them and actually had to move an item twice due to a last-minute change on our part. He had estimated about 2 days to complete the project, but wrapped up the work in about a day and a half. The job was excellent and to our satisfaction. They were very professional the entire time. I felt that they went above and beyond what we agreed upon when helped me with the disposal - they helped load my vehicle twice and helped me at the landfill. We are very happy with the quality of his work, and will gladly do business with him again. I highly recommend his services to others.

Mike and Jim did a great job! This job required an in person visit for quoting, they were very quick with the quote and scheduling the work. We had bathroom flooring (vinyl), toilet, and vanity replaced and glass tub doors installed. They completed the work in less than 2 days, cleaned up after themselves, and were very accommodating of my schedule and budget. During the quote visit, I shared that I would pick up the major materials to save on cost (by saving their time) and allowed me to pick out products that I wanted for the bathroom. Mike and Jim had no issues with that, and installed everything perfectly and without complaint (even after I had to return the vanity on Day 1 because Lowes had damaged it). I highly recommend them.

CLP flooring installed a laminate flooring product in our kitchen, dining room, living room, 1st floor bedroom and entrance way. A major part of the project was removing old ceramic tile in the entrance way that had been there for over 30 years. I never saw another person work as hard as this man did to get it perfectly clean! His work is truly exceptional. The new flooring is also perfect, he worked especially hard to have a solid flow as the rooms are open concept and around a fireplace hearth fitted trim boards. Also took care of floor squeaks as the house is over 30 years old and it was the original carpet in most of the areas. He did this work over a year ago so we have been through weather changes with not a problem. We had a previous property with laminate flooring that lifted when the humid weather of summer arrived! No problem at all with the flooring CLP installed!

Over the last couple of years, Darrin has done several remodeling jobs for us on our older home. He did a lot of structural work in the basement, rebuilt walls, and strengthened floors. He also put in new construction windows, rebuilt the mud room, and put on new vinyl siding. Darrin worked hard to keep costs within our budget, and it all turned out even better than I envisioned it. Looking forward to him coming back next year to redo our bathroom!

Awesome Experience : I had a very unique situation where we ripped out linoleum carpet and laminate in my 1st floor living area replaced it with porcelain tile through out. I thought it would be a challenge moving all the furniture and still continuing to use the area as it was the only access to my kitchen. Mesud assured me not to worry. His level of professionalism is a treat. Not only was he accommodating, he was done before I anticipated. What a dramatic change his work has made for me and my family. GREAT JOB !!!!!

I can say enough good things about this company. I researched a lot of companies in my area and Costa Leite sounded like the type of company I would like to do business with. Ivan is the owner and he is very polite and helpful in selecting the type of flooring we were looking for. We had both carpeting and laminate hard wood flooring installed. Ivan was very responsive in keeping in touch with us to let us know when the flooring material was available for installation. We had the carpets install in about two weeks and they did a great job on the install. We were finishing an addition to our house and I told Ivan that there was a little delay in construction and could he hold our hard wood flooring for about one month. He said no problem and just give him a 3 day advance notice when we were ready to install the floor. After construction, I called Ivan and made an appointment for the laminate flooring to be installed. The installer did a fantastic job on the floor, being very careful in cutting our door casings so that they meet the new floor perfect. All the hardwood floor transitions look great, you can tell the installer takes pride in his workmanship. The price of both floors is very reasonable, and Ivan uses quality materials. This is the type of business that you can refer friends to and feel good about it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
