Chris catered a dinner party at my apartment and everything was top notch. He arrived promptly, had enough time to get organized before the guests arrived, and looked very professional. The presentation of the food was as delicious as it tasted. My friend helped organize the menu and every course was more delicious than the next. I look forward to having him caterer more frequently, as well as teach cooking classes. Chris' professionalism and attentiveness was incredible. Thank you again for a wonderful evening!

My husband gave to me one 3-hours-class with Erika! More than a cooking class, I had the opportunity to talk and share ideas with someone that knows a lot about healthy food! That was great and exactly what I was looking for! During the class, I was able to raise all my doubts! Of course we prepared delicious recipes, but more important than this Erika shared all her knowledge! She gave me new ideas to improve my cooking and to prepare better (and delicious) food! Thank you, Erika! It was an amazing experience!

via Melissa, or "Chef Melissa" as we call her, exceeded our expectations! We took her from her usual route of healthy food and asked her to run a cooking class so that children with Celiac Disease could make and enjoy cupcakes on the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. She was really flexible and provided what felt and looked like "regular" cupcakes but modified for strict gluten-free compliance and somehow they were a little healthy too! All natural. even organic and dairy-free where possible. The ages of children who attended ranged from 4-12 and she worked really well with everyone! She set up before we (event organizers) arrived and had a friendly helper with her. They were professional but the kids related to them very well. The parents were all pleased and her rate was really reasonable! Our support group doesn't make any money from events like this, parents paid her directly and she was accepting last-minute additions without any worries. I can't think of a single negative - in fact we'd like to work with her again this year! Oh, and she even took the work of finding a location away from us (we're 2 volunteers who run this group for our children and others). Next class, we'll go a little healthier and really take advantage of ALL that via Melissa has to offer our kids! :) Oh, and she's even sending us kid-friendly, healthy and gluten-free recipes for us to share with the families in our group! She really goes above and beyond!

Chef Flo was invited to my apartment for a surprise birthday dinner. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much - but boy, oh boy, were we in for a treat!! Florvil Chef Flo Valdez fed us the best poached shrimp salad (I've ever had), the best chicken florentine (I've ever had) and a chocolate mousse creme brulee (I've ever had)!!! From the crushing of the pistachios to the torching of the mousse, you can see first hand that Chef Flo pours his love into his cooking. It's an awesome experience all around - to witness the magic happen, to be served by him and to experience it first hand! It was truly an once in a lifetime opportunity. I would LOVE to host dinner parties, maybe even cooking classes with Chef Flo in the future. He left a lasting impression and even inspired us to become chefs ourselves. In fact, I tried replicating his chicken florentine the following day but I'll save that story for another time. If you are thinking about booking Chef Flo, there's nothing to think about, just do it. Not for a second will you regret it! Thank you Chef Flo for such an amazing experience. BON APPETITE!

Jennifer was prompt in her response to my inquiry about a holiday meal/cooking class, creative in coming up with solutions to meet our family member's dietary constraints, and very easy to work with in planning the menu. Her prices are very reasonable! The food was very good and we had fun watching and helping a bit with the preparation. We would recommend her.

Private Cooking class. Lauren was unbelievable re response time, energy and professionalism. We've yet to take the class but know if it's half the initial experience it will be well worth the money.

It's rare I get to take cooking lessons from someone that's both a chef and a nutritionist. Not only can I now use a chef's knife properly and do wonderful things with avocado and mango (including making tropical mango-avocado guacamole!), I know some tricks to make healthy foods more flavorful. Jackie provides a great experience all around!

Megan is a remarkable chef and exceptional teacher. We hired her for a private cooking class and she went above and beyond to plan - and instruct - a lesson that far exceeded our expectations. We learned a ton and had so much fun in the process!

My husband hired Gustavo to come and cook for us and another couple coming in from far away we haven't seen in many years. We didn't want to worry about cooking and really wanted to catch up with our friends. Gus had great communication with us before the event ensuring we would be getting everything we wanted. Even though we wanted a very simple meal, Gus made sure to make it extra special for us. It even turned into an impromptu mini cooking class as we all crowded around him asking questions about the food. It was a great experience and will definitely keep him in mind for future events.

I took Dorina’s Functional Home Cooking Course through the local adult school last fall. I have continued to take weekly classes since then. Dorina’s emphasis is on cooking quick, nutritious meals using wholesome ingredients. Her forte is Italian cooking but she has a broad knowledge of foods and other styles of cooking. Her classes are well organized. Topics touched on during class include the choice of ingredients, possible variations and substitutions, nutrition, tricks of the trade, and tips on where to shop. Dorina is friendly and engaging and her classes are informative and enjoyable. Her class is the perfect starting point for someone with little experience in cooking who wants to learn the basics. Her class would also be valuable for a person with some experience in the kitchen who wants to broaden their perspective.

I hired chef Hellard to accommodate my business schedule and help me eat healthier. As someone who works a lot of hours I could not get out of the rut of ordering in for Lunch and Dinner and decided to try something different. A friend recommended Rae and I hired her a few days a week to cook dinner for my family and prepare a few meals I could take to work and eat at home on nights where I was working late. Rae is very accommodating and did an excellent job finding extremely healthy and delightful meals that refrigerated well and were just as fresh a few days after preparation. She has helped me transform my eating habits and I find I have a lot more energy and time to do what needs to get done every day. That being said, with a little more flexibility for family dinners Rae has come up with some extremely unique and delicious meals that my whole family enjoys. We used to go out to eat twice a week but since we hired Rae we enjoy 5 star meals from the comfort of our home. After a long day at work there is nothing I look forward to more than coming home, relaxing, and having a professionally cooked meal in which I don't have to lift a finger. I highly recommend Rae to anyone that wants to be pampered and enjoy a first class chef in the comfort of their home. On a personal level level Rae is very friendly, outgoing, and courteous. She is someone that clearly takes pride in her work and is passionate about food and experimenting with new dishes. I have always found in house help to be a bit distracting and awkward but Rae is very unobtrusive, professional, and a delight to have around the house. Oh yeah, she is also great at custom cakes, cookies, and other treats which make a great gifts come time for birthdays or other events. Just one more added level of convenience.

I took a cooking class with James which was wonderful. He planned a terrific menu, at Sur La Table. We learned knife skills and some great new recipes. After this class, my cooking club hired James to do a class at someone's home. We planned the menu , together, and all 6 of us took part in this great evening of slicing, dicing and baking.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
