David built the home I currently live in 14 years ago. Actually it was a total remodel of a house built in 1935, certainly more difficult than building new. It was reconstructed with the personal pride of Dave and his crew who were on site everyday. There was constant communication toward the materials and methods selected that affected the esthetics and livability and yes the cost of building my home. Dave and his crew were diligent during their time on site offering suggestions that made the build more enjoyable toward the future. Frequently family, friends and visitors comment on the design and individual touches that make this home. To this day Dave will call just to make sure all is well. What more could you want from a builder?

Being a first time homeowner I feel pretty clueless about most maintenance problems that may arise. I was inquiring on thumbtack for someone who could help me with problems I continued to have with a tankless water heater Pete reached out to me and not only was he kind on the phone but he also made time for me to go to my home that day and call me with his recommendations. This was on a Monday and by that Wednesday he installed a new water heater which unfortunately took him extra time into the evening. He wanted to make sure the job was completed for me. I would highly recommend Pete and Doyle's home improvement for all of your needs (yes he does more than plumbing) I know for myself I will contact him again and also let others know who live in wildwood that this is a company who was trustworthy, fair and punctual Thank you Pete

I recently moved into a new home and my guest bathroom was pouring out nothing but ice cold water. Which was disappointing, what's the point of having an extra bathroom you can't use? Well luckily I found Robert. He really went out of his way to help me by providing me tips and advice about what I could do to solve the problem on my own. It turned out I needed a professional to step in and he did an amazing job! Definitely recommend : )

I'm so immensely happy with the remodel of my home. A & T was able to transform my grandmother's 1920's kitchen, dining room, bathroom and living room into something I'm proud of. The kitchen was so small that I couldn't open the refrigerator without hitting the kitchen counter! From orange & brown tiles and wood paneling, to now having a beautiful functioning kitchen with oak cabinets, tile floors and a cooking area I can move around in! They were able to knock down a wall and make my kitchen bigger without losing the integrity of the older home. Tim isn't some fly by night company. He does things the right way, as if he was remodeling his own home. I would definitely recommend Tim and his crew to anyone!

Mr.Mechanical has performed many jobs for me at my commercial building and my home. He has installed new AC equipment and relocated it to a better location. His work is outstanding, reasonable and he performs in a timely manner. He has also performed precision work in my building: Jacked up a ceiling, repaired a roof leak that I had for over 4 years (which no other roofer could fix), sheet rocked, spackled and encased the steel beams with wood facing. At my personal residence he has fixed a well pump, did a tile backsplash in my kitchen and tiled one of my bathrooms. He has installed laminate flooring, installed a wall and door, spackled, painted and added finished molding where needed to perfection. And I am a perfectionist. This contractor goes beyond just HVAC systems. He really knows his stuff! And will never over charge. I will recommend and use Mr. Mechanical from now on for any and all of my contractor needs. After being ripped off by other contractors I don't trust anyone but him to get the job done and get it done correctly at a great price!

Angelo is a perfectionist who paid attention to even the smallest of details while performing work on my home. He is most knowledgeable of all facets of building, repairing, maintaining in addition to having the vision for designing. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
