"Steve is an excellent personal trainer and massage therapist. Anytime he comes for a session, we get to decide if we would like a massage, Qui Gong session, Thai massage, or Yoga stretches. He seems to find every knot that needs work on my body. He has coached me to increase my cardio and eventually achieve my weight loss goal. He knows his stuff! I'd recommend him highly!"

"I used to exercise regularly but lost touch over the past year. Mike was very helpful in understanding my requirement and pushed me just right to get the best out of me. We did some really good full body exercises and weights. Followed it up with some kickboxing cardio. Left me feeling really good after so many months. What I also liked was that he taught stretching exercises after each set. That really helped. I am going to work with Mike for a few months to get back in shape. Mike also explained why we were doing what we were doing. Thanks Mike for being a great teacher. "

"Danielle is extremely knowledgeable and affordable. Unlike most hair stylists, she suggests only what she thinks is best for the client's hair health, not what will make her the most money. I felt at home while she was doing my hair. The way she washes hair is so relaxing. She constantly asks if what she is doing is comfortable, or if the braiding is too tight (which it rarely was). She listened to what I wanted and actually did it. I would 200% recommend her, especially to women who care about the health of their hair. Even more importantly, her and her family care about my safety. After she finished with my hair, her fiance gave me a ride to the train station, even waiting with me until we realized I had missed the train, and then took me to another train station. I can't express how happy I am with what they have done for my confidence! And they fed me, so you can't beat that!"

"Naceel gave us the best price! We couldn't believe it!! You have to contact him and request him to see for yourself! Naceel gave us the best massage. I always get massages but I have to say this was the best massage! Today was my first time having the massage done at the comfort of my home. I wasn't sure how it would be. But the experience was great and privacy of my home. I was so relaxed and even took a nap after. It felt great that I didn't have to travel home. I was already home. Me and my mom got the massage. I am going to refer him to everyone. Again, no one can beat his price! He care about the clients and not the money. I wanted the massage very often and he told me based on my weight that I didn't need as much as I wanted the massage. Naceel will work with you individually and let you know how many sessions you would need for optimal health. He cares about his clients. He is fantastic!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
