Charles repaired the gate to my backyard which was dragging on the cement with rusted fixtures. He bought the needed part to raise gate and a new metal fixture. He had it repaired quickly. Excellent work!

Danny was excellent! He was a few minutes early and he came right in and got to work. He replaced my sink for me and made sure it was perfect. He then installed a gate lock and another door lock for me, all in under 3 hours. I would definitely recommend him, as I will likely be calling him again.

Needed a basement finished that was started by another contractor. Work included drywall, taping, etc., some framing, floor repair, door and trim installation. Sam got it all done in less than a week at a fair price. He recommended a painter and a flooring man and they should be done in another week. Sam is a good guy and the quality of his work is fantastic! Would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.

The pulley system on my garage door snapped one day, and Bill was able to come out and fix it the same day I put in my request on Thumbtack. He was professional and personable, did a great job, clearly knows what he's doing, and I will absolutely hire him to help around here again. His hourly rate is the same as another handyman we've used, which leads me to believe it's pretty standard around here.

They installed a fence and gate. Matthew came out measured and gave a quote. He was able to do the work the very next week. I have no complaints. His communication was excellent. He completed the work in the time he quoted at the price he quoted.

I had a fence placed by Vince. He was great about getting the job completed quickly and at a great price! He even made sure to clean up my driveway when he had finished the job! I had a special request in placing chicken wire at the bottom of the fence so my dogs couldn't dig out and Vince didn't have an issue with this request, unlike some fencing companies I had talked to. I was very impressed with the work completed, the whole fence was done in 3 days. I would definitely recommend Vince to others.

We requested Think Outside of the Toolbox to complete a few tasks around the house that we've been meaning to do for quite some time. This included installation of a baby gate at the top of the stairs, hanging of some frames, removal of sliding door blinds, install one floating shelf, and one whiteboard. Since a lot of items needed to be hung and placed properly, I wanted to hire a team that would be as detail oriented as possible. The first handy lady that came out to our place was very, very sweet and pleasant to talk to during her work. Her work looked like it was done very well, and for the most part, we had no issues. We ended up encountering a few challenges with the installation of two items, but as soon as I notified Cindy, she ensured that the projects were carried through and that we got what we paid for. Cindy sent out another handy lady who had to come on two occasions to work on the job (we ended up having to purchase another gate and be creative as to where we would put it), but I found her to be VERY impressive. The installation of the baby gate did not end up being as easy as it may have seemed - it required a lot of creativity and appropriately enough, thinking outside of the toolbox. Though I didn't imagine that our tasks would have taken this long, I am pleased with the work that this team pulled together. Despite the challenges, our very handy lady figured it all out and did a wonderful job. She ensured that the gate was SAFE (#1 priority) and practical. Cindy's management and communication was also VERY impressive. I was so appreciative of the great customer service she carried through. I would definitely hire Think Outside of the Toolbox again - their willingness to work through difficult tasks was so evident in the quality of their final product - we are really so thankful!

I've used J.S. CARPENTER twice in the last month (leaky skylight and broken gate/fence). We already had two companies out in the last few weeks for the leaky skylight to no avail. However, John came out within hours (for both fixes, by the way) and problem was immediately fixed. Both times John showed me the broken/faulty piece and what he was doing about it. Plus, you can't beat his prices.

I hired Tony to repair a gate door that was completely detached from the frame.Tony was very professional when coming to my home. He came for one project but ending up doing two. Very clean and neat with his work. He made sure to get back to me if he couldn't make it on a particular day. His prices are very reasonable and I will definitely hire him for future projects in my home and I will recommend him to friends and family.

Mark and his team installed an additional fence for us in a very difficult landscape and it is beautiful. He even took the time to stain the fence to match the existing fence and replace some broken boards on the exisiting fence. I would highly recommend Mark for any job; he is professional, courteous and actually does the work in a reasonable amount of time. He is diligent in his follow up and will even be putting an additional coat of stain as he thought the other coat dried unevenly. Great work!!

Had the paint on my driveway removed. Rafi called when he said he would, showed up when he said he would. Spent the entire day which was longer than he estimated. They stayed until the job was finished without raising the price. Did a nice job and cleaned up afterwards. A pleasure to work with. Would definitely recommend them.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
