We are a married couple and both wanted a massage, however it was quite late in the evening. We weren't sure if we would be able to hire a quality massage therapisist, if any. It was already 9PM when we contacted Yury on Thumbtack. We set up an appointment for 10:30 for back-to-back massages. My husband and I both practiced massage therapy many years ago, so we know when a practitioner is well trained. Believe me when I tell you my husband and I, hands down, can honestly say Yury gave us the best massages ever. What a treat. Thank you so much Yury. We will be calling for another session very soon.

I came in for a routine massage with my husband and to celebrate our anniversary. After telling Jose about my shoulders and upper back tension, he spent extra time on those areas also explaining how to take care of them @ work and home. He has physical therapy experience also. So I got so much more than the massage I paid for.

I first met Ian going on 13 years when I was much younger, overweight, and out of shape. We discussed what course of action I needed to take to get myself back on track. Ian set my goals, my diet and my workout routine, I was only 66 and eager to get back in shape. I put my body in Ian's hand and slowly he transformed me into a much better person both physically and mentally. Just as I thought I was in the best of shape, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Now it became a brand new ball game. Depression set in and for a short time lost my desire to continue at the gym. Again he came to the rescue and convinced me that I needed the gym now more than ever and pushed me harder. Similarly, his massage therapy helped ease the discomforts from Parkinson's tremendously! Excellent treatments with varying techniques. He was right - my Parkinson's tremors are not increasing and my Neurologist says to continue doing exactly what I'm doing. Thank you Ian, for giving me a quality of life I can enjoy and my goal is to have a body like yours (LOL). One can dream. Like I said, I would follow Ian to the moon if necessary. You are truly a remarkable and caring person and I love you. Richard Swetz

Kevin arrived at the designated time on the nose. He was courteous yet unobtrusive. He asked for my preferences in terms of pressure, music, oil vs cream, scented or non-scented. I need massage for therapeutic purposes. I am prone to tight shoulders plus I have been playing a lot of tennis and my body was radiating pain. I was also fighting a stress headache. By the time he finished, I was literally in a different body. I had a deep tissue treatment and when it was too deep, he backed off, just enough. When I needed more pressure, he adjusted as well. I get massages regularly. This one competed with the best of them.

Jacquie has helped me make breakthroughs and release some issues that have lingered for years despite various modalities of therapy. It's also empowering work as she teaches me tools along the way. You'll need to be clear about what you want to heal though in order to experience the power of the work.

I have known and worked with David for over 10 years now. I cannot express in words the gratitude I feel for haveing David in my life. I have emotionally grown leaps and bounds because of the work I have done with him both through massage and therapy. The difference between working with David and so many others is how present and loving and non-judgemental he is. I highly recomend you treat yourself to a session. You will be so so glad you did!! I have had a few energy healing sessions with Kristen and she is very good at what she does. I could feel the shift when she was working on me as negative energies left my body and I was filled with healing light. she also was able to get some answers to some questions for me using her pendulum. It's oftne hard to know what path to take but going to Kristen for guidance can really shed some light....

You know that feeling you get when you meet someone that instantaneously just gets you and you want to talk with them for hours? That's what it was like to have an intuitive reading with Christine and Brendon. Spending time with them was genuinely more therapeutic and empowering than a year of talk therapy. It was a super emotional experience, but I left feeling a sense of freedom and lightness that I didn't realize I'd lost. When I found Spirit Radical, I reached out right away because they seemed so genuine, compassionate, and full of love. I'm so grateful I did, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again!

Carla provided massage therapy services to my mom, sister in law and me at my place. She brought her equipment with her and took no time to set-up. She customized the massage by asking us target areas and gave tips at the end to improve posture. Very polite. Overall, we all liked the massage she gave. I'll definitely recommend her to others.

Steve was my trainer for a few years and excellent at it. He helped me lose weight, tone up and build my stamina. I never had a professional massage before, until Steve talked me into it. I never felt better after those massage therapy sessions. We still meet for my weekly massage therapy sessions and Steve also does energy work on me combining Reike and Therapeutic Touch. This work is very gentle and helps to relax.

Great FUN Teacher and SOOO knowledgeable!! Tendinitis of the hamstring is not fun at all. Especially when it lasts 2 years. It limits your activities and weighs on you mentally like all physical ailments. After trying many rehabilitation therapies and exercises, I still had a lot of pain and limited range of motion in my leg. There are many great yoga teachers and trainers but some stand out above the rest. Alison is so knowledgeable in the world of yoga, but equally in rehabilitation and physical therapy. Her ability to diagnose, treat , and create specific exercises for an individuals case is top notch. Alison incorporates other exercises in addition to the practice of yoga as well as creating and teaching people to have a peaceful nurturing approach to exercise and fitness. Whatever you physical goals are, I highly recommend incorporating yoga and seeing Alison. For someone like myself who was badly injured and never did yoga before and doing it consistently within very little time I saw quick results and complete healing of injuries. Alison is the real deal, in addition to you other activities give Alison and yoga a try!!

I had such a good massage here today. I tried the Thai combination massage and it was amazing- deep and firm but not painful. Kate has a unique talent in Thai therapy, trained in many authentic Thai massage styles, plenty of knowledge on anatomy and a sixth sense in finding the right touch. The place is nice very clean and good music. It really good price for the quality offered. I can't wait to come back to try the traditional Thai massage and foot massage. Highly recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
