We hired Simply Moving on very short notice to move our gym equipment and some furniture to our other house 95 miles away. It was a job that involved some "heavy lifting." Walter, Washington, Salvador, Norberto and Frank were all great. They were very careful and very pleasant to work with. We have nothing but good things to say.

Very friendly movers, couldn't get our couch out but not for lack of trying! Professional and efficient, they carried a lot of heavy stuff up 4 flights of stairs late into the night. In an industry where mover nightmares are common, these guys stand apart.

I made an excellent move from Bronx to Staten Island a month ago. We were schedule for 8 am for minimum 3 hours. They arrived with a truck on time and they were ready to roll. I already packed my stuff into boxes they just needed to wrap the furniture items. They loaded up the truck and we were off to our new building. Our new apartment is on 3rd floor with no lift or elevator. Each time movers had to take stairs, lifting some heavy items too but they never complained and didn't take a single break until we were all done. They are efficient and hardworking i couldn't ask for more.

They're the only moving company I've worked with so I have no frame of reference for work quality, but nothing was dinged or broken so that was good. I'm really glad that I hired them and it was worth it not to be the one doing the heavy lifting.

I had two pieces of furniture assembled yesterday and they showed up on time, did an awesome job and went over and above to assist me with moving my things, as at 8 and a half months pregnant I can't do any heavy lifting. Amazing! And I probably will use them again.

Kadeem is very professional and considerate of the client. They protect your furniture and ask for your preference consistently. However, I did not expect the move to take as long as it did. The movers took a lengthy break after working 2 1/2 hours. Granted it was a hot day and there was a lot of heavy lifting involved, and I wasn't charged the time of their break, I was surprised the break lasted as long as it did. Also, I was told the time started when they arrived on the block looking for parking. I believe the time should have started when they entered my apartment. Parking time should not have been factored into the time I pay for the actual moving of my possessions. Also, being charged a 2-5% (can't remember the exact percentage) for using a credit/debit card should not be included in the cost. Supposedly, I was told over the phone, but I didn't recall and ended up paying an additional $200. Most people will not carry $1K in cash so they are more likely to use a card. Just doesn't seem fair. Even though the cost was much higher in the end, Asap Movers are hard workers. In the future I would ask for an agreement in writing just so I have a better idea of the est. time frame and final cost.

Booked Bertie and 1 other guy on short notice to help move a heavy sleeper sofa from 2 miles away. He was very accommodating to my time frame. Unfortunately, once we got the couch to my apartment, Bertie's employee just flat out said "I can't do it" and quit. Having no choice, I had to step in and take over. Paid for 2 guys and got 1. The other guy still helped a bit guiding around corners, but Bertie and I did the heavy lifting. Pretty disappointing, but not totally Berties fault (although I did provide him with the weight of the couch before he accepted the job). But for what it's worth, Bertie himself did a fantastic job. He worked really hard, especially after his guy quit. I'd recommend him and hire him again but insist he choose his partner carefully.

Jeff and his partner did a great job moving my storage unit to my new home. The were both pleasant to deal with, stayed in touch before the move and arrived on-time. They got started on the work right away and we got it loaded in short order. Everything was put in his truck which has a lift-gate for the heavy stuff. After we got to my house they were very careful to ensure they did not damage the furniture or my walls going up the stair well - good job guys! Thanks, Eric

He moved a box spring and few other furnitures from my 3rd floor walkup unit to the street for removal. It was done quick despite our very narrow and rather inconvenient stairway. I would definitely use his service again if I have any other heavy lifting work!

I highly recommend 1st Moving. Not only were their prices competitive, but the service was outstanding. Vlad was always accessible by email/text, they were spot on with their timing estimates PLUS the only mover who gave reasonable time frames. They would pick my furniture up in 2-3 days and deliver it next day. Used many shipping contractors in past, this was my best experience. DO NOT HESITATE TO USE 1st Moving !!! Nata

Moving is a stressful business, but Mars Transportation took the stress part out of it. What a great company! They came on time and did everything very professionally. My couch is pretty big and it was difficult to take it down from the second floor, but the guys found a solution and everything was alright. On the way to my new apartment we hit heavy traffic, so it took us a long time to get to my place, but nobody complained. They are polite, nice and they understand your needs. The price was great also and overall the service was excellent. I am going to recommend Mr. Mars Transportation company to any of my friends who is about to move.

Mack was so helpful in what was a somewhat unconventional moving project. I purchased a table on ebay but was going to be unable to go pick it up myself. Mack showed up to the sellers house on time, treated them with respect and professionalism, and was back on the road to my home quickly. Once at my apartment, the team made moving the heavy table and benches upstairs look easy! Throughout the whole planning process, Mack was easy to talk to, easy to reach, and rolled with the punches while I tried to figure out all of the logistics. I wish I had used his team to move us to our new apartment last month! Thanks Mack!

Highly recommend working with Heavy Lifting Movers & Joe. They were able to book me within a week's notice for moving some furniture pieces coming out of a larger home into an apartment, with a lot of stairs in-between. All pieces were carefully wrapped and arrived at the destination in better condition than they left- even a vanity table that was a bit wobbly pre-move got tightened up as a part of the process. Joe was easy to get a hold of, more than reasonable with the quoting proces and is clearly very experienced with all types of moves. Definitely made the moving process as stress-free as possible and couldn't be happier with the service!

Darrio called me as soon as I posted an ad indicating I needed help with heavy lifting and assembling of a furniture piece and moving some heavy furniture in my apartment. He asked when I needed the job done and arranged to come at the time I requested. He and a coworker arrived on time and did the work perfectly. They actually noticed a chair needed repair and repaired it. He and his coworker were very nice and polite and the price was quite reasonable. I would definitely use his services again to help with repairs, heavy lifting or moving of objects again.

I hired Andre to provide heavy lifting for me during a move, moving my belongings out of my apartment and into a trailer. He was very easy to communicate with, super friendly, showed up on time and took care of the job very quickly. I highly recommend Andre for your moving needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
