David is a very honest and kind teacher. He understands my vocal needs completely. He is very knowledgeable and super encouraging. I was looking for someone who would help me have a better understanding of my voice and who would teach me how to use my instrument properly, I can honestly say I found that with David. I truly enjoyed myself and left feeling excited to come back for my next lessons! I look forward to working with David in the future!

Serge is an extremely skilled top notch coach and amazing instructor that genuinely cares about his students. His training sessions are very challenging and rewarding. My strength and endurance levels have greatly improved in such a short time since training with Serge. He has patience and will take the time to go over moves as many times as you need, in a supportive and encouraging way. You will sweat, train hard and learn a lot from each lesson. My training sessions were by far the BEST that I've ever experienced. What marks a phenomenal instructor is his ability to teach in a particular way that impacts every aspect of a students life, and that is what Serge has done for me and I'm truly thankful. Overall, I would highly recommend Serge to all without any hesitation. Josette-

I have never taken singing lessons before. With just a couple of lessons with Mara I have noticed a tremendous change in my vocals. I am able to reach notes that I did not know existed for me, I am in better control of my breathing, my phrasing is better and overall became more confident in my singing ability. Thanks Mara!

Pamela is amazing. She has been my voice teacher for while now, and I always look forward to our lessons. She is kind, honest, and truly sees the talent in potential in all who come to her. I'm a actress by training and new to the singing world, and she has opened my eyes to how fun voice training is and how everyone can sing if they have the will and passion (and the right teacher, which she certainly is).

I have been taking guitar lessons with Christopher for over two years and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. Christopher is not only extremely knowledgeable, he is an experienced teacher and knows how to effectively work with students to tailor lessons to their individual learning style. He is a pro at being able to explain musical concepts to beginners, and at breaking down learning into a manageable process that makes progress easier and keeps you motivated. Secondly, and probably more importantly, Christopher is really committed to his clients. He really goes the extra mile to insure clients are getting what they need out of their lessons. That extra level of attentiveness ultimately makes all the difference in keeping you motivated and focused on improving. Highly recommend!

Jimi not only helped me learn my way around the guitar, but more importantly was a key factor in helping me find my voice in music. Even to this day without taking lessons I find him still teaching me in bringing my music to the real world and supporting what I do. I could not recommend a better teacher!

Guitar lessons can be boring, but not with Steve. Steve's guitar playing its Eddie Van Halen's level and best of all is that he is very humble and a funny teacher. He will take his time to explain you note by note on the entire fretboard. I always have fun learning new scales, arpeggios, triads etc. with Steve. You will actually get exited every time a guitar lesson with him is coming up. A guitar instructor that actually knows how to play pretty much anything on guitar, but if you are into Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Jazz and Jazz Fusion, you should definitely take guitar lessons with Steve. - Winston Beast Master (Khiazma band)

Myla is an outstanding piano teacher to my 7 year old daughter who is just starting out. Myla has a very structured approach to the lessons and my daughter has been progressing rapidly. She is always upbeat and my daughter absolutely adores her and loves playing the piano! I heard of Myla through a friend who also highly recommended her.

My daughter was taking voice and piano lessons for 2 yrs. We were very unhappy with her progress and looked for different instructors. I came across Marty's bio and he appeared to be exactly what I was looking for. We started voice with him in February of this year and I can't believe the difference not only in my daughter's voice but also in the confidence he has helped her gain. Her vocal strength and range has broaden in such a short amount of time it's unbelievable. Prior to Marty, she refused to sing for anyone and everyone and now in just 5 short months she has decided to sing in a talent competition where there will be hundreds of people. We now have both our kids working with Marty for voice and piano and we couldn't be more thrilled!!! When it's time for lessons my kids practically run out the door because they can't wait to work with Marty. He IS THE music instructor you're looking for!!!! My only regret is that I didn't find him sooner!

Dave has been a wonderful teacher! I am a novice pianist and the lessons and homework assignments are tailored for my ability and progression. I never feel like I am being expected to do more than I am capable of. Dave is also a pleasant person to speak with, which is an added bonus, and extremely knowledgeable! I would recommend people of all ages and skill levels take lessons from him. Thank you Dave!

Simply put, Jonathan is the best. I decided to start taking piano lessons for the first time at age 40 (!), and couldn't be happier to have Jonathan as my teacher. He has a mastery of the piano so that he can teach all different types of music - whatever you are looking to learn. He is patient and explains things clearly. I have learned so much already! Most importantly, Jonathan has a great personality and the lessons are FUN. I look forward to going every week. Jonathan is worth every penny. My only regret is that I didn't find him sooner!

Amazing vocal teacher! Nicky is a great vocal teacher who is kind and patient. She has been working with my 11 year daughter for about 3 years. Nicky makes the extra effort to use age appropriate songs and part of the lesson includes music theory. Win win! My daughter can’t commit to the practice time necessary with an instrument, so we went with vocal lessons with Nicky. With singing she can practice any time and anywhere. Nicky has been able to bring out some beautiful notes, making this mom very proud. Can’t beat the price - she comes to our home and is a very accommodating with our crazy schedule. Again she is an AMAZING vocal teacher!!

I started lessons with David Chang a month and a half ago and everything has been going great ever since. Initially, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to play any instruments in my life, since my hands sweet excessively at random times mostly all of the time. David did a great job showing me over the past few weeks through his teachings that the problem with my hands isn’t a problem at all when it comes to playing the piano. He also spent a lot of time outside of our lessons assisting me with purchasing the right piano so that I could practice his techniques on my own time. He has a ton of patience and actually seems genuinely interested in the success of his students.

Corinn has taught my two daughters (13 & 15) piano and voice for the past 3 years. She is the best teacher we have had and we are thrilled that she has moved with us, by sheer luck, from London to NJ! She is extremely reliable and conscientious and is a talented and patient teacher who challenges my girls as individuals and has helped improve their skills tremendously. They look forward to their lessons with Corinn and feel as very comfortable with her. She is a very talented singer and pianist and is passing on her love of music to our daughters. We feel very lucky to have her influence in their lives.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
