Matthew was very responsive and took care of a long overdue repair in my apartment. Finally I don’t have to look at an eyesore around my a/c or smell the neighbors smoke.

Suzanne took care of our home and 75 gallon fish tank and fish beautifully! We wanted to have someone in our home during our trip to see family, and felt so comfortable knowing that she was taking care of things. During our time away, a neighborhood crisis occurred with gas leaks coming through the sewer system and she was there for us and our home. We would definitely hire her again in the future! She also gave us advice on our dog’s fears about going down our stairs - he now goes up and down without issue!! She is friendly and warm - we are glad to have found her!

I found Suki through Thumbtack and couldn't be happier. I live in lower Manhattan and was struggling to find a reliable, qualified and reasonably priced dog walking service after my current walker for ~2 years moved to California. Suki is great to work with. She is flexible and conscious of both mine and Oakley's needs. She updates me on Oakley's walks and is very polite and caring. I couldn't have asked for a better person to take care of my pup when I can't be there. I highly recommend entrusting Suki with your pet care needs.

I had Jenn's pet care watch my bunny for around 2.5 weeks while I was on vacation. I could not have been happier! They came every day to give her food/water, clean up her cage, and let her run around to have some fun. I was sent pics and updates daily, and could see that they were taking very good care of my pet while I was away. I would recommend to anyone! Jenn and her associate Jessica are fantastic!!

I hired Kyle to take care of my cat while I was out of town. I was pleased with his professionalism, and my cat must have been pleased too - she came to say hello to him every day (I know because he sent me pictures!), which she usually doesn't do when strangers are around! I'd definitely recommend Kyle, and would hire him again.

My experience with Bruce could be described as nothing less than a blessing. He is extremely easy to talk to, answers any question, and truly cares about you, your pet and your experience. He is very informative and is willing to work with your needs. AND it’s a plus he comes straight to you! I cannot wait to continue to work with Bruce and believe he will do great things for me and my pup.

Donna and her team provided superlative care of my dog and fish (and house for that matter) while my family and I were traveling out of the country. I will recommend Prima Donna Pet Services to others and I will most certainly use them again.

Our little 14-year old guy has problems with his back legs and because of this we were struggling with where to have him groomed. Then Nancy’s Shaggy to Chic Mobile Dog Grooming came to our rescue. We were able to have our guy groomed in the comfort and security of his own home. And Nancy was so kind and gentle with him. She talked to him throughout, calming his fears and giving him kisses and hugs. She even provided treats which he happily gobbled up! Nancy took her time with him – adjusting to his temperament – and transformed him from the shaggy guy he was to the chic guy he is. She provided the towels, all the equipment and the love. We only needed to provide a place to wash him. If you are looking for a professional groomer who really cares about you and your pet, we highly recommend Nancy’s Shaggy to Chic Mobile Dog Grooming. Couldn’t be happier.

Kate has done pet care for our three cats on two occasions. In each case we were gone for a week. Kate not only does the usual things like feeding and emptying the litter boxes, she will also give medications if required. Kate is very thorough in taking information about the cats so she is familiar with their habits and behaviors. She doesn’t just come in, feed them and clean the litter boxes and leave. She spends a good amount of time with the cats giving them attention. Kate had us prepare a letter to the vet’s office giving her permission to request medical attention in case there was a need. We are very satisfied with Kate’s work and plan to ask her to care for our cats in the future.

As we had just moved to a new area we didn't have anyone who could help take care of our cats for the week we were away. Ed responded quickly to my inquiry and did a great job. He kept us up to date with how they were doing and I could relax and know they were taken care of. We will definitely use him again next time we go away.

Greenfuzz (i.e., Amber) cared for my cat Sally while I was moving from New York to Louisiana. She did a marvelous job of keeping Sally happy. She watched her for a relatively long time (around two weeks?) which was great because I didn't want to board the cat, and she kept me up to date on the stuff Sally does when I'm away with notes and the occasional picture. I would recommend Greenfuzz with no reservations. I would trust her in my house, I would trust her with my animals, in fact, she's the person in the world I would trust most to care for my pets. Honestly, you should hire her even if you don't have any pets. Can't recommend enough.

Sindee has been walking our dog, Casey, on weekly basis. She has been doing it for almost a year. She is very reliable and truely loves our puppy. She calls me and texts me with any concerns she might have with regard to our dogs well being. She is always looking out for Casey's best interest and loves her as if she were her own. I would highly recommend her to anyone that needs someone to care for their dog.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

    • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
    • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
    • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
    • What are your different walk routes?
    • When will you pick up and drop off?
    • How will we communicate?
    • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
    • What’s your cancellation policy?
    • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
    • How and how often do I pay you?
    • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

    • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
    • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
    • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
    • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
    • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
    • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
