These guys were amazing! Setting up the appointment was easy, the technician was extremely punctual and very knowledgable. I live in a 50 year old building so who knows what's behind the wall (I have the holes to prove it) - but he knew immediately and was able to get everything mounted exactly how I had pictured it. Will definitely be relying on these guys in the future!

My experience with Skilled Service Repair & Installation was GREAT!! Joe showed up on time was very knowledgeable about how to perform the tasks needed. He was very efficient in executing the required jobs in a timely and orderly fashion. My apartment walls are old and although it was a challenge hanging my 6ft 3 in mirror he made sure the mirror was secure and the area was safe for my children to play without worry. There was little to no mess when he was done and I felt extremely comfortable with the job he did. I would absolutely recommend his service to anyone in need of a service and repairman.

Sewell did an excellent job building my Gorilla Playsets Double Down Residential Wood Playset with Swings it took him about 2 days to build (due to the weather) but it was well worth the wait my son loved it as his early birthday gift. I highly recommend Sewell and will be using his skills for other projects, thank you so much Sewell!

I hired them for major renovation of my house such as floor, entire kitchen, opening a wall, painting, central air, French drain, front steps, etc. They also get ready for our rental floor on time, so we can rent it timely manner. Price was very reasonable, but last 10% of work took very long time. It was very annoying that it got delay so long since first 90%of work was done faster than expected. However, they were honest about why it was delayed which I liked about. After all, I would hire them again for further house renovation.

DaNa Clean Ups and More did an outstanding job cleaning out our garage. We were very concerned about the clean up because we were struggling to get rid of mice in our garage for quite some time and we didn't know how many items were destroyed by the mice and their droppings. This was a huge undertaking, but Francisco and his staff not only removed everything from the garage while constantly disinfecting everything as they went along, but they were also extremely courteous, kind and respectful. The job was done in 5 hours and the garage looked brand new when they were done. I absolutely will recommend them to everyone I know.

Glenn Scelza is a godsend. My old friend desperately needed help of a good carpenter to come and assess the benign neglect on the front of her antique home. Garage doors needed to be installed post haste, but the garage door company needed the repairs to be made first. I posted on Thumbtack and Glenn responded immediately. Glenn arrived and I could tell right away what a nice guy he is and is a seasoned carpenter/contractor. He assessed the project with a trained eye and zeroed in on what was good in terms of the construction and what looked bad to us, was very doable indeed.. He was very resourceful and made use of what could remain and shopped locally which I loved, for lumber, gutters, leaders and even found the novelty clapboard pieces to match the 1940's facade. He was very fair and open about what things would cost along with his craftsmanship which was worth every penny. I appreciate he could even work with us so late in the season even as winter weather set in. He will be present right after the holiday weekend to connect with the garage door people. When those vintage looking doors are installed the place will regain its curb appeal once again, thanks to Glenn. This guy is a keeper and I can see why is highly recommended! I add my recommendation to Thumbtack as well as our neighbors in the community. I look forward in working with Glenn on future projects. Thanks Glenn! Norm Peekskill, NY

Arrived on time and were able to haul out over 6 tons of debris and old shingle. The materials they used were good, worked quick and efficient, they were in and out in 4 days. I also liked that they covered all the plants and outdoor furniture with tarps, covered my attic completely with tarps and cleaned out debris that came through the cracks. I didn't know they could also install 2 solar fans and full length ridge vents I had, they were able to do the installation for me which was a plus. I only write reviews whenever things go extremely good or extremely bad and I see there's a reason why they get top ratings .This wasn't the first roofing company I had contacted about the job but they stood out from the rest with stellar communication and best prices, will certainly call them again when my garage roof needs replaced!

Luca is a gem of a human and I’m so grateful I found him. I had a very obscure idea to build bookshelves for my nursery into a non working fireplace in my apartment. He was very responsive, patient with me while I tried to describe what I wanted, and built exactly what I wanted in about a week — sending me photos of various wood color options and style of brackets to make sure it was exactly right. He even made them so they pop in and out easily in case I want to paint or need to take them out because I’m renting. The price he gave me was an amazing deal. Since then, he has fixed a latch on a vintage hutch (found the matching vintage latch online himself, purchased and installed in a few minutes) and also came by last minute to fix a leg on another vintage piece that I thought for sure would require a completely new piece. He of course was able to completely repair it in about ten minutes with a replica bolt he had and saved me so much heartache. He’s delightful to be around, kind, punctual and incredibly talented. I will continue to hire him for basically anything I need done in the future. Highly recommend!

We had various jobs that needed doing -- rotting wood on the garage door frame and painting the frame, toilet handle that needed replacing, leaking outdoor hose spigot, and moldy caulking around our shower. Donald came to our home on time and easily repaired and/or replaced the things that needed his attention. The results are great. He is really easy to work with and a lovely man. The cost was reasonable. We certainly will call him again when our aging home needs care.

After my wife and I decided to renovate our apartment in a pre-war building, we wanted to hire a team that would manage the entire project from design to finish. After interviewing several companies, we hired New Space for their beautiful portfolio and positive references. Frank and his team delivered what he promised in our sales meeting. From the design to selecting the material and from building approval to DOB permits, they were always available to answer questions, suggest creative solutions, and keep the project moving along. If any issues or concerns came up, New Space was always on top of it and very responsive. The quality and the details of the work were stellar. We are so happy with the results. Frank and his team did a wonderful job. We would hire them again in a heartbeat.

I hired Zack for my kitchen remodel. He did an amazing job. He is very understanding and was always open to ideas. He is extremely experienced in remodeling homes and is very familiar with the building codes since he is also a home inspector. He was referred to me by my neighbor who also had his kitchen done. The format of his home was exactly like ours but Zack had different ideas for our kitchen since our family is larger , he removed the wall that was separating the kitchen and dining room and installed base cabinets in between the two rooms with a very attractive counter top that really catches my guests attention as soon as they enter the front door. Overall i was very satisfied with the work he did for me and i would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone including my family and friends

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
