Jason seems a nice person. Reasonable price and knew how to resolve a plumbing issue. He had to redo the piping work for kitchen sink. He knew what he was doing. Also he installed my Nest thermostat and it seems to be working fine. He could only test the heating though and I have to wait to see if cooling is OK? My feeling is that it will be fine but I still need to wait till May 2016.

I had tried a couple of other places that are my "go-to" companies for heating and cooling work, and since they were not available and I couldn't seem to find anyone when my central AC stopped working (on this 86 degree day), I decided to post on Thumbtack. Action Air responded almost immediately and had Sam at my place in under 2 hours (on a weekend I might add). He was very professional and got everything up and working again in no time. Next time, it looks like I may have a new "go-to" company. High recommend these guys.

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

Central air conditioner on the roof was not working. They showed up the same day as promised. Fixed the problem and the price was reasonable, particularly when considering how HVAC contractors can be huge rip-offs

We bought a house a little over a year ago in Springfield. In that time we have run across some truly dishonest and unprofessional people. I must say the Billy is by far the best person that we ever allowed to work on any plumbing in our home. He has fixed a multitude of problems for me from water pressure issues to leaky pipes that were previously installed incorrectly. The man is a godsend. Thanks Billy!

Keep me informed of his arrival time for both the estimate and work; arrived on time for both. Stanley is very knowledgeable of his plumbing trade. He understood my request of minimizing the hole in the wall that was needed to access the corroded pipes. He needed to shut off all water in the house to replace the two values for the hot and cold water leading to the bathroom. Replacing these two values was first on his list which allowed for the water in the other parts of the house. Did a thorough job on cleaning up after completion. Tested his completed work allowing me to verify that everything is operational. I do recommend him. He's a young man who learned his trade from his two experienced brothers. Don't let his age be of concern. He replaced faulty galvanized piping with Pex and add a heating element to my baseboard heat in one of the bedrooms. Excellent workmanship. Wayne

I was very pleased with P&M mechanical. Before installing two new heating and cooling units for us, Phil went over all of our options. Once we decided to go with new units instead of repairing the old ones, the work was completed quickly, professionally, and was affordable. I highly recommend P&M Mechanical.

A few weeks ago, on what at the time was the "coldest day of the year" our furnace wouldn't engage; as it had lost all communication with our thermostat. As my wife and I recently moved to the area, we were unsure of whom to call.... I was able to reach Joe from Olsen Heating & Cooling ((862)254-0894) around 6PM on a Friday evening and he was at our house WITHIN THE HOUR. Joe was courteous (he even put booties on before coming in our house to keep our rugs clean), very knowledgeable, and great to work with. In about 80 minutes time, Joe not only had our system back online but also performed an overdue annual maintenance on our furnace; all for a very fair/reasonable price. It's nice knowing that their are great local companies (Sand Shore Dr.) that can help when you need them most. Strongly recommended!

I am not someone who normally writes reviews, partly because I am very private and also because I am very hard to please. But after the quality of job delivered by 1 Stop Plumbing, I had no choice but to put in a good word. The company has a tremendous reputation online as I did a thorough research on them before I made the call. Plus, every one of their plumbers belongs to the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors (PHCC). If ever you have plumbing issues, then look no further than 1 Stop Plumbing and Drainage.

This was one of my projects that turned out great and I get to write about how good the pro was. I finally came up with the money to have a ductless air system installed. I spent a bit more than I wanted but I also upgraded to a more powerful system. No pressure to do so, I just wanted something stronger. There was a heat wave coming the day before my install so this pro was able change his schedule to install the unit a day before the heat wave. Great follow up and overall great experience. I saved his card to upgrade my furnace in my home next year.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
