To Whom It May Concern, April 2016
I should begin this statement by telling you that I am a self-proclaimed lazy human. When people asked me if I went to the gym, my response would be, "I hate exercise." And it was true. I would start up a program, quit, take classes, get bored or intimidated... I was always too busy, too broke, and too tired. And with that being said, I was chubby and unhealthy and had very little strength ability. I tried every fad diet in the book. My weight would be up and down constantly and I never held any goal for more than a week or two. I am 33 years old, 5'9, and at the beginning of this program my weight fluctuated between 166-169 pounds. My initial Body Composition read at [34%] which put me in the "overweight" category.
I began a personal training program with Arthur Ostrom on February 2014, 4 months before my wedding date. I came clean with Arthur about all of my unhealthy habits. And his mantra remained the same: "This is fitness and nutrition for EVERY DAY LIFE. I am never going to tell you that you can't eat or drink something." And believe me, I was skeptical. I had a true phobia of carbs (it was definitely the bread products that were causing my fat thighs, could never be the beer and cocktails...) and would go hours without eating anything and indulge in big meals in between. And although my food choices weren't awful, Arthur encouraged me to change the way that I was eating. He helped me build a diet plan that definitely fit my lifestyle. And at first, I felt like I was eating way too much, but then I started to understand the program. I ate less at meal times, and made better choices because I wasn't starving.
I started training one day a week. I had tried personal training before and always left in excruciating pain, barely able to walk the next day. Arthur took things slowly at first, assessing my abilities and my limitations. We took time to stretch between exercises. The next day, I could definitely feel the work we had done, but I wasn't in pain and felt confident to try again the next week.
Each session got increasingly more difficult, but in such a gradual way that I never felt discouraged or apprehensive about the program. I began to feel more confident about my abilities and eager to try some of the things that I was petrified of before. Arthur was with me every step of the way. He emailed me after every session, recapping our work and sending me articles and ideas for recipes and workouts. This was probably the most important aspect of my program. I was accountable to someone and that person cared about how I felt after my sessions, what I was eating, and how I felt my progress was. I was never afraid to ask questions and Arthur was always prompt in responding.
I went from one session a week, to two, and ended with three sessions the final week before my wedding.
Together, Arthur and I changed not only my appearance, but more importantly, my lifestyle. I am currently at a weight of 159 pounds and my Body Composition has decreased to [30%] placing me in the normal range. I feel amazing in my wedding dress and am looking forward to continuing my sessions with Arthur after the big day!
