I needed some help with algebra in 8th grade. My parents had heard of Jeremy from a friend, so we got in touch and he started tutoring me. Jeremy is an excellent tutor. He helped me with my Algebra and all of my other subjects. He has a vast array of knowledge in all subjects ranging from Algebra to History. On top of that, Jeremy taught me what was important to focus on. He helped me prepare for the SAT and showed me how important it was. I went on to do excellent on it. This is what separates him from other tutors. He informs you of things that will be important in the future even when it has nothing to do with what you are learning in class. All the while, Jeremy is friendly and down to earth. It felt like a friend or family member was tutoring me. I truly couldn't give him high enough praise.

Great time with Sasha learning pre algebra, I know it doesn't make sense, but she is really great at making math much more clear. She helped me achieve a very good score on my CUNY entrance exams.

Needed math strategy tips, study planning advice, as well as general supplementary algebra 2 tutoring to get my algebra on the college level necessary to pass the CLEP exam. Aron was extremely helpful in both directing me to areas that needed improvement and in helping me improve them. Definitely recommended. 5 stars!

Dillon is really good & professional with Piano tutoring. So far my son Yashas is enjoying the lessons. Although Dillon has a busy schedule, he manages to be on time for the lessons just that sometimes we do not get the full 30 minutes of lesson time.

Lenore has been helping me hone my math skills in order to pass a placement exam. I feel lucky to have found her on Thumbtack. She is knowledgeable and patient. She clearly cares about my success and goes out of her way to accommodate my needs as well as my schedule. I intend to continue working with her in order to pass both the Elementary and College Algebra portions of the test so that I can complete my associates degree and move onto the University for my four year degree. I can honestly and emphatically recommend Lenore as a teacher, tutor and advocate! Sent from my iPhone

Student Information: • Current senior in high school. • Received tutoring in Calculus (currently taking AP Calculus BC). Tutor was very thorough. He made sure I had a strong pre-calc/calc foundation established before he moved onto more difficult topics. He continually reinforced previous lessons and connected them to new lessons. He not only taught lessons but also gave problem-solving strategies for problems in past AP tests. In my opinion, Mr. Siegerman is a very experienced and intelligent tutor.

Justin really helped me focus in on the areas that were major hurdles for me in math. I had always felt like I couldn't overcome my mental blocks in Algebra because it didn't come naturally to me and he gave me the confidence to look at the problems in a different light. I am so thankful I was able to find him!

Against our daughters wishes, we insisted on hiring a tutor for the new common core algebra-2/trigonometry class. Our daughter was often grumpy and belligerent during tutoring sessions, but Natalya handled the situation with grace and patience, and consequently they developed a nice rapport. Our daughter did well in the class and passed her regents exam. We would recommend Nataliya without any reservations. -- Jackie Straus

Stuart had several tutoring with one of my daughters who was struggling with honors algebra 2. She hates math yet regularly came out of 1.5-2 hour tutoring sessions with a big smile on her face. Her grades have gone up along with her confidence. Stuart works not only on math skills but also on techniques for reducing math anxiety. He has sadly moved away from our area but my daughter continues to do well in her class. We will be having some Skype sessions with him if she encounters further challenges or needs a confidence boost. I highly recommend him.

Danny is really great. I am working with Danny to take the CLEP exam in Algebra and it has been many, many years since I have been in school, so I remember very little about the subject. Danny is very knowledgeable and warm and immediately puts me at ease. He is dependable and calm and always manages to lift my spirits when I get discouraged. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

My daughter is taking Algebra 2 honors in he freshman year so it was difficult for her from begginng to catch up the program. We decided to find a tutor for her and found Mr. Hammerman. He is extremely patient and very knowledgeable. He has been working with my daughter for two month and her math skill and confidence improved greatly. Since then her grades went from C+ to A and gets above 90 in her test and quizzes. Mr. Hammermen is always available when we need him and is always on time. We would highly reccomend him as a math tutor.

Though our 3rd grade child is a good reader, he was experiencing problems with writing and composition. He was behind his classmates. Over the summer we engaged Meghan for 10 lessons to work with him on composing written pieces, on the physical process of writing and on organization skills. To my great surprise, our son loved the lessons even though they were during summer break. She diagnosed a problem with the way he was making his letters (and therefore hindering his ability to write) and gave him new techniques to practice. She showed him how to organize papers and keep them neat. They worked on approaches to writing about subjects that interested him and he was so enthused by what he learned, he did his homework pieces right after class rather than waiting until the last minute. We found Meghan to be very encouraging and supportive and our son grew in confidence in his own abilities. It was a very enjoyable experience for him. For us parents, she kept us up to date with emails detailing his progress after each lesson. Our child is two months back at school and has just been awarded Student of the Month. Meghan is an excellent, committed and skilled teacher and we would highly recommend her.

I have nothing but nice things to say about Rachel! I was taking back to back online courses for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 from September to December. Considering I hadn't done Algebra since high school and now being a senior in college I figured it would probably be a good idea to find a tutor to help get me through the courses. I was able to meet with Rachel twice a week for about an hour to an hour and a half. She's very flexible and will work with you to find an area to meet! We would generally meet for our sessions at a Starbucks around the corner from my job. She is very knowledgable about all aspects of Algebra and was great at explaining all of the concepts that were covered in my course. She was also very patient and worked with me at a pace that made me feel very comfortable, and to top it all off she's sooo nice! I definitely recommend her for anyone needing tutoring for Algebra in the NYC area!

I have been taking SAT prep lessons with 2 different teachers. My English tutor is a native speaker and my new math teacher connects with me from India. Both are very professional and experienced. My Math teacher is I think the best I probably had. The only problem was when I wanted to change my schedule because it's hard to do that after everything is already arranged.

I hired Jay to tutor my son for 10 -12th grade math and science courses and SAT/ACT prep during the summers. He always excelled at essays and vocabulary, but had difficulty processing algebra. From his first tutoring session, my son's confidence improved and his math & science grades climbed. He worked hard and enjoyed the lessons. His best scores in the SAT & ACT were in math and he was accepted into his first choice university. It really did take a village of good people to help my son realize his potential. Jay is one of the best mentors you could have on your side.

There are not enough superlatives to describe how wonderful Carlos Juarez is! He has been tutoring our now 11 year old son for 2 years. Our son comes home from a long day at school and can't wait to begin his tutoring session with Carlos. He has learned a tremendous amount during each session and, most importantly, he has gained the confidence to attack the most challenging of math problems, due to the way Carlos approaches his tutoring. He offers suggestions, solutions, and challenges our son's mind so that he can manage the math work on his own. Carlos has tremendous resources to target lessons to our son's needs. There is not anything more we could have wanted from our tutoring experience. Anyone who works with Carlos, has been given a GIFT! Good Luck and Enjoy.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
