Walter has done two jobs for me so far: removed various pavers from my backyard and repaired my concrete patio. Both times he proved to be dependable and professional and did a great job. Very friendly and his prices are always fair.

I had a BIG powerwashing job: 2story home, white pvc fencing with moss and mold along with trex decking and belgian blue pavers on the front porch. The job was done with great attention to detail and care. The outcome is majestic: gleaming white soffits, pavers like new as well as sealed and sanded, decking fresh and house aglow! A FULL day of work for 2 guys that brought their equipment, set up, did the job and were courteous and gracious. I would recommend 100%. Now, I hired them for painting. An excellent value and easy electronic payment. These are the guys for any job! Even my neighbor came out and hired them too. You will be as impressed as I am. Stunning!!

I initially contacted Shawn for a small job, but after meeting him I and discussing some other bigger projects I was preparing to do, I ended up hiring for all the repair and remodeling work I needed. Shawn and his team replaced the roof, demolished and rebuilt a wrap-around front porch entirely, put in a new paver patio and underground pvc drain pipes, and replaced all the gutters and downspouts. Shawn also built a custom cabinet door in the kitchen. Everything was well done, and any changes or modifications I asked for were done without hesitation. Shawn is an honest and down to earth guy, and is able to handle all types of home remodeling needs. He is always available to answer any questions, and responded to any issues or changes I asked for right away. You feel like you have a friend working with you, and not just a businessman. This shows in the great job Shawn and is team does. I would certainly hire Shawn again for future work.

I have been working with Jose Calle and his crew for many years. He is reliable and the quality of is his work is very professional. He has done my yard work and snow removal for years. Most recently we had him do our patio with pavers and driveway apron. We are pleased with his work and after receiving several estimates from other companies, his pricing was very reasonable and fair.

I hired Jay Quin Contracting to replace a set of basement stairs and install pavers in my backyard. The work they did was outstanding and was beyond and thing I could expect. After they completed this work I rehired them to create a room in the basement. They explained the whole plan before starting. Jay Quin Contracting is an excellent company that strives to fully satisfy. They truly listened to my desires and made sure to explain all possible options and limitations that could lie ahead. They have a trustworthy, courteous and hardworking group of craftsman. The end was everything and more than I was hoping for. You made my family very happy and proud of all the work you did. Thank you!‎

I originally contacted Sam and Munir regarding the installation of a front gate but we were also wanting to redo our back patio and decided to prioritize that job. Sam came out and listened to the extensive work we wanted done (repair of a retaining wall, installation of new cellar door, installation on new back steps, and installation of a paver patio with drains) and provided a reasonable quote for the job within a few days. We decided to go with them for the job because of their versatility on multiple projects (instead of having to hiring a few different specialty contractors) and because they had installed a fence for us before and we were happy with the work. Once we agreed to move forward, they worked for 8 straight days to complete the project in a timely manner. We are very happy with the final result, the patio looks amazing! They were as communicative as we wanted them to be during the process and responsive when I wanted a small style change mid-job, but I also didn't feel like I needed to check in all the time as the work was progressing. I would definitely recommend them for any backyard project, particularly a paver patio.

As homeowners, one of the most difficult decisions we make is selecting a contractor to perform work at our home. We meet many contractors in our search. We do our best to evaluate each contractor that we meet for quality, knowledge, reputation, price, etc. but we recognize that we are not experts in any of these areas. Over the past 20 years of owning a home in Paramus, NJ, we have selected many contractors for a variety of large projects; Fencing (2), Deck; Landscaping, Irrigation, Swimming Pool, Shed, Patio, Additions (2), Roofing, Siding, Gutters, Pavers, Hardscape, Water Feature, Cabana/Shed. Looking back, some of or contractor selections have been poor at best. They have left us dreading to start the process for another project. Many, on the other hand, have been satisfactory therefore restoring our confidence in my ability to get through the selection process. Then, there are a select few that have exceed our expectations. The funny part is we knew, as soon as we met them, that they would. When you were outlining your project to them, they were professional, attentive to your needs and truly showed interest. They offered ideas for enhancements, not alternatives, to what you were looking for. They offered a fair price for the work to be performed as compared to the others you received. Building Paradise is one of these select few. Olman and his crew, exceeded our expectations at every level from design, to workmanship, to clean-up. Our project was to replace a 15 year old shed with a Cabana/Shed combination. While still needing a small portion for shed storage, we were looking for a private Cabana for our poolside guests to be able to change to/from their swimming attire that incorporates seating, towel storage, with separate cubbies to for multiple guests to store shoes, clothing and personal belongings. We wanted it to have complete privacy and also be elegant enough that our guests would want to use it. From the sliding glass door entry, to the tile floor, to the contrast painting, to the rustic pine ceiling with a lighted ceiling fan as an enhancements that Olman offered, the finished project well exceeded our expectations. Each and every one of our guests compliments the Cabana and I am proud to personally recommend Building Paradise Home Remodeling LLC. I might also add that we have used Olman and his crew on additional projects in 2016 and expect to call upon their services again in 2017.

Stone and Patio Professionals is a great company to work with. If you are someone that doesn't know too much about pavers (like us), patio pavers take the time to explain and guide you through every step of the way. Charles came to our house with a 4" binder, which pretty much had a paper version of a Power Point presentation. He explained who and what the company is and then went on to explain what they do and how they will do it. They're extremely professional and respectful. Charles was our project manager (the best project manager we could have asked for) and he was here every day to go over plans with his crew. If there were any issues to be taken care of Charles was there. If I needed a question to be answered I would text Charles and the question would get answered with a text back or a phone call. The crew that came to do the work was as equally amazing. They were respectful and did a beautiful job. We are so happy with our new backyard, fire pit, Built in BBQ, retaining wall with led lights, walkway and front porch. The finished product is truly beautiful. The whole process was seamless. If your looking for amazing results and quality work, Stone and Patio Professionals are your people. Thank you for making our outdoor living space as beautiful as the inside of our home.

I had the owner (justin) put in a stone back patio. I could not be happier with the results. Not only was his team respectful of my property, they were on time every day and work very efficiently. They finished the job in a very timely manner. When they were finished they made sure to clean up their mess. I would recommend jmv to anyone who needs a landscaper or paver. THANKS JUSTIN!!!!!!!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
