Sasha is the greatest math tutor I could have asked for. I had no confidence in my GRE math ability before working with Sasha, and a few weeks later, now two days before my test, I know that there's no problem I can't handle. That's all thanks to Sasha.

Aron is an excellent and patient math tutor. He is very knowledgeable and was a tremendous asset to my successes with the SAT test! My SAT score increased significantly once I had 8 sessions with him. Aron did a wonderful job clearly explaining the areas I struggled with and was even able to come up with his own example problems on the spot. He made me feel comfortable and provided confidence which I took into the SAT. He is also very accommodating and flexible with scheduling. I cannot say enough good things about him.

My oldest of three children is 22 years old so I have been through my fair share of tutors. Lenore is the best tutor I have encountered. She really cares for her students and will go above and beyond to help them succeed. Needless to say, I would highly recommend Lenore.

SAT is NO joke! Katya is a laser-focused tutor and helped me get a HIGH score. She actually takes SAT and ACT tests herself and always scores in the 99th percentile. I don’t know any other tutors that do that. She is very smart, but also very cool. We saw each other twice a week for about 5 months before my test. It made a difference of almost 300 points! Use her!!!

Best Tutor EVER. Frank worked with my three children and they all repeatedly reported that he is the most effective and helpful math tutor they have ever had (and they've had several). He is infinitely patient even with students who really struggle. They all said that Frank helped them understand some topics that they never understood before and that he was clearer than their school teachers. I give him my highest recommendation.

Even in a short period of time, I still got a lot of the tutoring sessions. Great at identifying the problem and getting to the root of it then helping to solve it. Overall pretty helpful.

I have never been good at math but Mustafa makes it seem so easy. He breaks down each section and explains it in the simplest form. He always ensures that you understand the topic before he moves on. With his help, I have been able to pass my tests and can now graduate high school. Mustafa cares about everyone he works with and never turns anyone away.

My daughter got tutoring from their tutor Justin who is extremely nice and caring. We worked with them for two months prior to the test which I was not sure if it was enough or not, but it paid off in the end, because my daughter improved her SAT score by 300 POINTS. It was amazing. They really gave her the skills and confidence needed to improve her score. We would go back to them for any help we need. And now my daughter is working with Jacqueline on her college admissions essays and application.

Charles was a great Math tutor. He has a great level of understanding in various areas of of the subject and is able to teach in a way that can help anyone understand. He has helped me as well as many of the students I serve in Algebra, Statistics, and Calculus. He has even been able to help one of my students with special learning needs. In addition, I was able refer Charles to friend who was completing doctorate work and he helped her with her data analysis. Great job!

Was my potential unlocked? Yes! I was struggling in my Precalculus class last year and until I came to Accel Learning for help, only then was I able to understand the concepts in math class. Currently, I'm working on mastering some sections in Trignometry. Amish Bhavsar truly cares about his students and will go out of his way to make sure they are understanding the concepts.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
