We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

Dexter is a great contractor. He is by far the best contractor I had. He was fair in pricing, and very pleasant to work with. I hired Dexter as a contractor to repair electrical problems I was having in and around my house. Dexter provided and displayed the professional knowledge to me and my mother to allow us to make the best possible decisions. Dexter took on and completed projects that previous contractors started and did not finish. He even troubleshooted the entire project and did the necessary work that the previous contractors didn't want to do. This goes to show that he can be counted on to give 110 percent under all circumstances whether he began the project or he is picking up in the middle from which someone did not finish the project. Basically he does things the correct way--he does not "cut-corners." Regardless of the situation, Dexter will do everything possible to make sure that his performance is correct and done right. Dexter is a great electrician. You should definitely hire him as a contractor.

Edward was receptive initially and was able to come do the job the next day. We had an initial quote from another company for almost $1000 doing unnecessary things to our kitchen and bathroom. Edward did it for a tenth of the price. He is def. our go-to plumber. Thanks so much!

Greivin was on time and very professional. He Demo'd out my bathroom tile floor and subfloor to access a broken drain pipe. He taped and protected the surrounding so dust wasn't every where. I would use his services again.

I want to thank Darin Sliker for all of the help he provided for me and my mother. I live in the state of Va. and my mother lived in N.J. I had been trying to secure a contractor for repairs that were needed in her tenants bathroom. My mother is 85 yrs. young and needless to say she did not know who to contact for this job. So after trying several contractors, a cousin of mine suggested I go online to "Thumbtacks.com and the rest is history! Darin was very friendly, helpful and very informative. He didn't mind me calling, texting or emailing him at any time. That meant so much considering I live out of state. The work that was done to the bathroom was great and I will always be grateful to Darin and those who worked with him on this project!

Global Housing Contractors did a beautiful job with our bathroom renovations. We were impressed with their punctuality, reliability, and great care in protecting the rest of our home while work was getting done. Tile work was a bit involved in one of our two bathrooms, but Global Housing contractors took the extra time and care to make sure it was installed to perfection. It is obvious that customer satisfaction and quality of work are their top priority. I would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors for all your housing makeover needs!

Complete bathroom renovation. Demolition, removal, new walls, all new fixtures and tub plumbing, custom built-in cabinetry, and porcelain tile floors. Glenn and partner measured meticulously and finished everything when they said they would without damaging stair and hallway. Couldn't have asked for more for this cramped upstairs renovation in our older home.

(This message originally sent directly to Home Geeks): Dear Vince: I want to take this opportunity to compliment your wonderful crew on two jobs very well done. I really can't say enough good things about Denis Esposito and his partner, Mike (whose last name, regrettably, I didn't get). The interior work they did on my basement and kitchen, as well as the exterior work above my bay window all turned out beautifully. Their hard work (under some brutal weather conditions), attention to detail, and dedication to quality was nothing short of exceptional. I've never seen any workmen go so far above and beyond the call of duty as they did (particularly Denis). I hope you'll pass my thanks to Denis and Mike for their outstanding efforts. The repairs to my home that they completed far exceed "satisfactory." On that basis, I'd have no reservations in contacting Home Geeks for any future work to be done, or in recommending the company to anyone needing a high-quality contractor. Sincerely, Rick

It is my pleasure to recommend the excellent work of Rick Doggett who was the general contractor for a remodeling project of my apartment in Jersey City. From the initial interaction and proposal phase through construction and the timely completion of the job, Rick and his crew performed at the highest level of professionalism, work ethics, and dedication. The work involved a complete re-structure of the internal floor plan, moving walls, installing new fixtures, hardwood floor and carpet, electrical, plumbing, and painting, while communicating with an owner who was not on location. I would, with no hesitation, engage Rick in any future construction or remodeling that will come-up. Thank you Rick and crew for a wonderful job.

JTK Remodeling, Tim, did a fine job with the projects I needed help with. He was right on time and got right to work. He had asked me to send him pix prior to coming to do the work so he prepped and made sure he had the right materials to complete the job - no surprises - well there was 1 little surprise, not his fault, and he managed to work around it anyway. Very personable.

I had a very good experience working with Ty and his team. Ty was very responsive throughout the process of remodeling two bathrooms in my apartment. He was very good at communicating the timeline for the project and keeping my husband and me abreast of progress made each week and each day. He has a good, hard working team that put in a lot of effort to meet daily and weekly targets for completion of the project.

I would like to highly recommend the general contractor who handled my townhouse’s third remodeling and renovation project, Mr. Mario Bissessar, owner and principal of City Line Interiors, Inc. The job project went extremely smoothly and was completed in a highly professional, efficient manner; I am very pleased with both the process and the beautiful results. The project was multi-faceted, complicated -as any remodeling entails- including a lot of details, involving multiple building sectors such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, tiling and paintings, metal work, having to respect landmark rules and blending with the existing structure. The crew led by Mario was very cohesive, punctual, talented, productive, flexible and friendly. His team is fluent in English (with a variety of charming Caribbean accents). Mario is very responsive, an excellent communicator and a great team leader. He was there every day, not only overseeing the work but very much hands-on, with precious skills, including carpentry. Mario also contributed great design ideas and judicious trouble-shooting solutions. Of course, I made several last minute changes or additions, which inflated the original budget but the corresponding charges were well itemized, justified and very reasonable. The payment schedule was without surprises and always well timed. It does not hurt that Mario is also an IT wizard…. All his subcontractors (electricity, plumbing, HVAC and metal work) were fantastic: they delivered diligently on the promised dates. It makes a big difference when subcontractors are well coordinated; they obviously knew and respected each other well, and were happy to work with Mario Bissessar.

Hired for a big job, 2 bathrooms gutted, redo downstairs area, finish wood floors, replace 8 door frames, some remodel stuff and paint. Did a very good job, would use again. Only issue was the end of the job felt rushed as we were moving in and he had a deadline. He was doing finishing work while the moving truck was unloading. Overall quite good just maybe better use of schedule on future work would be my recommendation

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
