She was on-time, friendly and accommodated a few off-collar hors d'oeuvre menu requests. She explained the dishes as she served them and even threw in an additional appetizer for good measure. The only minor drawback is that she had another even scheduled right after this event, so people felt a little rushed during dinner and dessert. I'd work with Ellen again in a heartbeat. Recommended? Highly.

It was my wife's birthday dinner, and kids and I asked Chef Chris to come help us cook. Kids (ages 9.5 and 8) had a blast learning from Chef Chris! We had wonderful time and great memories were made. The kids were so excited, Chef Chris was very hands on - guiding them and keeping the excitement up, and getting them to cook several pizzas, soup, and a yummy dessert (including home made whipped cream). Highly recommend as a fun family bonding time that includes learning how to make a delicious meal and then enjoying the meal together!

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. I used Tamara for my engagement party and she was fantastic! I had about 60 people and we started with passed h'ourderves during a cocktail hour in one room (she provided the staff and a bartender). While this happened she was setting up the buffet dinner in another room. She let me know when it was ready and then (timing was flawless) we moved into the second room for dinner. My friends and family raved about the food, which included gluten-free and vegan options as many had dietary restrictions. We had a French theme as I had gotten engaged in France and Tamara worked with me on a French menu, including a delicious chocolate-hazelnut crepe desert with fresh berries. She was totally on-point with timing, presentation, and professional execution, including proactively handling things like insurance with the building so it wasn't a hassle for me. The reason I initially chose her was because she was more reasonable than the other bids I received for caterers in New York but she offered identical services to what they had proposed and she went the extra mile the day of the event. I will definitely be using her again and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am still receiving compliments on her food and the friendliness/professionalism of her staff.

The food was delicious and elegantly served. The wait staff were also lovely. Particularly loved the strawberry shortcake for dessert and the chicken marsala.

We had a 50th Anniversary party for our friends in our yard and it was perfect. From the beginning Francesca helped us plan the menu, including taking into account all dietary restrictions, coordinate the tent and all needed party rentals. She answered every question and all the changes needed. They arrived exactly on time the day of the party to set it up the whole evening was perfect, changing some placements and keeping the party going without any break. Francesca and Ashley worked the party, once the setup was complete, and were so perfect. The food was displayed beautifully, they set up the bar as requested and even though we did not ask for service directly to the tables they came around at different times to see what guests needed, especially some older ones. An unexpected very short rainfall had them bring the coffee, tea and desserts to the guests to keep it out of the rain. The cleanup was impressive and perfect, they even washed the kitchen floor at the end! We loved it as did our guests and the food was delicious!!!! Everyone requested leftovers. I have shopped at DeCiccos for years and this will only keep me coming back. Thank you!

On short notice Erika and I put together a most wonderful evening for my wife on valentines day. Erika was willing to cook us dinner on her way home from another engagement. She was wonderful to work with when setting up our menu. She was able to shop for the necessary ingredients and work around my schedule. Upon arriving home, Erika had delicious appetizers waiting for us. The entrees and side dishes were amazing and cooked to perfection. Dessert was also fantastic. Erika's demeanor was pleasant and professional when engaged in conversation and her presence was virtually undetectable at other times. A lovely evening with great food and service. Thank you Erika.

We could not have asked for a better experience. Tyler was extremely attentive prior to our event and fielded my (many) questions with diligence and patience. The day of event, he went above and beyond all expectations. He went so far as to bring little signs, candles and flower petals to make the dessert arrangement more beautiful than I could have imagined. Him and Josh, the second bartender, were incredibly personable with our guests and made sure everyone was happy and taken care of. HighLife takes absolutely all of the stress out of planning a big party at a very reasonable price. I would recommend Tyler and his team to anyone.

Booked chef Aless for a private dinner on my home for 12 guests. We decided on a menu but of course I changed my mind a few times on items up until the last minute. She was nothing but gracious and professional each and every correspondence and truly worked magic with accommodating the menu to my guests allergies. The actual dinner full course with dessert was to die for. This will be my only private I hire going forward. Thank you chef Aless!

Melissa was great. We had an in-depth conversation up front about our dietary restrictions including a shellfish allergy, a gluten sensitivity, and a dairy sensitivity within our party. Overall, we were aiming for a vegan meal. She worked with us and gave us multiple suggestions on dinner options based on our likes and dislikes. She even came by the house to provide samples of her dishes before the event. The night of the event, she did a great job executing appetizers, dinner, and dessert. The food was delicious and she left our kitchen in better shape than she found. I highly recommend Melissa as your next personal chef!

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

Carol and the whole staff at T&C catering did a phenomenal job on our wedding. They provided us with a buffet, appetizers, dessert, and coffee for about 100. They were extremely accommodating of our dietary restrictions (vegan & vegetarian) and made food that even our meat-eating guests loved. They did a great job helping our largely DIY event run smoothly. Carol is very organized and coordinated really well with our DJ to make sure the dinner portion of the day ran along schedule. We could not be happier with the work that Carol and her team did.

We hosted an in home birthday dinner evening for 10. Oscar arrived early and it felt like they weren't even there. They had all of their necessary materials, serving items etc. My son wanted to watch and they were really nice about that. My husband wanted to discuss wine pairings and Oscar was so good at discussing the options. Dinner knocked it out of the park. We dined on carrot ginger soup, octopus salad, crab stuffed some, and a decadent dessert. We served a decadent meal to meet my husbands desire for his birthday dinner and it was perfection. My 3 and 5 yr old participated and the soup and Octopus disappeared in seconds. The entire menu was more than we discussed and surpassed our expectations. Will definitely hire Oscar again!

Here are some highlights that stuck out: gave advice about all kinds of things leading up to the big day- rehearsal dinner location, invitations, wedding games; really listened to what we like & tailored her suggestions accordingly; was patient with us when we were indecisive; gave us a lot of guidance during the rehearsal; stayed all the way through the end of the night and packed up our parents' cars. One of her major "deliverables" is an awesomely detailed schedule of events! This was a huge asset for us. She was also extremely attentive & helpful! She was direct but not bossy- exactly what we were hoping for. I would definitely recommend her to any brides who need some guidance!

Larry catered for a 400 person event for us at very short notice. He came and gave us a tasting to agree menu in advance, coped brilliantly when we upped our numbers, and on the day was highly organised, delivering fresh Colson pastries for our breakfast and a great lunch. Everyone commented on our food saying it was some of the best conference food they had tasted. We would definitely use Larry's team again and wish them great success.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
