My son's teacher recommended Arbor Tutors and we are very thankful. I'm very impressed with the quality and the education of the tutors. It's like everyone here has an Ivy League education.

We initially hired Jeremy to help my daughter prepare for the ACT's. (She has an auditory processing disorder which can make it difficult for her to grasp certain concepts and Jeremy was recommended as someone who had experience in effectively teaching kids who had similar issues) Last spring, months before we were to officially begin the ACT prep, he stepped in to rescue her from a math class that she was on track to fail. He not only helped reteach her the material in a way she could understand but also liaised with her teacher and advisor to help ensure her success in the class. He has also been very accommodating with scheduling the time-consuming ACT prep sessions and instills my daughter with confidence to tackle the subjects that are particularly difficult for her.

Sasha is the greatest math tutor I could have asked for. I had no confidence in my GRE math ability before working with Sasha, and a few weeks later, now two days before my test, I know that there's no problem I can't handle. That's all thanks to Sasha.

I would like to highly recommend Dr. Howard Siegerman as a tutor of both math and chemistry. He tutored by son Tom when he was taking a difficult series of math courses in middle school and high school. With his encouragement and patience he was able to rebuild Tom's confidence. With this renewed confidence and additional practice, Tom's grades improved dramatically. Dr. Siegerman also mentored Tom in chemistry, providing real life experience to theoretical questions. Tom in now at New York University pursuing a degree in biochemistry.

You know it’s a nightmare out there, looking for the right fit for your kids when you are searching for test prep tutors. I have twins going into the SATs and there are just so many bad teachers out there. I really had to ask Chelsea International a lot of questions when I came across them. I have to say, they blew me away. Not just with their professional nature, but also with their level of expertise, care, and true understanding of what it takes to bring out your child’s fullest potential. I would recommend this tutoring service to anyone. The kids have been working with them now for the last few months, and the difference in their work is amazing. I am really looking forward to seeing their scores after their SAT tests.

My son took the SAT twice, in April and June of this year. He went from an 1170 to an 1130! He needed help, so luckily we got Mr. Goldstein. After 6-7 hrs. of tutoring, my son got his ticket to a better college....1260. It was worth it!

I dont know Akeel from a hole in the wall. In fact I found him on line. I think he lives in New York and I live in Georgia. I say all that to say. Akeel was wonderful, and Very professional and his prices was reasonable, and he was willing to work with you. I hired Akeel to tutor my son who is a sophomore in college in Calculus & Physics and he was very good with my son. And my son really enjoyed working with him. So thank you Akeel for everything. Five months ago, I felt that my five year old should have been further along with reading so I hired Sandy. With Sandy's 26 years of teaching experience, she provides a logical, methodical approach to teaching a child how to read. She also understands that kids, just like adults, can vary from day to day in their mood to learn and perform. She knows how to adjust to my daughter's mood to get the most out of the teaching session. Fast forward five months, I just got out of a parent teacher conference and my daughter has been assessed to be at the top reading level in her class. I give all of the credit to Sandy's way of teaching.

Rafiki is the definition of a great tutor. He went out of his way to create a lesson plan tailored to my particular learning style and helped me learn how to solve math problems more efficiently. He takes teaching seriously and makes solving complex problems simple by breaking them down into simple but logical steps. In addition, he helped me to make my work neater and more organized by providing helpful critique on my answers. Rafiki has never been late for a meeting time and has always been responsive when I needed his help with a problem. You can't go wrong with having Rafiki as a tutor.

I cooincidentally met Dr.Luke and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. At the time I was starting my post baccalaureate to go to PA school, after being out of school for four years. As someone who has had many tutors before, I have to say hands down Dr.Luke is the best I've ever had. He is incredibily knowledgeable (I often called him a genius), but besides that he is a natural teacher. As someone who was completely illiterate in chemistry, he found ways to relate the science to me so that I could understand the concepts. Aside from his teaching and knowledge, Dr.Luke had a unique ability to calm my constant anxiety every time I saw him. When I would get frustrated with myself (which was pretty often), Dr.Luke maintained his compassion and reinstalled his confidence in me, which is rare to find in a tutor. He always checked up on me to see how I was doing and truly cared about my progress. Because of Dr.Luke, I was able to do very well in my post bacc and pursue my goals. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
