Taking singing lessons was really going over an edge for me. It was something "other" people did. I had put it off for decades because I didn't want to appear silly. It was just wishful thinking; part of my secret self. I couldn't have been in better hands with Barbara. She met me exactly where I was at and made me feel comfortable. I had wished to sing one song well. Working with Barbara turns out to be more than that. It's more about expression, finding my voice, playfulness and feeling the song. It's really a growth experience.Nov 15, 2016Verified
Singing Lessons (for adults)
I have been taking lessons from Barbara for several months now. I am a musician but I've never really tried to sing before and I really had no idea what to expect. I am a pretty shy and awkward person and she has made me make a lot of weird noises that would probably make me cry a bit if it were in front anyone else. It's been great fun. After each lesson I feel a bit more confident and energized. If you're looking to improve your voice, you've found the right person. It has been an incredibly fun and rewarding experience and I look forward to each lesson.Apr 21, 2017Verified

Singing Lessons (for adults)
Barbara has been great - she melds classic training methods with a more "holistic" style of approaching voice and singing. As a working singer looking to hone my skills before a big recording session, Barbara has been great at refining my less then favorable habits while highlighting the positive attributes of my voice. The goal in any lesson set is to understand more about your instrument while learning to appreciate the craft and ability to express yourself or a song musically. I walk out of each lesson very happy and more confident in my abilities then the week prior. I will be with Barbara at a minimum for 4 months and would absolutely recommend her to others, both new and experienced singers.Nov 8, 2016Verified
This is an update of my previous review. It’s been a year, now, and I’m still taking weekly lessons from Barbara. I book a lot of gigs and each one is different than the other. Different demands, different occasions, etc. That’s where Barbara shines! I can bring her a selection that I haven’t done in a while, or is not my strongest, but the gig calls for it. Before I know it, it turns into one of my go-to songs. She is also great at working on songs that are out of my genre and comfort zone. I was hired to sing at a wedding cocktail hour AND the bride and groom’s first dance song. The cocktail hour, I did my Sinatra/Rat Pack set, but for the first dance, I was asked to sing a Disney song that was sung by a Disney Princess. Barbara and I looked at the task at hand and plowed thru the challenge. That night, it took me over an hour to break down my equipment because I was being stopped by guests every few minutes telling me how impressed they were. Mostly about the Disney song! In March 2018, I had a gig at The Duplex in NYC. I did a one-hour Sinatra/Rat Pack revue with a friend of mine that I perform with regularly. He hadn’t performed in a long time and I thought, “Who better to bring him in to see?” Barbara took us both in for joint lessons and we worked on pieces for the show. It was a sold out success! Barbara was in the front row and even agreed to warm us up before the show! She also took notes, which we went over at our next lesson! That, to me, is going above and beyond! I perform all these gigs while juggling a full time job. I’m at a point where I’ve been putting some serious thought into performing full time. Barbara has been instrumental in giving me the confidence to make this long time dream a reality. If you’re a singer who wants to take your craft to the next level, whether a beginner or experienced, Barbara is the right choice. The smart choice. Thanks Garrad - looking forward to your next performance.
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?Students can start with four 30 minute sessions at $40 per lesson. After that, most students take an hour long lesson each week for $75 an hour. If you would like to take a 45 minute lesson, that price is $60 a lesson. Inquire about our discount packages (5% or 10% off). A few students like to take a lesson every other week, which is fine. We are working with the muscles around your vocal cords, and they need to be strengthened the same way you would work with muscles at the gym. So if you don't take the lessons at least every other week, we won't be able to make much progress.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Working to build and strengthen your voice. Introducing you to songs that are right for you. Helping you bring your own personal life stories into your singing performances. Working with you on audition songs for shows and college admissions. Teaching your how to take care of your voice when you are sick or hoarse.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Initially, I attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts in their Musical Theater program, and continued studying at NYU Gallatin independent study program where I graducated with honors. In the past 20 years, I have continued to study singing with the best teachers I can find. Not only do I work on my own voice with them, but I apprentice to them by bringing in recordings of my students and asking them about the next level I should work on. The most recent voice teacher I have studied / apprenticed to is Debra Byrd - who was the head voice coach on American Idol for ten years.
