She really enjoys what's she doing and that translates into a positive, productive experience for my dog and me! She also had good practical tips for dealing with puppy issues. We are having great results.

I am absolutely thrilled with the way Sing Lui groomed my dog Pickwick. He can be difficult around strangers sometimes but he immediately felt comfortable with her. Sing understood exactly what kind of cut I wanted and he looks absolutely adorable. She worked quickly and neatly and even told me what kind of brush I should be using on him. I would gladly work with her again and highly recommend her to others.

I found Suki through Thumbtack and couldn't be happier. I live in lower Manhattan and was struggling to find a reliable, qualified and reasonably priced dog walking service after my current walker for ~2 years moved to California. Suki is great to work with. She is flexible and conscious of both mine and Oakley's needs. She updates me on Oakley's walks and is very polite and caring. I couldn't have asked for a better person to take care of my pup when I can't be there. I highly recommend entrusting Suki with your pet care needs.

Jessica is absolutely fantastic. And my pup definitely viewed her as an authority figure from the moment she walked into the apartment. In just two sessions of examining how my pup and I interact and how we interact with the neighborhood on walks, I witnessed great improvement in how he respects me and the leash. She helped me see the importance/benefits of tweaking my relationship with my pup from being "play pals" to being a "team." And the importance of Team Work when out walking on the leash in New York City. Jessica also helped me better understand the cleanest/clearest way to call my pup so he would come to me every time. We are definitely closer to being able to run around off-leash at the park thanks to her!

Kyle and Alanna were awesome with our dog! We were gone for the weekend and we have never left our dog for that long before. I was honestly a nervous wreck the first day, but after getting great reports and photos back from them after each visit, my worrying stopped. Darla, our dog, also seemed very happy with the experience! We will be using them again! (Just asked them to come by another day this week!)

Kristian has been walking my Goldendoodle Penny for two weeks now and he's so great! this is my first experience with a dog walker, so I was a little nervous, but Kristian came to do a meet and greet and was happy to answer any and all of my many questions. He's super thoughtful and thorough and I love the picture update after every walk.

We cannot possibly find compliments big enough to describe how incredible Shara Shon of Pawz Stop has been grooming our goldendoodle. We tried several other groomers who failed miserably at making our dog look good. Then we found Shara who is a remarkable groomer due to her fantastic artistic eye, skill, talent, attention to detail, and a very sharp mind on top of that. Shara did a superb job from the first try. Dogs love her because she understands a dog’s mind like no one else. And she’s also a pleasure to deal with because she understands a client’s mentality like very few people can. All of the above make her a true professional and places her right on top of her craft. Since the moment we were lucky to find her, we’ve been bringing our doodle only to her for grooming. We haven’t had the chance to try her day care services yet, but when the opportunity arises, we would have her dog-sit our pup in a heartbeat. Shara is the absolute best. 💖👍🐾🔝👏

It is my pleasure to share the knowledge that I have referring to Latoya Lawrence and her love for dogs. I have seen Latoya interact with many different animals but her passion for their welfare is rare and special. I owned a Dog that I no longer had the time to care for alone due to my new job. I told Latoya about my newfound dilemma and she stepped in immediately to help. Once I saw how well my dog adapted to her I was extremely comfortable and confident with her help. Latoya helped me until I could manage my new schedule and I cannot thank her enough, even after I had everything under control she still visited and helped as much as she could. I highly recommend Latoya’s services for Dog walking and special care due to all of her wonderful capabilities.

Don't look any further! Peggy is just brilliant! Not only a great pet sitter but a lovely person. I have had many pet sitters in the past and I didn't know this kind of service was possible, she provides daily updates and cute pictures while we are away, she buys Rosita (a tiny chichi) yummy treats and gives her tons of love. She is so responsible, sweet, experienced (she has a big bunch of rescue pets herself) and caring that my dog misses her and of course she stops by once in a while to pet her and let her know she is still around. We feel very lucky to have her in our lives! :-)

Brian Pizza has always arrived on the scheduled dates and times. He can be very accommodating on schedule changes at the last minute. Brian lets me know via email what the dog did on the afternoon walk, and if there are any issues with my dog (i.e. got sick, left 'presents' in the apartment..which Brian cleans up, had an issue with another dog, etc.). Any really big issues, he will call me...like when the dog got sick on a light colored wool rug and it left a stain. I trust Brian with access to my apartment, walking my dog and obeying the pooper scooper laws. Additionally, my dog clearly likes Brian.

Aisha (the owner of Posh Pups JC) is my favorite dog walker. My dog is always as excited to see her as she is to see family members. I think that tells you something about the way Aisha is with dogs in order to get them to love her his much. She radiates a kind, caring and calm energy that puts dogs (and people) at ease. She's also great at accommodating my dog's special needs. BONUS: she posts cute photos of her clients' fur-babies on Instagram. I love that they're often smiling! :)

Jonathan has been a great help to our family and our lovely Maltese, Fluffy. Before Jonathan became our dog walker, Fluffy was always hyperactive around the house. Now he enjoys his daily morning walks with Jonathan. Jonathan is trustworthy and reliable—I know that my Fluffy is safe while I’m working.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.
