I am fortunate to have found a dedicated and professional violin teacher for my two children. Miss Victoria has a great personality and is able to keep them focused and motivated. My daughter was especially taken immediately with her encouraging and supportive approach. Their hand position and technique are much improved since starting with Miss Victoria.
Michael is a great teacher and I look forward to my clarinet lessons each week. He is patient and explains the technical parts of playing very clearly. He gives good tips and teaches at an appropriate pace.
I've been taking saxophone lessons with Josh for about a month now and I've been very happy with the experience. I had never played before and Josh has been great about teaching me the basics at a good pace. He is very nice and professional. Definitely recommend!
Kazuko is wonderful and our flute lessons are now the highlight of my daughters week.
We have been students of the Piano Workshop for 7 years. Mark, the director, does a great job at matching students with teachers and is very accommodating to work with scheduling lessons especially with families that have very full schedules. We enjoy the recordings done at every recital and they make a good teaching tool as well. There are lots of teachers of various disciplines so students of all musical talents can benefit at the Piano Workshop. It's a professionally run outfit that I would recommend to all families.
Do not hesitate to work with Ken, he is a wonderful teacher! My 14-year old son has been taking alto sax lessons with Ken for over a year and will be entering high school in September. I can see Ken being a long-term fixture during my son's high school years. Ken is incredibly talented and loves to share his knowledge and experience with his students. He does it very well. He is VERY easy to work with and he has a great sense of humor, which my son loves. My son very much enjoys his lessons. In working with my son, Ken has upped my son's "game" in so many ways and I can't wait to see what the future holds musically for him. Ken came highly recommended to me and for good reason. He opens up new worlds and new doors for his students. He is very invested in his students' lessons and wants the best for them. If you have the opportunity to work with Ken, take it.
We contacted Aakash Mittal about clarinet lessons for our son after he gave a presentation at our son's 5th grade instrumental music class. Were very glad we did. Our son improved quickly during the three years he took lessons from Aakash. He received music awards at Centennial Middle School, twice auditioned into CU Boulders Middle School Honor Band, made first clarinet at CUs Middle School Band Camp, and auditioned into Boulder Highs Wind Ensemble. To cap his time with Aakash, he gave his own clarinet recital, including three duets with Aakash, as well as the 3rd movement of Mozarts Clarinet Concerto with piano accompaniment. More importantly, the process that led to these accomplishments was genuinely enjoyable. Our son started off with a half-hour lesson each week, and liked it so much that he quickly moved to an hour lesson. Aakash has an excellent teaching style. After our son played a piece, Aakash would ask what he thought went well, and what needed work. Aakash rarely had negative criticism and focused on what elements would improve a piece, and in getting students to honestly evaluate themselves. As our son gained skill and confidence, they got down to brass tacks more quicklybut still without him ever feeling guilty or chastised. Aakashs primary instrument is the saxophone, but he thoroughly understands the clarinet. Lessons included instrument-specific tasks like fine pitch control, breathing, alternate fingerings, tonguing, and embouchure, as well as broader topics of playing exact rhythm, tempo changes, pitch, dynamics, and phrasing. Most importantly, he understands that, as time-consuming as these components are, they are ultimately just technical elements. After our son mastered them for a hard piece, theyd then work on exploiting them to play music that swoops and soars and comes from the heart. And though Aakashs favorite style is pretty hyperactive jazz, he is comfortable with a wide range of musical styles. Our son played the MapleStory video game for years, and Aakash helped him learn transcriptions of several songs from the game. For one recital, our son found several Legend of Zelda transcriptionsevoking exclamations from other students like We can play game music for a recital? I didnt know that! As our sons taste gravitated toward classical music, Aakash was right there with him. Aakash was especially good at helping our son work on challenging pieces. Our son is always choosing music that seems a little (or sometimes, a lot) beyond his level. For example, the Mozart Clarinet Concerto is really a virtuoso recital piece. They took the 3rd movement one section at a time, sometimes playing very slowly to get the rhythms and notes right. Aakash had him try to play along with a full orchestra recording (where it was clear that playing at full tempo makes the piece exponentially more difficult.) Okay, that didnt work, so they concentrated on getting it right at a slightly more relaxed tempo. Eventually, we brought in a friend of Aakashs on piano, and the three of them worked on how to coordinate and figure out who was in charge of the rhythm. It made an exhilarating finale to our sons solo recital. Aside from his skills as a teacher, Aakash is also quite practical. He knew that his own concert schedule affected his teaching schedule, so was good about trying to make up missed classes during the week, and was flexible when our own schedule interfered with lessons. Were also impressed with his ambitionhe knows that great musicians dont sit around waiting to be discovered, but actively promote themselves and make things happen. We have seen him playing live with various people many times, and have enjoyed the variety of musical styles and partners. (Especially when he plays with electric violin. Hint, hint!) We enjoyed our three years with Aakash, and had mixed feelings about him leaving for Indiahappy for him, but sad that we were losing a great teacher. We can whole-heartedly recommend him for just about anything hes trying to do.
Laura has given me saxophone lessons for many years. I find her approach very helpful to me, and she also takes into consideration what I am working on. She gives me lessons on Skype or in person, and we play a lot during the lesson, utilizing the theme of the current lesson. For example, if I was working on a blues in every key, she would have me review the blues structure, then play the head and solo on it in a few keys. If she was demonstrating how to deal with two chord changes with common chord tones, she would have me play the tune with that in mind as I solo on it. Rhythmically we are working on Brazilian rhythms currently, so she is having me work on some bossas using the specific samba or bossa rhythm during my solo. I start with vocally doing the rhythm, and then do it on the sax using one note, and then do it with the chord scale, eventually doing a solo in the rhythm I am trying to master at the time.I take away a lot every time I have a lesson, and enjoy working on the assignments she gives me.
I am taking absolute beginner lessons, which includes the ability to read music. I am learning both the instrument and how to read music at the same time and am enjoying my lessons. Michele is very patient and I feel she got me started on the right track - as I didnt have any experience with music.
I think Julie is an awesome teacher. I'm in my 20's and was looking for someone to teach me the saxophone. I was a total beginner, and Julie was so patient from the beginning. During each lesson, Julie taught me new things while enforcing the ideas she taught the previous lessons so that I would work on perfecting one skill while learning a new one, which encouraged me to continue practicing and working on the skills. Overall, I think Julie is a wonderful amd talented teacher that really knows how to teach each student on their own level, and I'm so grateful to have taken lessons with her.
I enjoyed my lessons with Mr. Dreyer. He's an amazing teacher. He was very patient with me and taught me a lot of techniques. Can't wait for my next lesson!
As an adult student of the flute I cannot recommend Daniel’s teaching more. I have studied with him for just under two years and my progress on the flute has been amazing. Our lessons are focused and fun and because of his knowledge and expertise I feel confident he is guiding me in the right direction. Having his studio in mid-town Manhattan has also been a plus for me as it has been convenient from where I live. He is also a very talented musician! I highly recommend Daniel
My students learn about performing all styles of music as well as developing the ear and learning musicality. Most score highly in NYSMA competitions.
Jon is an AWESOME teacher!!! I can't believe how fast I am improving since starting lessons about 6 months ago. I got to a page in my book that I got stuck on with my old teacher. It took Jon 5 minutes to see what I was doing wrong, told me and then I could do it instantly! John is a really cool Australian who is always really nice and funny but he also holds me to high standards. I started saxophone two years ago for my middle school big band coz they needed anyone to fill the chair but now I practice every day or most of them anyway because I like it and want to be good for Jon. Jon is the man!
Mark has been providing piano lessons to my son (now 8) for over a year now. Mark is amazing, he is excellent with my son; patient, friendly, but a very strong teacher. We love to hear my son practice at home and are amazed at his advancement, we have recommended Mark to our friends who are very thankful to us and will continue to do so to anyone looking for a friendly, very accommodating, excellent musician to teach their young child the art and love of playing piano!

I began my first flute lessons a few months after I picked up the flute to join my hometown’s middle school band program. Now, over thirteen years later, I can reflect and appreciate that it was incredibly helpful and instrumental to my development to take flute lessons with a specialized teacher outside of the band room setting. I have been lucky to have taught both privately in Fairfield County, Connecticut and publicly in the Ithaca City School District as a music graduate of Ithaca College, and I am delighted to be offering lessons in the New York City area. I provide a tailored approach to each and every child, adolescent, and adult. Everyone's first lesson is free! To schedule your first lesson and to inquire about rates and lesson policies, please contact me.
