Being a first time puppy owner Suzanne taught me many great techniques while working with our puppy. She also gave me great feedback and advice on training our puppy. She showed me that with patience and constant practice our puppy's behavior will get better. Thank you for your knowledge.

We have had two training sessions with Ariana and our two four-month old Chow-Shepherd mixes, and we couldn't be happier with what she has taught the pups and us so far. The dogs adore her and respond well to her training techniques, and she clearly has a lot of in-depth knowledge and experience working with dogs and animals in general. I appreciate that she has a background in animal behavior, so she understands why they act the way they do and uses that to redirect their behavior. We look forward to many more sessions with her!

Our trainer , Caitlin was so impressive with her knowledge on dog psychology, she made us feel so comfortable, always being encouraging , positive and patient. We never felt judged in the least , she was so cool and down to earth, exactly what we needed , I would highly recommend them to anyone hesitating getting a trainer for fear of feeling judged, I'm so happy we made the commitment, it made a world of difference with basic obedience in our puppy and 6 yr old beagle loved it as well!

Jenn was wonderful! She's extremely knowledgeable in animal behavior & provides much love & care for your pets. Our dog & 2 cats were calm & relaxed when we got back from our 3 days away. You can tell they really enjoyed themselves & were not stressed, thanks to Jenn. We got pictures & updates daily of the gang, which we really appreciated. Plus, our place looked just the way we left it when we got back! We would love to use Jenn's professional services in the future. We were extremely happy with Jenn's care! Thank you, Jenn!

Rick and his team were great. They took our 10 year old dog with some aggressive and defiant behavior for a week and worked with him. We then had Rixk come and train us so that we could help modify his behavior. It is a difficult process but Rick used clear and easy commands to help us learn. Rick was also willing to answer questions in between sesssions and always got back to us quickly.

Alcie Marino is a true professional when it comes to understanding the canine world. Her techniques and strategies for training your pooch are terrific. I have two large dogs who were trained by Alice. They were extremely destructive and did not understand who was the boss. Through my training sessions with Alice, they are two of the most wonderful, well-behaved dogs. They are easy to walk and do not destroy anything in our home. In addition, Alice works with your entire family to ensure that your all in the household are aware of the expected behavior of your dog. She truly is amazing and I would highly recommend her services!

We have used Margaret to help acclimate our new rescue pup into our home with our six year old Shih Tzu who is the Queen. From the first visit she offered practical tips on managing the pups behavior. There are four adults living in our house and she was keenly aware of how that might impact the consistency of what we did with our new puppy. Each week she would visit with all four of us and made us feel more comfortable with what we were doing and we could see the progress. It was more like Margaret was at the house visiting and in more of a conversation provided us excellent guidance and feedback and answered all our questions. It never felt that we were at a lesson. She has regular as well as four-legged people skills. We would enthusiastically recommend her!

Joshua was amazing with my families two dogs. He genuinely cares about the dogs he works with and is great with them. Our puppy is doing so much better and has come such a long way thanks to him. Even after the training sessions were complete Joshua was still there months later to help me with any questions or concerns that I had. Would recommend Backcountry K-9 to everyone who is looking for a very experienced and caring trainer. Thank you!

Kristin is a dedicated professional. She spent over two hours with us in our home on our first visit with her. She spent time videotaping our dog's behavior and demonstrated several behavior modification techniques for us to practice until our next session. She has kept in constant contact with us post-visit and has been there to answer questions and provide feedback. Our dog has separation anxiety which is going to require a long term plan and I believe that Kristin is definitely going to be a part of the team along with our behavior veterinarian. I would recommend Kristin.

We are so happy to have met Debbie! She is an absolute pleasure. She helped me and my fiancee learn how to be the best owners to our new puppy Bodie. She truly cares for each animal she works with and wants the best for both owner and dog. Being a pretty anxious person, Debbie was so patient and helpful. She never left without us fully understanding what is expected and always made sure we could do it on our own. She is a fabulous trainer and person. She even gave us great tips for healthy homemade treats for our dog. I would recommend her 1000 times over to anyone who is looking for help with their dog, new or old.

Gus is very professional and knowledgeable about dog psychology and is great in explaining dog behavior. We consulted with him to try to figure out the causes of our dog's aggressive behavior towards other dogs and the best ways of dealing with it. Gus was able to pinpoint the issue right away and gave us some hands on tips that we are going to use going forward. I would highly recommend him as a trainer.

My dog training session with Faryn was impressive and her professional way of teaching is definitely 100% outstanding. Faryn provided helpful tips to improve my dog’s response when giving certain commands. When I first adopted my dog, one of the many challenging obstacles I came across was the constant pulling on the leash my dog will do. Before meeting with Faryn I was contemplating on how to improve my walks with my dog, WOW was that difficult and annoying. However, after the first training session with Faryn, my dog no longer pulls on the leash as much as before. In fact, these last couple of days I enjoy my long walks at the park with my dog. Thank You Faryn,

Michelle was so professional and friendly. She explained how each day would be structured for my dog and sent me videos of him following commands. There is a considerable improvement after one week. Our shiba Inu is quite stubborn but Michelle has got rid of some of his bad behaviors. I have already booked my dog in for a two week stay next year when I am away overseas. I would highly recommend Michelle!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
