Introduction: **NOW OFFERING DISCOUNTED REMOTE LESSONS. PLEASE MESSAGE FOR DETAILS** My teaching methods are tailored to the specific needs of each student. I believe in learning the basics of proper technique and music theory but I give my students the option to make their own path. I like to let my students lead the lesson with questions, curiosities, and whatever interests them at the moment. Based on their interests, I employ a variety of useful exercises, written and recorded tools, and 20 years of music experience to help them achieve their goals. Anyone is capable of playing an instrument, regardless of perceived talent or instincts. I love opening the door to new possibilities and demystifying the "secrets" of great musicianship. HINT: It's all about PRACTICE!

Jack is a great teacher. He has quickly gauged my experience level and created lessons that are easy to understand and help bring me to the next level of my bass playing. I'm already seeing improvements in every area: scales, theory, song development, dexterity, and I am having a great time learning! Highly recommend Jack! Totally great!

Bass Guitar Lessons (for adults)

I had SOME prior guitar experience, so Jackson adjusted quickly to what I knew... He made me do these small changes to my fingering (although uncomfortable at first) that eventually turned out to be great tips to help me play more complex songs. We love the same style of music as well which is great because the songs that he writes tabs for are always enjoyable to listen to and learn.

I've been getting lessons from Jack for over a year, and he's been great. I started as a beginner on the upright, and he's been very good at teaching me both technique and actual music. Plus he's a friendly guy and is always flexible with my schedule. Highly recommended!

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

My first order of business is getting to know my student. I tailor every lesson plan to the interests and individual goals of my students so being in tune with what they're listening to, playing along with, and inspired by is very important. Next, I get to work figuring out how to better their skills through useful exercises and advice. That could involve a range of activities, including music theory lessons, technical exercises, rote memorization, ear training, play-a-longs, or just meaningful discussions. It's important to set out short term and long term goals early on, so I like to spend some time discussing weekly assignments as well as long term plans.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied music at Oberlin Conservatory and UNC-Chapel Hill. I have a Bachelor's of Music from Oberlin Conservatory with a concentration in Jazz Studies and Double Bass. While at UNC-Chapel Hill I studied music performance, theory, and history. I've studied bass with Peter Dominguez (Oberlin Conservatory), John V. Brown (UNC-CH, Duke University), Robert K. Anderson (North Carolina Symphony, UNC-CH) and Jon Heames.
