Nick was fantastic - great DJ...will definitely hire again!! Even though he was hired for a Sweet 16, he would be fabulous for a wedding, as well! Loved Gary, the photographer, (photo booth). Did a great job....gave out prints to the kids during the party and then received a flash drive with all the pictures when we were leaving.

Just for background information, I took lessons with Christine for about 4 years throughout high school with a focus in classical voice. I currently still study voice in college and I can honestly say I have the most helpful foundation I could have ever asked for for that. Christine instills a very strong vocal foundation both artistically and technically. She doesn't dumb anything down, but is absolutely understandable even for beginners. She is also incredibly knowledgeable as a musician, which is enormously helpful because with each new piece she adds to your repertoire, she also builds theoretical and artistic knowledge which helps you be able to perform other pieces later on. So I went into a lot of later repertoire having a solid understanding of the purpose and context of the music I was singing. Also, she never loses sight of the artistic aspects of singing, never letting pronunciation, oddly placed breaths, facial expressions, body language, misunderstanding of text, etc, slide. This seems kind of standard, but it's actually a really professional way of treating your students and made me personally, approach my music with as much professionalism as I had developed. I also found it extremely helpful that she explained why she did asked me to do certain things or ignore other things because, especially for beginners, classical training can seem like a black box and occasionally feels like it's taking you backwards. Having those explanations assuaged a lot of that fear. In my experience, I felt a lot of changes both explicitly and implicitly. I felt my voice grow, in range and strength, and my technical foundation and knowledge are both fairly solid. I stopped fidgeting and found a tremendously improved focus and composure while performing (a big problem for me). My Italian pronunciation is actually quite good now. My ear and internal tempo are both MUCH better. My theoretical knowledge is a lot more in depth than it was, (kind of a bonus because that's not her job). And my contextual knowledge of music is also at a much higher level than it would have been otherwise. Overall, Christine is a really talented teacher and musician who provides a lot of understandable but high level information, impeccable and PRECISE technique, and an artistic but academic approach to music and singing which lays a perfect philosophy in her students for continuing to grow as musicians.

I've played with Jimi since the first time I picked up the instrument (bass for 11 years). Lessons with him enabled me to play in big bands and small ensembles at the college level, as well as have a steady stream of gigs when I was in school. His method of teaching is sadly growing rarer and rarer in private lesson study. Rather than mandate to the student rote musical examples which are a.) boring and b.) relate nothing about learning actual music, Jimi's approach is a holistic one that has faith in pupil's drive and intelligence. He demonstrates aspects of music theory fundamentals, and then has the student utilize the formulas he has imparted to extrapolate the rest, with his guidance of course. If the student has trouble, Jimi instructs to fill in the gaps but never spoon feeds. This method insures the student actually learns and internalizes the information, rather than becomes an automaton. Moreover, Jimi encourages the students to bring in pieces that they actually like to play! So instead of spending months hammering out a highly diluted version of a Bach morning song, the student can bring in pieces by Zep, the Strokes, the Black Keys, Rihanna, whatever! Jimi then instructs through elucidating the music theory fundamentals within the songs that drew the student to the instrument in the first place! Jimi is professional, yet laid back. I have continued my friendship with him after studying and going on to professional life. He's just a good dude to know. Lastly, and this should be the last thing you consider. Jimi's rates are always reasonable. For private study in college, I paid 3-4 times as much for a lesson as what I paid when taking a lesson with Jimi. I hope you Long Islander aspiring musicians realize what a gem you have there.

My husband James and I had the privilege of having Spencer and Sequoia perform at our wedding at a winery in Virginia this summer. It would be a huge understatement to say we were SO pleased with how everything went!!! Spencer and Sequoia were amazingly professional and joyful to work with and super gracious with everything. It was the first time I had worked with a band of any kind so from the second we signed a contract, they were extremely responsive of our needs and questions, provided a very lengthy and diverse song list and even said they would be willing to learn song requests for a nominal fee. Because they're based out of New York, they had to make the long drive the morning of and were totally on board to work with our tomeline and the venue set up. They were also super self sufficient so we didn't have to worry about providing them equipment as they assured us they had everything they needed and required little set up time which proved to be true. We had them perform during our ceremony, cocktail hour AND reception but they did it like champs and our guests could not stop raving about how great they sounded! Not only were they just downright talented, they were a pleasure to have around as well. At one point, my nephew who sung a song for us was experiencing technical difficulties with his sound system so Spencer right away let him use his, which was a total lifesaver. Bottom line- customer service is beyond amazing with this lovely husband wife pair and we are so happy and grateful we could have them be a part of our special day. THANK YOU Spencer & Sequoia!

I looooove Soulful Sounds! They are my favorite band. They played at my wedding in August 2015. I'm so glad I gave them a chance. Besides picking my dress they were the best decision for my wedding. People still talk about how great the band was. My only regret was that I didn't have them play the whole night. The guys are so prefessional and they dress for the job. I highly recommend them to everyone I know. I can't wait for my next event to have Soulful Sounds play. Keep up the good work guys. I feel like they get better every time I hear them. Love Vicky

Marla Mase is an extraordinary event planner, creator of party magic and Producer! After having been in the business for a couple of decades and working in so many different venues, types of events, parties and performances, Marla has an incredible team. She’s amassed a phenomenal, devoted group of performers, artists, designers & caterers whom she employs at all her parties, depending on need and skill set. I have worked with Marla on several creative projects and events and had a ball working with her. She is the ultimate professional, but always works in a relaxed, easygoing fashion. She is open to discussion and will always brainstorm to bring ones vision to life. Recently she produced a Rock show and party in Tribeca for me that hosted an amazing band, along with several international actors, dancers and singers. Marla hired one of her designers to transform the old Tribeca firehouse into an underworld of sea creatures and magic. It was spectacular. The food was a beautifully abundant array of hors devours and beverages. Hailing from Tribeca and having worked in the New York area for so many years for hundreds of high-end clients, Marla is truly cutting edge. She has an eye for the unique, and is able to adapt to the vision of her client. Marla really gets the job done. She’s personable and lovely and I always feel I’m in good hands with her at the helm.

Mark Weisman has been my son's piano teacher since he was 11 years old. Alex is now a proficient pianist at age 21. Under the tutelage of Mark, my son advanced from a music student to a true musician. Mark is an engaging teacher who introduces his students to a variety of music genres, keeping classical, standards and popular music all part of the student's repertoire. My son Alex's interest in music was spurred on by Mark's enthusiasm and style of teaching. The Music Workshop conducts annual performances for parents and friends so we can see the progress our children have made. My son is now in college and still studies with Mark on breaks and in the summer. Alex belongs to The Jazz Band at Loyola University as well as his own band. He has played professionally for cocktail hours and theater productions. Mark has inspired Alex to continue his music into his adulthood. Mark Weisman is an exemplary teacher and person.

My experience with Yuto, I could say, was life-changing. The amount of not only knowledge, but really feeling of what Jazz and music in general can be, was endless. Yuto treats you as a real friend, and his lessons are both very practical, but also with a theoretical foundation that really provides a real sense of what you are playing or composing. Also, Yuto, above all, is a great human being, with a big heart and passion for music. We ended up recording some things at his studio and continue to be good friends. I will always thank him and consider him to be one of the best musicians I´ve played with and hope to play again soon with him. To anyone that is looking for lessons on Jazz, or classical or any kind of music. I could, with all sincerety say, Yuto is the one for you. -Diego D.

Thank you, Jonathan to you and your guys for playing such a good music with exceptional quality. All guests (young and older ones) gave me very good comments about the performance. We all enjoyed the selection of songs, the quality of play as well as the fact that all guests could sing and play together with the band. Also, appreciate your guys help with the little hiccup on the event schedule we had and adjusting yourself to our needs! Thank you again for the unforgettable night!

I came to Sarah with a goal of wanting to accompany myself as a singer, instead of having to rely on a guitarist or a band. In less than a year I played my first solo show. Sarah has prepared me to play solo, with a band, how to rearrange songs, how to read sheet music and so much more. Every lesson I learn something different. She’s made learning piano fun and interesting. Sarah is very patient, kind and extremely talented. I’d never go anywhere else!

Helene was my piano teacher from kindergarten through high school. She taught me how to read, understand, play and love music. Furthermore, my early -and in-depth- start with piano prepared me for years of trumpet in various advanced bands. Although I am not currently taking lessons, I still sit down to play piano whenever I get the chance. I'll play anything from Bach to Beethoven to Josh Groban to new and classic Disney - really anything I'm in the mood for. Helene's teaching has made me proficient enough in piano and music in general such that I can truly enjoy playing. Thanks Helene!!

Before Steve moved to NYC, I had close to a dozen guitar lessons with him. At age 72, I decided to supplement my love for singing with knowing how to play the guitar. I have been successful learning. Steve's expertise served as a catalyst for me to "move out of my comfort zone." I've played at least 10 open mic nights and felt relatively successful singing and playing simultaneously. I've formed a band at the Georgetown, MA. VFW Post 7608. (see photo included). I'm the chap with the white hat on the right. I enthusiastically endorse Steve Lacey.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
