We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

Jerome removed caulk from our bathtub and re-caulked. He added clear silicone around the faucet fixtures. He did an outstanding job, he did it quickly and efficiently, and he cleaned up after his work. Highly recommended.

The Tech from Service Guys arrived at our home early on a Saturday morning, just as we had requested. He explained how he would make the repairs and got to work right away. We were disappointed with the resealing of a sink drain. The finished project looked sloppy and messy. We could have done that ourselves, but we hired a professional thinking he would do a better job than us. The other projects (fixing a broken kitchen drawer, installing a drawer pull, and hanging two kitchen shelves) were done quickly and to our satisfaction. We only wish the resealed drain was cleaner, but otherwise we are glad we hired the Service Guys.

Hired Walter to check out a clogged toilet drain. Turned out it was a broken main sewer line which he was also able to repair. I liked how he is very systematic in his approach to identify the problem and his philosophy to only fix what is broken. Also explains and communicates well and works with you. Since he can do a lot of very different tasks, I am sure I will hire him in the future and can also recommend him to everybody.

My toilet was backed up and overflowed. Plumber Rob was great. He was neat, professional and courteous. I checked with 3 or 4 other company's before contacting BlueKrait drain cleaning and they had the best prices. As a woman I felt safe to have Rob in my home doing the work. He was neat and cleaned up after himself. I would definitely recommend BlueKrait service.

This was the SECOND time we have used Ivan for hanging up our two TVs ( a 65in and a 42in) because we moved. He always does an amazing job! Punctual, amazing price, and professional quality job! He came over and was done in like 1 hr and both TVs are hung, and he cleaned up any mess afterwards. Highly recommend him for his value and professional, outstanding service!

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

He arrived on time as scheduled and went straight to work immediately. He fixed a clogged drain for me but had to replace damaged pipes before he completed the job. He walked with me to the hardware store to ensure I purchased the right materials. He was very professional and appropriate at all times. He removed sliding shower doors and the frame, he cleaned up after he finished working and did not leave any mess. I would definitely recommend him for any plumbing and/or electrical job! His prices are also very competitive!

William replaced water shut-off valves for sink and dishwasher. While testing the water lines, he discovered leaks caused by a contractor's incomplete installation of drain pipes and faucet. William properly installed these items and prevented water damage to new cabinets. He also replaced leaky bathroom sink pipe connectors. Excellent work, fast completion time, and fair prices. I highly recommend his plumbing services. Thanks Thumbtack.com!

Hired Gjo to fix the leaking faucet, missing drain stopper, loose toilet and worn drainage pipe. They are very attentive to details. The job was beautifully done. They are willing to communicate and ask and confirm everything before they work on it. The price is good. Willing to hire them again for future plumbing work.

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

I couldn't figure out why I could get the lever to flush the toilet. Jason came and figured it out immediately and volunteered to walk to Home Depot to get the parts that were needed. A part in the level had broken. So he walked the 20 blocks to get the part and fixed it. I am very grateful to him. He literally went the extra mile for the job. He was very nice as a person and had made a career out of toilet and faucet repair, so he is very knowledgeable. I would hire him again and I would immediately recommend him to a friend.

Very Efficient team and super quick. I had the chance to have Steve and his helper who happened to be quick and clean who fixed my drain. One thing i have never seen before is plumbers wearing shoe covers. Well they DID. I found that to be really respectful. Highly recommended!

We had a very good experience with R&R Plumbing. We had issues with a leak at the bathtub. Though it was not time critical, we got a quick appointment and the leak was fixed very quickly. They were accommodating of our schedule. They had to open the basement ceiling to fix the issue and later closed it and covered the area as well. Soon after this was fixed, we had another issue- a drain was clogged, for which we called them again. Although it was the weekend, Rezart sent his personnel and looked at the issue and it was fixed the next day. Overall, we had a very good experience with R&R plumbing. They are customer focused and the job was neatly executed. We would highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
