(+) Suki fulfilled the expected tasks of a cat sitter -- providing food, filling the water bowl, and scooping the litter box. She sent daily photos. She was pretty quick to responding to my texts. Suki's rate/cost is affordable compared to other cat sitters, especially professionals (-) Although she sent daily photos, they were sometimes just blurry snaps of my cat's back. From the photos alone, it did not seem that Suki spent much time with him. Rather felt like she was merely showing me that she "checked in" to see my cat. I was disappointed to return home and see that the curtains were down when she said that she will make sure they are up.

Jen and her associates truly love pets. So many of the pet-sitters are solely focused on dogs. These guys really know and like cats, too. And my cats like them back.

My husband and I cannot express the joy we feel having Lynne be with her baby girl Lucy during the week when we cannot. She keeps us posted via text with pictures of Lucy during her walk and when she returns home. Recently relocating from Wisconsin to New Jersey and having to replace our dog sitter with lynne has been a wonderful experience for both of us and for Lucy.

I have only used Sarah once so far but will not hesitate to again. I moved into a new City and immediately needed to be out of town and have someone lined up to take care of my dog. It could not have been more chaotic with the move, a Holiday, and the last minute request and Sarah was incredibly accommodating for the whole experience. When I arrived home my dog was happy and clearly well taken care of. I will absolutely be calling her again in the future.

Bruce worked with our dog for one session and we found him very supportive, knowledgeable and evidence-based. He spent time with our ten month old and focused on observing his behaviour and gave us great tips to make our relationship with him more productive. I really appreciated that he followed up very sincerely on our situation and his positive attitude.

I just started using Celina's cleaning services and have been extremely pleased with her work ethic. She is thorough with her cleaning and fast. I initially wanted a dog walker and a coworker suggested that I find a cleaning service that doesn't mind letting out the dog. Celina doesn't mind letting out the dog before and after she cleans. She's extremely professional, trustworthy and flexible with her time. I would recommend her services.

Because my dog is old and gets sick with the kennel cough shot, I had not been able to get her groomed. When I found Ray & Fay who will come to your house. My dog was so matted and overgrown hair. They did a wonderful job. Fay was so good with my dog, who hates grooming. She did as good a job as any groomer to whom I've taken my dog. It was an excellent experience

I have known Kate since 2006 when I hired her to take care of my dogs while living for a year in New York City. I chose Kate from several people listing dog care services on Craig’s List because, of all the ones I interviewed, I found her to be the most professional and conscientious, offering to meet the dogs and myself before the job began. As a pet sitter I found Kate to be competent, reliable, and proactive in addressing any problems that might arise but, above all, Kate is a caring, compassionate individual who genuinely takes an interest in the happiness and well being of her furry charges. Over the years, what began as a professional relationship became a friendship. I have never had any qualms leaving her with my pets in my home or entrusting her with their care. She has been to my home many times since we both returned to Michigan not only as a dog sitter and friend but also to help with catering and serving at parties. Kate also helped with dog walking and meal preparation the summer I was receiving chemo so I can recommend not only her culinary and animal skills but her people care skills as well. I hope you will consider Kate for whatever purpose she has chosen to give you this letter of recommendation. She will not only do her best for you, she will exceed your expectations.

Barkstown made my lifelong dream of visiting NYC come true. I was able to relax and take my time touring knowing that my dog had a reliable dog walker. Chris was able to accommodate changes in our schedule important on a trip this big. We needed walks 2xday since our dog is only used to a dog door. I asked if Chris would call after each walk since this was the first time our Coton had a dog walker. turns out we not only got those phone calls but text pictures too !! Barkstown is everything you could ever need in a pet service. Be assured, choosing Barkstown is exactly what your pet needs.

Katy is a reliable, trustworthy and loving cat-sitter. I trust Katy completely to care for, feed and medicate our 16 year old cat. For many years Katy has taken care of him for us over long weekends to up to 3 weeks while we've been away overseas. She has always been there for us even when we've made last minute plans and over holidays. Our cat's special needs require being fed 2-3 times a day from a variety of foods which include frozen rabbit and/or chicken that needs to be defrosted ahead of time, cleaning his box every day while keeping a watchful eye he isn't blocked, and administering 2-3 medications up to twice a day. Katy goes above and beyond and truly does an amazing job, and she does so with love! Our cat does not like many people yet he has fallen in love with Katy and now runs to greet her at the door! I would absolutely recommend Katy to care for your cat if you are looking for someone who is responsible and caring too.

SixLegs has really been a day to day life changer for our household of three dogs.I was relieved to know our building had a pet perk. SixLegs was their pet consierge service so having their trust in their company was very helpful in taking that stress off our shoulders to find a sitter. The app has made scheduling, communication, and up to date tracking so useful to us. We go away for days at a time so their commitment to our three boys has certainly shown. The boys are always happy when I check our cameras within the apartment and they are constantly playing with the sitter so when we get home it’s as if we never left. They stay happy at all times and that is what makes SixLegs invaluable to us.

Linda spent 2 weeks caring for our aged quiet, shy cat. We returned home to find cat and home in better shape than when we left. Linda gave us daily updates and pictures, spent quality time with our cat, and was extremely reliable and caring. Everything she said she would provide was done beautifully making our trip away perfect and stress free. Highly recommend Linda.

Betty's my go-to dog sitter!! I would recommend her to everyone! She helped me with my two poodles for a weekend and often walks them for me while I am away. My dogs adore her so much and are always relaxed and happy around her (to the point I think they prefer her more than me sometimes). She even brought my attention to subtle, twitchy leg movement that my older poodle was making during a walk with Betty- which helped me get appropriate treatment for her from vet. Betty makes my dogs feel comfortable- Most importantly, she treats them as if they are her own- She's a true animal lover-!

I needed pet-sitting for 2 cats while out of town - I had a bad experience with a prior cat-sitter but Ana was great to work with. When I came home, the cats were happy & fed, there was clean water available & the litter was clean. I will definitely use this service again for my next trip!

Carol has taken care of my dog Peetie twice now, once over Christmas and once this weekend. Both times I've come home to a very happy dog! She takes the time to email me pictures so I can see how he's doing and she's very communicative which makes going away a lot easier. Carol has stayed with him in my home both times and I've come back to a clean house and everything just as I left it. She's staying with him again in February and I feel lucky to have found someone who is so great with my dog and genuinely spending time with him.

Annie took care of our cat, Federico, an aquarium, and a slew of houseplants while we were out of the country for a week and a half, and it was a wonderful experience. She was conscientious and lovely, easy to communicate with while we were away, and enthusiastic about providing kindness and care to our pets. She has a genuine affection for animals, and understands the intricacies of taking care of them. When we returned home from the trip, the house was in order and all of our creatures were happy! Annie made us feel comfortable being away from our home for so long, and we will definitely seek her service again in the future.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

      • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
      • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
        • 45-minute visit: $28.
        • 60-minute visit: $32.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
        • 12 hours: $100.
        • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
