Everything was great from booking to after the move. There was just some miscommunication between the office and their movers that came. I told Simply Moving & Storage about having 1 flight of stairs at my apartment that we were moving from. I then confirmed that they knew about it again via email response to their confirmation of the move email. Once the movers arrived, one of the first words out of his mouth was about how he didn't know there would be stairs and that it was not on the paperwork and that the price would go up. We settled it there when I showed him the email and he still tried to fight it...he was just looking for some extra cash, can't blame him right? LOL That was the only issue, and I handled it in my own way but other than that they were great.

We needed to have some things moved from our house to a storage unit in the area. they arrived about 40 minutes early which was a little inconvenient (we were in the middle of a moving sale) but they were polite, professional, and worked with us - and around our yard sale and got all of our items safely moved into the storage unit. I'd recommend them to anyone who has a van-sized move. their fan held a LOT!

Moving is always a stressful experience. Especially when it's a long distance move from Connecticut to Ohio. There never seems to be enough time to prepare. I hired Movers-For-A-Cause. It was the best decision I could have made. Reggie kept in regular contact for the two weeks prior to the move date for confirmations. My move was especially tricky because I also had a loaded 10x14 storage unit about 40 minutes away absolutely filled to the brim with boxes. He came to the apartment a week before the move date to survey the premises. He was able to give me an extremely accurate price based on what he visually saw, as well as the description of the full storage unit. When moving day arrived, we arranged to meet at the storage facility to load the boxes first. He was right on time. He and his team took on an unexpected laborious task because over time boxes had tilted, fallen, caved in, and some needed to be re-boxed. I left to return to the apartment and finalize the remainder of the move. Reggie's men completely took care of the storage unit and called me when they were on their way to my home. The procession was steady and professional. In and out. The apartment emptied and Movers-For-A-Cause were on their way. We arranged a satisfactory window of time for the next day's arrival to allow for hotel sleep time. For me, the drive was long and tedious, but I was completely relaxed based on the arrangement we had. The next day we had a couple of follow-up phone calls and, just as planned, they arrived at the new place. They unloaded everything very carefully into the new apartment and unloaded all the storage boxes into my garage. It was finally over. When I moved from New York to Maine, the experience was a nightmare. The movers were unprofessional and did not uphold the original price. Reggie's price was exact without even a slight variance. Plus the service was as professional as one could hope for. I've already let them know that if I ever need to move from Ohio back to Connecticut or the surrounding area, they will definitely be the ones I call. ***** FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY *****

I couldnt have asked for a better service. I booked my move pretty much last minute, we moved in to storage with Kobe and his crew. I found out about Great Movers through thumbtack and I thought this is just hoax. Movers NYC were so expensive but this company turned out the most affordable and clear in prices. My movers bailed out on me because of some unbelievable reason. We scheduled the move with a very small and easy to book process. My move was seamless. I was not prepared at all. Movers packed my belongings into boxes and were kind enough to help me take down ac and TV. but a note: they will not install the tv and AC after the move in to a new move because of safety reasons, which totally makes sense. We were packed up in no time. I moved from a studio to a studio so it was a fairly quick move. throughout the move, the crew kept asking me about which items to be moved and which were to be taken to storage. My move was divided into 2 parts. I moved from Bushwick to Parkslope and then some of my stuff went to storage at Varick Street.

The owner of Fair Price Movers, David, contacted me right away after my post about help with moving from my storage unit to my new apartment. David is very professional, reliable, and trustworthy business owner. I have experienced not the best service from a previous company I hired and now that I found Fair Price Movers I will recommend them to all my family and friends. On the day of the move; Aaron, Jose, and Luis came to our rescue for a fast and efficent move. All 3 are very hard working men, I'm sure Mr. David Wright is very happy to know how professional his crew is. Thank you so much guys!!

I hired CCS Moving to move my stuff from Downtown Manhattan to Jersey City!! The men were really good and worked very hard. It is easy to find bad things to say when you hire a moving company. But all around CCS Moving & Storage was professional throughout my moving process. The movers were all very experienced. They were no glitches anywhere, when they delivered my stuff. I just wanted also to thank the sales representative for giving me a right quote. I would definitely use them again and will recommend them to my friends!! Very pleasant experience!!

I appreciate their fees were upfront, no surprises (like other movers). They had several people on their team, so the furniture was moved very quickly from Hoboken to storage units.

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

Ron worked with me on two different heavy furniture/appliance moves. Both times he was professional, on time, and VERY efficient. He is super strong! The man knows how to move! The bonus is that he is an all round great guy. I also had the pleasure to work with Ron and his team of Rock & Elvis for a complete move from a 750 sq. ft. apartment to a 350 sq. ft. micro apartment. This included 1 move to the new place & 1 move to a storage facility. It was a super hot day--85* to 90*. These guys busted their butts. They wasted no time getting right to work and continued to work hard straight through the entire 6 hours of the move. Very efficient. They know how to work as a team and how to load a truck to maximize the space. A move can be very stressful, but Ron is a calming influence. His team is the same. We actually had some good laughs during the move. He truly is a moving professional. You can not go wrong hiring him. Thanks Ron for the amazing job. You made everything work so snoothly!

I was worried to hire movers as always, but after conversation over the phone whith Stefan my concerns disappeared. He sounds reliable and knowledgeable. He recommends professional crew: 4 men and a truck and gave me reasonable estimate. Movers were Fantastic, they packed my furniture, disassembled my bed and by suggestion of crew lead I decided to protect some of my valuable furniture in double plastic as a protection against humidity and mold, because I'm planned to keep my stuff in storage for a few months. To move out of the storage I will definitely call to Ample Moving and I hope Stefan will accommodate my relocation again!!!

I will highly recommend Jose and his crew and they were fast and finished everything in less than 6 hours (2BR plus storage move from White plains to Eastchester).

3 Brothers were the most responsive of all the companies I contacted. Moving is stressful enough & they made it so easy to get through. I had to move in to storage for awhile and they were so helpful in planning & making suggestions for things I had not thought about. When my apartment is ready 3 Brothers will be my first call to move me in to my home!! Professional & just the nicest guys!

When I hired Will, I thought we were doing a simple move of a treadmill to return it to a store, but we soon realized that the equipment I was moving had to be dismantled. Not only did he patiently and persistently resolve each issue along the way, but he even unjammed a drawer that had been stuck for months, he offered moral support as I anticipated hassle at the store, he was totally pleasant, and drove me back to my apartment. A great experience... he was careful and thoughtful about each step...I felt i was in goods hands the whole time!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
