F A B U L O U S ! Just had Arlington Highschool Reunion ( 30th ) I called Nick 5 days before our reunion and was booked by the end of the night. The gentlemen were awesome. The photobooth was non-stop for 4 hours. My crazy classmates couldn't get enough. Joe the photographer was perfect. I will never use anyone else. Quick response, courteous, explained everything and these to young gentlemen had to deal with our 100 49 year olds !!! Thank you so much guys..

Christine is a truly phenomenal teacher. If you have any hesitations about starting voice lessons because you are afraid of singing in front of other people, have no fear! Christine made me feel completely comfortable from the very first minute of our first lesson together. She is classically trained and extremely knowledgable about singing. I would recommend beginning lessons with her to get a solid technical foundation even if you eventually want to sing pop or R&B (i.e. she is not just for classical/opera singers!) That being said, I've met several of her other students and heard them sing and some are very serious students of the craft; she is an excellent teacher for experienced singers as well. During lessons, she plays her (baby?) grand piano in a large private area of her home. The walls in the singing area are filled with books of sheet music, but she also happily found specific songs online for me to work on when she didn't have the music already. She has an incredible ear- she truly listens to you and can pinpoint and explain to you exactly what to change (your posture or breathing, enunciation etc.) to instantly improve your tone and pitch. Improving your voice is a long process, and there are no magical tricks (except practice practice practice!). But with Christine as your guide, you will see improvement and most importantly, you will gain confidence. She truly believes in her students, which helps them believe in themselves too.

I feel very fortunate that I had the opportunity to study with Ben Paterson. Ben is a master musician on both the piano and the organ, and he has a great understanding of the history and language of jazz, blues and R&B music. He is a fantastic teacher, and he is able to clearly explain technical and theoretical concepts in a very clear manner. I am a full-time professional musician and bandleader, and I had some very specific questions and problems that Ben was able to help me with. I highly recommend studying with Ben, and look forward to more lessons with him myself.

I have played with Zerlina plenty of gigs through the past four years (ranging from Straight ahead Jazz to Funk and R&B) and can easily say that she is one of my favorite musicians to play with. She is delivers in a professional manor, regardless of the setting.

I saw DJ A at a private party recently. I was impressed by his music collection which had the crowd dancing all night. He played R&B, Hip Hop, House Music, Latin, Reggae/Reggaeton, Calypso, and Soca. He also had all the party favorite line dances. The added bonus was the videos to accompany the music, which was blended right along with his mixing. It gave a club feel even at a private party. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a DJ for any type of event.

I found Dave Bywater on GigMasters last year and after reading all of the rave reviews, I knew we had to have him for our September 4th Wedding. I can't really express in words how amazing he was. Days after our wedding we were still receiving calls from our guests telling us how amazing our DJ was. He was SO much fun! He really got the crowd going and he brought all kinds of props which was awesome!! All of the kids and adults loved him. Truly, SO MUCH FUN and he really made our reception memorable and a total blast. Absolutely without a doubt will RAVE about him to all of my friends for years to come and would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone for any type of event. " - Erica B.

Quartet plus 1 is an awesome group to work with. They are very professional, organized, and know how to make an event planning process enjoyable. My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Quartet Plus 1 for our wedding day in Central Park. They elegantly performed the various music genres we wanted, such as R&B, classical and Jazz. They did such a wonderful job and made our wedding day feel classy.

I had the opportunity to take piano lessons with Joseph in 2014, and could not have asked for a more competent or accommodating instructor. Joseph is an accomplished teacher, composer, arranger, and accompanist across a variety of styles and genres, and was able to craft lessons that met my diverse personal goals (which for me were a combination of learning classical piano technique, R&B/pop arrangements and basic music theory). He made my goals feel attainable and gave me practical tools to work towards them. Joseph was INCREDIBLY patient and lessons felt efficient and FUN! I would HIGHLY recommend Joseph to musicians of any level looking to broaden their theory knowledge, polish original compositions, or sharpen their piano skills in any style. Joseph is amazing!

Sol is the really the best you can get; not only is she an attentive vocal instructor, she's a professional ARTIST. She was able to really figure out my weaknesses, which really allowed me to zero-in to truly improve as a singer. She has a knack of explaining things that makes it easy for the student to understand and apply. No doubt one of the best decisions I've made thus far in my musical career!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
