I live in a duplex apartment that has not been updated in 20 years! I am a single mother and know nothing about renovations. I interviewed a few handymen and when I met Pete, I knew he was the one for the job. He didn’t try to take advantage of me and was very reasonable. He was such an amazing help to me that I couldn’t believe I got so lucky. He was fantastic in taking my ideas and making them come true. I ended up redoing every room in my apartment including the bathroom. Pete even took me to Home Depot and the paint store so I can pick up supplies. He saved me a lot of money with his expertise in the products that I needed. He was always on time, a great communicator, extremely easygoing, trustworthy, respectful and always responded via text or a phone call when I needed him. He is an amazing guy! My son and I actually were joking that we were going to miss him when he was finished…. And we do! I will be hiring him again to hang an oversized picture above a staircase soon. I have run a business in Union, NJ for over 20 years, www.Njvision.com. I know how important reviews are for good hard working people and also as a customer. If you would like to reach out to me with any questions about Pete’s work, feel free to email me (Tuli Santiago) at my website. I am difficult to please….Do yourself a favor and stop looking. YOU FOUND HIM! Pete, thank you so much for all your hard work. Here is a picture of the living room floor. LOVE IT!!!!

James remodeled the kitchen, flooring and interior painting. His knowledge and professionalism is exceptional. He is very detail oriented. He went out of his way to recommend few things like missing exhaust in our kitchen. When you seek any suggestions, he doesnt treat it as a way to make more money and instead suggest us what is doable. Many other contractors were reluctant to install an island in kitchen but James is never hesitant to try out something that we requests for. He would be the go person for any of our remodeling needs. If any suggestions to improve, I’d suggest to have frequent discussions with the client on site in person (sometimes text communications make it tough) and you’d be outstanding in your profession. I highly recommend James to any of your construction or remodeling needs.

Good quality work - very conscientious tradesmen. They did not hesitate to do over anything I asked them to and when rain had affected the stain on the deck, they re-painted the whole deck. It all looks great. I will use them again.

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

We had a very good experience with Rick and Manuel and their team. Our project was a whole bath complete reno/remodel and a half bath retiling/new fixtures, with 2 sliding doors to replace the former doors. They were so accommodating and helped us achieve everything we were looking for (including switching out the doors which was probably a very tricky task given the layout of the rooms). Rick was realistic with a timeframe and also helped us get everything done before we needed it to be, even when I decided I wanted to change something last minute. Bottom line is that I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for projects big and small. If we ever decide to do more home improvements it will certainly be with them. Photos don't even begin to do it justice (sorry for low-res phone pics!).

Absolutely amazing experience with these guys!!! I was extremely impressed with their puncutuality- they arrived early each morning & finished the product exactly when they said they would. Most importantly, the final product was of great quality; my favorite thing about All-Rise is that they are extremely detail oriented.. very hard to find!! I’ve had issues in the past with other contractors & their unresponsiveness... everyone that i’ve spoken to at All-Rise was extremely informative and knowledgeable; these guys really take pride in what they do. Highly recommend.

Tom is one of the best painters I have ever seen. Tom's professionalism and cleanliness is only overshadowed by his courteous demeanor. Based on the scale of the job I was expecting 2 weeks maybe more, Tom finished the job in just under one week. There is little to no doubt that I will be hiring Tom to tackle other projects around my home.

I had a very good experience working with Ty and his team. Ty was very responsive throughout the process of remodeling two bathrooms in my apartment. He was very good at communicating the timeline for the project and keeping my husband and me abreast of progress made each week and each day. He has a good, hard working team that put in a lot of effort to meet daily and weekly targets for completion of the project.

These guys do what they say they will do and don't try to find ways to get more money out of you during construction. Actually the opposite, they used their relationships with vendors to negotiate even a better price on materials than I would have gotten on my own. Very honest and I've recommended them to other homeowners who also love their professionalism and work. A++

Euro Home Remodelers was excellent! Leons was very professional: fair, thorough, and clear. He gave us clear expectations about what the job would entail, and he met each one of them. He even came back multiple times to finish the project without doing a rush/shoddy job that he could complete in one day. An excellent work ethic, and a joy to work with. Would definitely hire him again for all of our needs. Thanks, Leons!

We did a major reno tearing out our existing kitchen and replacing it with high end cabinetry, appliances, lighting, flooring, etc. It is a large space and their work was first rate. Stayed on schedule, great crew and sub contractors such as electrician, flooring and finishing as well as securing the apt to minimize dust from the demolition. Great guys! Very professional and honest.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
