I hired hired Berry Home Improvements & Handymen Services to install and faucet in my bathroom. The job definitely needed someone with Berry's knowledge and experience. He was very professional and had all the tools necessary to get the job done right. He also installed a ceiling fan. With both jobs, he was very patient and cleaned up after he was done. I'll definitely use Berry's Home Improvements & Handymen Services again.

Joseph is super responsive with an emphasis put on customer service. He helped me with a dishwasher repair job that other installers refused to do. I was very satisfied with his work, communication, and availability. He is now my go to for anything having to do with my apartment!

Ely has done two patching jobs for us. His work is beautiful. He is respectful of our home, he is neat and his prices are very fair. One job was fixing a plaster wall that was damaged due to water. The second was sheetrock ceiling patches, also due to water damage. The work for both jobs was seamless! We will definitely continue to work with Ely. We highly recommend him.

I'm glad I hired Rick to work on my projects (assemble and install two ceiling fans, replace faucet, medicine cabinet and light in the bathroom. He used his professional judgement on a few of the items rather than just getting the job done because I asked. Turns out my entire apartment is jerry-rigged and Rick spent several more hours here than he had planned. I'm glad Rick took his time to do it right. I was skeptical hiring a handyman here in NYC, but Rick was great and I'd definitely hire him again in the future.

Valdemir did excellent work! He installed a floor-to-ceiling vertical bookshelf and was able to supplement the pieces it came with to ensure the piece was secure hanging from the cement wall. Worked quickly and carefully and is very knowledgable. Very highly recommend.

I initially spoke with TNS about a bathroom remodel but we also needed a ceiling replaced (due to a now repaired roof leak) and an overly large closet knocked out in our kids room. The kids room took precedence obviously and they were able to come out and get started right away. The guys worked quickly and got the closet knocked out, the ceiling taken down, and the new ceiling up all in the same day! They came back to put a second coat of spackle and then a third day to sand and prime. The room was left clean and ready for me to paint and it looks awesome! I will definitely hire them again for future projects.

Peter hung 2 tricky ABC Carpet and Home lights for us recently. I first attempted to hang these lights with my father in law and we were ready to tear our hair out it was so complicated. Our ceiling is made in such a way that we could not penetrate it with masonry bits. Peter was confident, competent, and prepared. He breezed through the install in less time than I anticipated. I highly recommend his services and will be using him again.

Removal of wood paneling, tiled ceiling and installation of sheetrock and painting new surface areas. Ozzy and his team did an outstanding job removing and installing the existing paneling and applying the new sheetrock especially in difficult areas. Ozzy worked tirelessly to ensure every aspect of the job was completed to my liking. He took the time and effort to make sure no corners were cut and provided expert advice on areas I was uncertain about. His knowledge and experience proved worthy. His assistance and selection of paints helped tremendously. Highly recommend Ozzy and look forward to using him on future projects.

Tom did a superior job replacing our bathroom tile floor under unusually trying circumstances. Not only did he accommodate a tight schedule, unpredictable work conditions and multiple unexpected complications, he advised me throughout on my options and went out of his way to make sure the job was done right and at a very fair price. The result is a beautiful floor that has transformed the room and far exceeded my expectations. Tom is a skilled professional who clearly makes a practice of bringing creativity and resourcefulness to his work, but it is his personal integrity that puts him several steps above most of his competition. I have already begun making plans with him for future work.

What a fantastic Contractor! We had 5 contractors come to look at our basement as it needed a new staircase, walls, ceiling, flooring and new electric. Out of the 5 George was the only one who a) turned up on time to quote and b) submitted his estimate when he said he was going to. That not only gave us a good indication of his reliability but also the estimate was really fair compared to some of the others The basement looks absolutely fantastic and we are so so pleased with the job that he has done for us. He was reliable, tidy, polite and also gave us some really good ideas for some areas we weren't sure what to do with. You won't go wrong hiring George I promise and look forward to having him back to do our attic as soon as we can afford it :-)

Mike and crew are fantastic — polite and professional but most importantly they take pride in the craft of their work. A truly talented team, they did everything from tile work, custom radiator covers, installation lighting and new molding to painting and wallpaper. As a creative director, with a discerning eye, I was pleasantly surprised when they were pointing out touch ups they planned to do, before I even noticed. Also they worked late to finish the job on time so it was ready on the day we needed to move in. A2Z Renovation will be the first ones I call the next time I need help.

Rusty did a wonderful job installing my TV ceiling mount, a/c window unit, and bed frame. Got to my apartment the same day within 2 hours of first messaging. He was very quick, efficient, and a pleasure to be around. Would definitely hire him again in the future if needed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
