It couldn't have been better! Manny is personable, talented and he knows what he's doing. He hung a two sided clock in my kitchen, a vintage mirror and window blinds. The mirror was somewhat difficult because of its age but Manny looked and thought and hung it beautifully and safely! I am very happy!

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

I submitted my request for bids and within 30 minutes had received 3 responses. Andres with Santiago’s was the first to respond. All three told me they would go to the home and get me an estimate within a few days. Andres was the only one to actually follow through on this and went to the home the very next day. At that point my mind was made up and the fact the other two waited days and days to respond cemented my decision even further. The others never ended up going out to give me an estimate and all communication ceased from that point. I am based out of Tulsa, OK so having someone with good communication skills allowed me to rest assured knowing my client was in good hands. I had a fairly extensive list of repairs which needed to be done on my client’s home. The work included painting the entire foundation, replacing the back door, repainting the front patio and back steps leading into the home, repainting the chimney, repairing and repainting door frames, repairing a small window in the basement, repairing the floor in the kitchen and repairing the walls in the half bath. We agreed on a price and Andres blew me away when he offered to replace the entire kitchen floor for only a few extra dollars. There was a few pieces of tile that had been cracked but finding replica replacements was proving impossible. He ended up putting laminate wood floors throughout the kitchen and my client was blown away with not only the look, but the cost and quality of work. The half bath repair was also something else. It literally looks like a different room! Andres was hands-on the entire time and kept me in the loop every step of the way. I would’ve been happy enough with the work itself but the fact he provided me with such good service let me know I always have a trustworthy, budget friendly repairman for any NJ area loan I have from here out. He was that good. Andres knew this job was fairly time sensitive. He brought out some extra help the second day to get the job done for us. The appraiser was coming back out to do the re-inspection and at the last second I was informed of the chimney repair needing to be completed. I called Andres right away and he immediately went to the home and got the chimney painted. His willingness to do this enabled my client to get her refi secured in a timely fashion which meant the world to her…and me too. If you need some work done but don’t know where to start or have been burned in the past, give Andres and the guys at Santiago’s a call. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Andres! Jon

Johnny was a pleasure to work with - from fair initial quote (which he held to), to scheduling, to his initial walk-through and then, of course, with the work itself. He cut wood to create shelves, replaced a number of light fixtures and adapted a few fixtures with ingenuity, hung window and bath hardware, an Ikea ceiling-mount channel thing, and - entirely outside of our original scope, diagnosed and rented the tool for removing an awful heavy iron door grill/gate. He was smart, knowledgeable, thoughtful, thrifty, accommodated changes...The real deal. Would/will hire again.

Kevin is a lovely person and very easy to work with. He did wonderful work in several areas: fixing a drawer, painting a ceiling & window and extensive brick sealing. There's plenty more to do and I'm relieved to have found someone as competent and nice as Kevin.

I actually hired Ardmor to do more than just install a few new windows. They also fixed some screens and replaced some glass and chains in a few windows. My home is 100+ years old and u would never know that all the existing woodwork around the windows was ever removed and put back in. I would most definitely recommend this company. Not only is their work exceptional, but there staff is too!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
