Sasha is the greatest math tutor I could have asked for. I had no confidence in my GRE math ability before working with Sasha, and a few weeks later, now two days before my test, I know that there's no problem I can't handle. That's all thanks to Sasha.

Needed math strategy tips, study planning advice, as well as general supplementary algebra 2 tutoring to get my algebra on the college level necessary to pass the CLEP exam. Aron was extremely helpful in both directing me to areas that needed improvement and in helping me improve them. Definitely recommended. 5 stars!

I would like to highly recommend Dr. Howard Siegerman as a tutor of both math and chemistry. He tutored by son Tom when he was taking a difficult series of math courses in middle school and high school. With his encouragement and patience he was able to rebuild Tom's confidence. With this renewed confidence and additional practice, Tom's grades improved dramatically. Dr. Siegerman also mentored Tom in chemistry, providing real life experience to theoretical questions. Tom in now at New York University pursuing a degree in biochemistry.

Cannot recommend Julie enough. We have worked with a number of tutors and she was far and away the best. Solid, calm, clear. Good at explaining the math and working with my middle school daughter. and best of all, calmed her down and gave her test strategies so she is less stressed about the standardized tests coming up.

Terry has been working with our son for more than 1 year now. Aaron was starting grade 8 when he began tutoring on line. His tutor sessions with Terry have improved Aaron's confidence with the fundamentals of math, and Aaron graduated grade 8 with an A grade. We plan to have Aaron stay involved, throughout his highschool years. The one on one, online venue demands focus, attention and interaction, all of these skills have improved the quality of the time Aaron spends studying math. On line tutoring is a convenient method of exposing younger students to the electronic classroom, developing a comfort level with this media, is critical for postsecondary education.

Rob Cohen tutored my 6th grader when he transitioned to a new citywide gifted and talented school that had an accelerated math program with a very challenging teacher. Rob came to our home weekly to work with my son over an academic year. He helped keep my son on track and ahead of the coursework. My son really enjoyed working with Rob who has a great personality, was very supportive and made math fun. Rob was always punctual and was always easily accessible by email and phone. He also worked with my 5th grader this year to prepare for the ELA exam. I have recommended Rob to many friends without hesitation. He is terrific.

My child has worked consistently with Meghan for 2 years. We began using Meghan when our child's teacher began expressing concern for her progress with math concepts, memorization of multiplication facts, and problem solving skills. Meghan immediately developed a plan to help my child be successful, confident, and be well prepared for classroom lessons. I appreciated Meghan's communication with me regarding strategies that I can use to help my child when I'm helping with homework, etc. Meghan is extremely positive, upbeat, and I have never seen her in a down mood. I would highly recommend!

Leslie is a fantastic tutor! She is caring, patient, and understands how to get my son to connect the concepts to the practical application of math. We will continue to work with Leslie for as long as she allows us to and I will recommend her to parents of middle school students looking for a patient tutor.

I have been tutored by Beata for 4 years so far. We started off by meeting up whenever I was struggling with a math lesson in school or if I had a project due and she would help me. I noticed quickly that Beata isn’t just trying to breeze through the time of our session but really tries to get me to learn the concept. Beata has helped me through countless geometry, algebra, and calculus lessons. Without Beata I don’t think that it would’ve been possible for me to pass high school and I thank her dearly for that.

I am one of Cris' former Math student. Cris tutored me in high school Math, while he was two grades below. My high school daughter, and son in college, as well as my nieces and nephews were also tutored by Cris. Cris is an excellent teacher! He knows the content of the mathematical material and his analytical skills are the highest I have encountered. He has immeasurable passion for Math. He has an invested interest in his student learning Math very well. Cris ideology is one that embraces the idea of knowledge and independent analysis by the student. He makes every effort for the student to gain knowledge, not solely for the test, but for acquired knowledge and personal advancement. Cris is not merely a Math Tutor or a Math Teacher. He is a Math "Philisopher." His love, passion and knowledge for Math is radiant; it evokes in his students the willingness to understand. His creativity allows him to learn and understand each student level of understanding of Math. He utilizes different methodology to expand the student's understanding. I strongly recommend Cris as a Math Tutor for students from the middle school to college graduate level.

There are not enough superlatives to describe how wonderful Carlos Juarez is! He has been tutoring our now 11 year old son for 2 years. Our son comes home from a long day at school and can't wait to begin his tutoring session with Carlos. He has learned a tremendous amount during each session and, most importantly, he has gained the confidence to attack the most challenging of math problems, due to the way Carlos approaches his tutoring. He offers suggestions, solutions, and challenges our son's mind so that he can manage the math work on his own. Carlos has tremendous resources to target lessons to our son's needs. There is not anything more we could have wanted from our tutoring experience. Anyone who works with Carlos, has been given a GIFT! Good Luck and Enjoy.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

            • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
            • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
            • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
            • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
