This is the first time I've ever worked with an interior designer and I loved working with Amy. She's super responsive, pushes you in terms of your design aesthetic but also listens and tries to incorporate any ideas you might have. It was an awesome experience and we are IN LOVE with our new home.

Michele is very personable and knowledgeable in her skill set. She helped us pick paint colors for our row home in Philly! We now have an appt with a painter in a few days! I appreciate all of her suggestions and will likely reach out to her in the future for other home design/styling projects.

Exterior painting of a mid century modern house was exquisite. Interior painting of 4 bedrooms was equally well done.

I hired Dee to help give me some new ideas for my living room. I had no clue as to what I wanted done to the room other than to refresh it. She asked me some questions about my likes and dislikes. Blue is my favorite color and I shard this with Dee. About ten minutes after she left she called and excitedly told me she was going to give me a room based on my favorite color. I wasn't sure about having a blue room but once she returned fully armed with swatches, paint colors and plans she had me sold. I love my blue room!!! The walls are not blue but the furniture is and I get so many compliments on this room. I love how she mixed patterns and colors to bring the room together. Once again I hired Dee to bring her creativeness to decorating my dining and family room and again she far exceeded my expectations on both rooms. Dee hired everyone that was to see my projects to its completion and if I had any questions about their work Dee handled it all. She did research on the furniture and the stores for their quality and durability before she approached me about where I should shop for my items. She asked questions I would have never known to ask. Her prices are very fair and she earns every dime. Dee stuck with the job and crew, i.e. painter, contractor she deemed capable of getting the job I needed done until my project was completed. She is so true to her motto "Everyone Deserves A Beautiful Home" and that's exactly what she gave and helped me achieve! I almost wish I had more rooms for her to decorate. I tell her that my house went from a DIY project to an actual magazine worthy look and I love it! I recommend her because this is her passion and it shows through her work.

Working with Ali and her team was a very pleasant experience. I had some anxiety about working with an interior designer based on some prior bad experiences. However this experience was quite the opposite; Ali was awesome! She incorporated my vision in the design for the space, remained on budget and used some existing pieces that I couldn't give up. I absolutely love my living room/dinning room combination. I look forward to having her return for an update to my family room.

Linda is a well trained, consummate professional. However, she's not intimidating - she's very realistic - and she listens to what the client is hoping to achieve. She's very creative and works with the client to achieve what is important to the client - not her vision. In the end, she politely challenges you to stretch, but ultimately, the result is a beautiful fusion of excellent design married to what YOU want!

I've worked with Linsey several times in the last few months - she has been my go-to for refreshing the decor my home and helping me finding my exact interior style. She is able to deliver the dream pieces we all crave to have in our home but at a much more pocket friendly price point. My husband has even agreed that her help in styling our home has significantly improved the overall vibe when welcoming guests/our own moods while we are home. A space that is pulled together and inviting makes such a positive impact. In addition to this, I've also sought out her help for providing the most adorable/innovative bridal shower favors for my friend's special day. Linsey's airplant holders were the talk of the party, and everyone wanted to know more. I HIGHLY recommend Linsey for any interior styling needs and as a go-to for creative, thoughtful pieces to decorate your home with - her work is truly a conversation starter!

Lisa was a great designer to work with. She helped us with every step of the way in designing both our kitchen and bathrooms. She helped design our kitchen layout and helped us pick finishes for the kitchen including countertops, appliances and cabinets. She always made sure we were happy with our choices. We are extremely satisfied and would highly recommend her to others.

I was in a pinch for a set of blueprints needed to submit to the city and needed them asap. My entire job could not move forward without them. I spoke with Dale on the urgency of the matter along with several other design services. LET ME TELL YOU. Dale Graham knows his stuff, he was able to take my details over the phone and fill in all the gaps I couldnt communicate. The other guys had no idea what I was even asking for! Not only was the final product a total sucess, but it was completed above and beyond a timely manner. As a Thumbtack pro myself I knew exactly where to turn and could not be happier. Dale Graham Cad Design Services is now the go to company for Bulletproof Welding LLC. Thank you Dale!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
