We were looking to replace a bathroom vanity and to remove some existing tiling around that vanity. Jason was fast and thorough. The new vanity looks great and works perfectly. He also did a great job in helping to preliminary spackle up the wall where the tile had been.

Jerome did a great job mounting a 60inch TV to the wall. Was a tough job as there was a concrete wall behind the drywall but he managed to make it work. It looks great.

I hired G&M Painting to redo my entire 2BDR/2BATH apartment, and was not disappointed by the work. My requirements included four different wall colors and a dry-erase wall, and Grievin and his team delivered, on a tight schedule. Due to the time-constrain, there were some minor imperfections I've noticed; I reached out to Grievin who personally came and addressed them; I was thoroughly impressed. I would definitely hire G&M again in the future.

Pete is absolutely amazing. He made several repairs to an apartment including painting, replacing dry wall, patching a hole in the floor, caulking the walls, installing molding trims and plenty more. Whenever he discovered any issues, he brought tontonmy attention and found creative ways to make things work. He's personable, professional and punctual.

I really don't know where to begin- EVERY part of the experience was FANTASTIC! From the minute I scheduled the appointment to the excellent services rendered. I was so impressed- my scheduled time was 12P-2P; at 12:00 Howard called and gave me his status. Howard and his apprentice arrived- Howard was the expert! and it was proven-- I could not have asked for anything more. I had a 60" TV mounted- beautiful! Clean; perfect. In fact, I will be contacting Howard tomorrow to install on wall speakers to accompany the TV. If you are looking to hire, don't go any further- you will be so delighted with his service and expertise! A WONDERFUL experience! Donna & Eric- Point Pleasant, NJ

Glen and his crew did an excellent job laying my natural stone floors. From the first conversation, I knew they were knowledgeable and professional. The installers worked with my family so that we could maintain our normal routines as much as possible during the installation. The flooring installation exceeded my expectations. Glen worked with my budget and provided helpful suggestions to save money. I look forward to a long relationship with JR Custom Builders as they are coming back to renovate my kitchen.

What a find! Matt was very professional and completed the work in good time. He changed out some old pipes installed a tankless water heater and removed our old water heater. His estimate was competitive and he did a few extra things—fixed a loose toilet handle, rehung a clothing bar that had come off the wall didn’t charge anymore. I’m definitely going to be a repeat customer. Thanks Matt!

Excellent. I just have to say that Marcelo did an absolutely incredible job for me recently. He really takes customer's satisfaction seriously and through every step he would check with me and kept me updated. Our bathroom suffered extensive ceiling and wall damage from a broken water pipe, Marcelo did an impeccable job fixing the damage replacing drywall, and painting with exceptional attention to detail throughout the entire process , Marcelo also painted my Mom's house interior, the job turned out beautifully and I cannot recommend Marcelo and his team highly enough.

I hired them for major renovation of my house such as floor, entire kitchen, opening a wall, painting, central air, French drain, front steps, etc. They also get ready for our rental floor on time, so we can rent it timely manner. Price was very reasonable, but last 10% of work took very long time. It was very annoying that it got delay so long since first 90%of work was done faster than expected. However, they were honest about why it was delayed which I liked about. After all, I would hire them again for further house renovation.

Pedro was exceptional! I needed a room painted quickly. Called him at the last minute and he showed up to do the job the very next day on a Saturday!!! But the best was the job he did, professional, beautifully done and clean. I am going to hire him for every painting job in the future and will highly recommend him to friends and family. I appreciated his punctuality, the great quality of his plastering, his cleaning up thoroughly when he was done, and he gave a very good price for his plastering job on our ceiling, on the plaster under our staircase, and he explained things well. I would highly recommend him, and would use his services again. Debbie Deane

Manny removed an interior wall which separated my living room and dining room. Very happy with the outcome. He is trustworthy (I was not home most of the time for the 3 day job), always on time (8:15am sharp), and his price was very reasonable. Will be sure to call him for my next project.

Having myself lived in many homes...knowing a thing or 2, Jose is very professional, efficient and knows how to properly get the job done! He will leave you with a product that will last! We recently hired Jose to help with some dry wall. Again, he did a great job. We 100% recommend Jose and his team!

I purchased a home which needed a total remodel. I contracted DNR to take on the work and they did an amazing job. I wanted to change the layout of the kitchen to add sliding glass doors and they gave me exactly what I pictured- I get so many compliments on my kitchen. I also wanted to change the half bathroom into a full bath, which I thought would be impossible. After knocking down some walls and breaking through the floor, they were able to get the plumbing into place to expand the bathroom add a glass shower stall. I couldn't be happier with the outcome and I always refer them to anyone I know that needs work done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

I had a new vanity installed in a spare bathroom and need some holes patched up. In one section a old pipe needs to be cut a inch or so in order for the drywall slab to fit. Not a big job as it is two small sections that need work. The one section was previously repaired prior to me purchasing the property and appears to not have been done very well so I would probably want it opened up more so one full piece can be installed and look better.
