I hired Upholstery Works to reupholster my 2 leather dinning room chairs. I wanted a change of color and fabric. I met Arturo to view samples of fabrics. Arturo came to me and was very professional, helpful and very responsive. The quality of work was excellent. I couldn’t believe how beautiful my chairs looked and how perfect the fabric looked. The chairs were dropped off in my house which was awesome and worked out with my busy schedule. I will definitely recommend this company. I thank Upholstery Works for making my chairs look beautiful and go so well with my new home decor.

Joseph and his team were fantastic! We hired him on very short notice and with very limited information, and he hustled to make it work with very little stress on my end. Joseph is incredibly professional and straightforward which is really refreshing. They did a great job with the task and set expectations at the start without delaying work. I would be happy to hire Joseph and Ariel Consultants again if I need any contracting work. Thanks, Joseph!

After we painted 6-7 walls in our home with one color that turned out to be not the color we expected, we were intimidated to the core. It was like getting an SLR camera in hand and shooting lots of photos with excitement only to find out how messed up those shots were since nothing was known about the settings. Arati came to our rescue and made an emergency visit within 15 hours of contacting her. She listened and quickly understood our tastes and suggested colors and accents that not only saved but turned out so beautiful and elegant looking that we can't thank her enough. She could do it with the limitation of we already bought furnitures on our own. She has been continuously in touch through SMS and phone calls in order to inquire about the progress. She takes her consultancy seriously and follows it up and does not leave the scene once got paid for. I would like to thank her and would undoubtedly contact her whenever we require her services and expertise.

Did a fantastic job. Stayed on the job long and hard to make certain it was fixed. Also noticed a potentially fatal carbon monoxide leakage and repaired it as well. THE BEST! HIRE HIM!

Ursallie designed the furniture and furnishing layout of the living room, dining room and bedroom of my one bedroom coop in Flushing, NY. This design was based on my needs and my style and color preferences. Ursallie produced three design options after our initial meeting. I decided on one with a few changes. Ursallie ordered all the furniture and furnishings. Three weeks later Ursallie supervised the moving and installation of the furniture and furnishings which relieved me from a lot of stress. The place was thoroughly cleaned before they left. Ursallie was very punctual for all her appointments with me. She is very straight, honest and has a keen sense of style. She keeps within the budget. I will recommend her to my friends.”

Let me just say, in one word, our experience with Cricket was truly FABULOUS. She has an extraordinary eye for space and design and was able to transform our home into something straight out of our dreams. And in very little time! Our family loved her energy and willingness to work with us to accommodate our tastes and color preferences with her own flare and creativity. We were most impressed with how she was able to combine all different antique, modern and traditional pieces into one cohesive and inviting space. Thank you Cricket!!

Full Disclosure - Darlene Cohen is my little sister so this review is biased ...but accurate. I watched her creative skills and path to design begin as an 11 year as she designed and crafted her own clothes at the Local Girls Club That launched her to The Fashion Institute of Technology F. I. T. and her career as head designer at DonnKenny as well as founder / designer of her own clothing line “Forever Kids”. When she had her own kid - her direction and talents evolved into the design side of home interiors Her keen sense of color ....of shape ... and space which turned fabric into Beautiful clothes is now turning Home interiors in to beautiful space. As we built our dream mountain top him in South Carolina - Darlene partnered with my wife and guided us in several key areas - paint color - fabric - and furniture acquisition. The results are now a pleasing and serene contemporary mountain interior looking out on to a view of equal beauty. Darlene listened - offered alternatives and assembled the final ensemble. We love it. You will love her.

I met Dana randomly at our local butcher, the two seemed pretty close. She was talking so lively about her work, I decided to hire her. The challenge for me, was, mixing my fiancé art with my plants in our dinning room, and as well, to convert a tiny closet into a cozy guest room. She did a fantastic job, I got all the colors I wanted, the room is so nice and practical, I worry my guest will stay forever. Dana is very fast, communicative, funny and talented, I will recommend her in no time. Best of all, she brings croque mousieur for lunch!

Meryl has an amazing sense for design, color and space. I live in Santa Barbara, and have started re-working the interior spaces in my home of 32 years. Meryl came in with fresh ideas that I never would have though of and helped me with choosing the right furniture, the right color palate, picking the best lighting and helping with freshening the look of living in the same space for 32 years. Meryl pays great attention to detail and knows how to create lovely spaces that enhance the beauty of your home. Her experience in the field and her knowledge of what is out there, really helped streamline our project. I would highly recommend her services to anyone looking for a fabulous Interior Designer.

Imagine for a minute arriving in the trawling metropolis of New York City with only three suitcases and a box. You immediately start work and then spend every other waking moment over days, weeks and perhaps months hunting down your perfect apartment only then faced with moving into a white box. Time poor, and faced with the interior design skills of a fifth grader, what do you do? Of course you begin your research online but very soon become absolutely inundated with the plethora of options available: Everything from complete turnkey services for the cost of an arm and two legs to the other extreme where you upload floor plans and without any consultation you’re provided with a list of items you need to purchase and not really sure it’s the look you’re going for in a space you want to call home . Then you find Joe from Designs by Human. Joe provided the perfect balance between complete turn key and internet email; a personalized Human approach just as his namesake suggests. With his consultative style Joe met with me and spent time understanding what I was looking for: A warm design and a space that would feel like home — likely a tough ask (just imagine a typical New York apartment and a design that accommodates a place for overseas guest, a space to entertain and a place to work from home) and a client (me) who’s likes to get involved and is hands on. But Joe with his incredible patience absolutely nailed it. An amazing design in such a small space filled with interesting artistic elements and features integrated throughout my home. It feels warm and personalized incorporating elements of “me”, is complimented by my guests, and is certainly something that I’d never have managed to accomplish by myself. So if you're looking for someone to help with your own project I'd really recommend getting in touch with Joe from Designs by Human. Thanks Joe. I’m really glad we met and thanks for all your help!

I had contacted Ethereal about a fairly large project that I had under my wings. I recently bought a house and wanted the interior to be professionally designed. Working with Ethereal was easy and cost effective. They designed each room to my liking using existing products as well as new ones that we had agreed upon. From choosing color palettes to the final product, the finished product was amazing. I have gotten so many compliments on my new place and have referred them to everyone I know.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
