We found Jason on Thumbtack and used him to update plumbing in a house we purchased that was built in 1940. He is incredibly knowledgable, on time, did exactly what we needed and had by far the best prices I have ever found. He did such good work that we referred him to both my mother-in-law and father for emergency services where he showed up during late hours on weekends and did not rip them off. Thank you so much for being a great plumber and an honest business man Jason! We will be referring everyone to you!!

Greivin is a very reliable, honest and responsive contractor who did a great job at repainting our house. I offered him the job after he submitted the best bid among 4 contractors to paint my 1340 sq feet house in Hoboken. My walls were painted in dark colors with different rooms having different colors and we were shifting to all white - he did a great job that needed four coats and also agreed to repair our wooden floor in a small corner for no extra cost. He has done a great and timely job - in a condo building, he did the job with no disturbance to neighbors. Highly recommended.

I hired Darin after getting a rediculas estimate to replace a water heater from another handyman in my house. Darin installed a new water heater at almost half the cost of what the other guy wanted. I will definitely use him again.

Nick did a great job. He came to the house on time, and mounted my 70 inch TV above the fire place. all the work was done professionally. He and his helper also moved a large TV stand I had to my basement as a courtesy. Highly recommend using Nick. I will probably use him again when I am ready to do some work in my basement.

I was satisfied with the work. There were some communication voids preventing me from giving a 5 star review. I will consider working with them in the future. My house is 128 years old and it is hard to get people to work on it, much less in a timely manner. S&K did the work in a timely manner and it seems to have been done correctly.

Al came to the rescue with a price I could manage for junk removal from my yard (up a flight of steps) after my kitchen demo. He had to play a good game of Tetris to make all the stuff fit in his van, but he really filled it to the brim. He then helped me move any remaining bags and wood to the front of my house for easier removal for regular garbage night.

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

Chris from Szar builders was great. Arrived on time with what looked like some pretty nifty tools (I'm in to gadgets). He installed a galley kitchen for us with no issues. He also builds custom furniture, will be getting a buffet cabinet for the dining room, can't wait for that. Highly recommend him!!

I reviewed proposals from four painting companies before deciding on ER Fine Homes. Dan' quote was quite competitive and he was very professional as well as being very easy to speak with, communicate with onsite or on the phone/text. His team was very professional and very meticulous with my full house exterior painting job. One side of my exterior was problematic, due to the nature of the cedar used and how it was installed when the house was originally built. The team worked tirelessly to address all those issues on that side to ensure the final effect was perfect...and it was. I could not be more pleased with this work and this company. Don't think twice, give them a chance, at least get a quote from Dan. But if you engage with them, my bet is you will be very happy. Good luck!

Alberto was very responsive via phone and text. His price was in line with 1 estimate I got and a tiny bit cheaper than the other. My husband handled the estimates and decided on Alberto and his worker, Dominic, because of the 3 groups of men giving the estimate, he felt most comfortable with them. I'm home alone with an infant and he wanted to go not just with the person who could do the job best, but who he felt most comfortable in the house doing the work while he wasn't home. Both Alberto and Dominic were very nice, helpful, professional and respectful. Dominic did the actual work while Alberto popped in because he was working on another job. The day they came to do the work, I added on a few small things and increased the work on the larger job. They were very reasonable with the change in price and offered me options I hadn't thought of as well. They started the job a day earlier than I expected them to, which was nice. Especially because it ended up taking a day longer than expected because of the weather. The work was done to perfection and I am very happy. I would definitely hire them again. These are people I would trust to leave unattended in my home. Top notch work at more than reasonable pricing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
