Sasha is a phenomenal math tutor. She is patient, knowledgeable and extremely gifted in simplifying complex concepts. I would go to class understanding topics that other students struggled with. To put it simply, she is professor quality at the price of an affordable tutor. No disappointments, no areas of improvement needed.

Best Decision You Can Make for Math! There's a reason why Manny is one of the top tutors on WyzAnt... He's fantastic. I contacted him two weeks prior to taking the GMAT and after having him tutor me for 30+ hrs. I understand math better than I ever have in my 26 years. Manny's approach is what makes him an excellent tutor. First of all he's genius when it comes to the material, but his unique ability to convey abstract concepts to someone who perceives herself as quantitatively challenged is truly a gift to anyone who has him as a tutor. He has some great tricks that are very intuitive, so knowledge will come naturally to you on test day; many tutors will just have you memorize dozens of formulas that are easy to confuse or forgot, but fortunately Manny does not believe in that methodology. Manny is unbelievably patient, will be one of your best advocates, and will work with your scheduling constraints. He truly wants his students to succeed, and I am so happy that I found him. My 16 year old sister is struggling with Calculus at the moment and after hearing me go on and on about how great Manny is, she's going to start tutoring with him too. Book him ASAP. You'll be so happy you did! Ali

I first contacted Charles after sitting for my GMAT exam and being disappointed with my score. I thought I could do much better and after reading reviews of his tutoring work, I decided he would be best to help me improve my score. I was hoping Charles could show me where I was struggling because I felt I had a good handle on the material before each exam before. I purchased multiple GMAT tools from all the top courses, but apparently, I kept missing something. During my first session with Charles, he immediately knew how to solve each question efficiently, showing me multiple ways to arrive at the same answer. He also taught me mental math skills that saved me precious time in the difficult quant section. Charles was sincere in letting me know the amount of time and effort needed to score above 700. He planned out our sessions accordingly, making sure I mastered each topic before moving on. I appreciated how Charles set up our classes with short drill sets to test the concepts he taught me and if I continued to struggle with them, we would review until my understanding was concrete. After working with Charles three times a week for two months, I saw a 150 point increase in my official GMAT score. I would recommend Charles to anyone who plans on taking the GMAT or any other standardized exam.

I would like to highly recommend Dr. Howard Siegerman as a tutor of both math and chemistry. He tutored by son Tom when he was taking a difficult series of math courses in middle school and high school. With his encouragement and patience he was able to rebuild Tom's confidence. With this renewed confidence and additional practice, Tom's grades improved dramatically. Dr. Siegerman also mentored Tom in chemistry, providing real life experience to theoretical questions. Tom in now at New York University pursuing a degree in biochemistry.

My son took the SAT twice, in April and June of this year. He went from an 1170 to an 1130! He needed help, so luckily we got Mr. Goldstein. After 6-7 hrs. of tutoring, my son got his ticket to a better college....1260. It was worth it!

Stacey Dreher is an educator who models excellence. Stacey will put into her work with your child her talent in teaching, her professionalism and training and also her heart. Stacey is of a rare form of teachers - she has a highly developed sense of skills and intuition which allows her to connect immediately with students and hone in on exactly which areas of reading need to be developed. Her versatility allows her to work with a wide range of students who often feel vulnerable given their learning struggles. I know from personal experience watching Stacey work with my sister with severe cognitive impairments (whom the doctors told us she would never learn how to read) - transform into a literate and avid reader. Stacey was persistent in her goals, clear with her expectations and knowledgeable of literacy development which set a path for my sister to successfully learn how to read. Stacey brings a warm personality to her work and creates a safe space for students to take risks. Stacey offers immediate feedback to her families and is able to explain her approach and goals so that both the students and parents have a clear sense of what to work towards. I frequently recommend Stacey to students and families and will continue to do so, as she is a true asset to literacy development. Any family who works with Stacey will receive the highest level of commitment and attention - she is highly recommended!

I first reached out to Spencer to prep me for a job interview. This involved updating my cover letter and preparing/rehearsing my interview questions and answers. With Spencer’s tutoring, I felt much more confident and ready for the interview. While going through the final stages of the interview process, the hiring company tasked me to prepare a custom presentation. Spencer’s thoughtful questions, creativity and attentiveness helped me nail this final task and I landed the job! I still work with Spencer on any speeches and business presentations I have to give. He takes the time to understand my point of view on the subject in order to help craft the right material and tone. Throughout each project, Spencer is always helping me improve my articulation and vocabulary. This has made a tremendous difference in both my professional and personal life! Overall, Spencer is an excellent teacher and public speaker.

Max was a delight to work with. He tutored my son for 2 years when we were in Shanghai, China. Our son was in middle school at the time, (7th and 8th grade) and he needed help in getting organized and concentrating on his school work. I interviewed Max and selected him because of his warmth and engaging personality. He is also a writer and, at the time, our son was really into drama and creative writing so we thought that would inspire him. Max was so patient with our son who, at times, could be exasperating. Max would just roll with it and find a way to re-engage him. I don't think our son would have done as well as he did in school if it weren't for Max. Our whole family loved seeing Max, including our housekeeper who got a kick out of talking with Max in Mandarin. We highly recommend Max! He was sensitive to our son's moods and figured out how to motivate him, he was always punctual and very reliable.

Charles was a great Math tutor. He has a great level of understanding in various areas of of the subject and is able to teach in a way that can help anyone understand. He has helped me as well as many of the students I serve in Algebra, Statistics, and Calculus. He has even been able to help one of my students with special learning needs. In addition, I was able refer Charles to friend who was completing doctorate work and he helped her with her data analysis. Great job!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
