Hi my name is Jennifer, my husband & I live in a 2 story house in the Bronx. We used Joseph's services for plumbing issues we were having. Our bathroom sink was leaking water & our hot water was not working. We had Joseph come over to checkout the problem & he was very understanding about the severity of our situation. We have two kids so we needed our sink & especially our hot water working asap. Joseph was able to figure out the problem quickly. After he figured out that there was a cracked pipe under the sink & a faulty thermocouple in our hot water heater, he explained to us the procedure necessary. He sounded very familiar with these type of situations. He told us he runs into these problems quite often. My husband and I felt confident in giving him the job. Joseph was very pleasant, professional & very considerate of our property, he made sure that nothing got dirty or damaged. He even told a few silly jokes that had our children laughing. We would definitely recommend his services to others.

I would strongly recommend Charlie construction for their services. I hired them for some painting and flooring work and the job was done perfectly. The quality and timeliness was much appreciated. In addition, they also took some time to help me fix some small issues with my bathroom which was even outside the scope of the project. I would love to hire them again and recommend them to my friends.

I recently used MRG enterprise, and cannot tell how highly I recommend for any level of remodeling or rennovation jobs. I personally was in touch with Chris through out the process of my renovation of my kitchen and bathroom. He was extremely efficient, honest and helpful. I have worked with other contractors before and always felt taken advantage until I met Chris. Although I knew I wanted to go with MRG, I wanted to see the other quotes out there. They beat the prices each and everytime which made me so happy to finally see an honest contractor. Also another important factor is their efficiency. I only had a 6 week window and they were able to pull it through for me without any issues. I will use MRG for my upcoming project they we're amazing and very happy with all their work.

My roof developed leaks around the 2 skylights. I had one company come evaluate things and was told I needed to replace my entire roof, which was only 10 years old. Didn't even go up there to take a look what was going on. Was given a long sales pitch. Needless to say, I wasn't all that impressed. Wisebuild Construction was recommended to me by a family friend and I decided to try them out. David was extremely responsive and offered to come right away to evaluate things. To my relief he told me I didn't need a new roof. He said, sure, that would be the easy thing to do and would be a way to make money but he didn't want to offer me something I definitely didn't need, especially since the cause of the leak is clear. That said, above all else, he was a super nice guy and a gentleman. I knew I found the right professional for the job. When it came time to do the work, he worked around my schedule and a few weeks of bad weather to fit me in. He re-inspected the problem areas, confirmed the problem and fixed it all up. VERY professional. Super nice guy. On top of that, he followed things up by contacting me several times when it rained to check up on the work. Impressive service. The leak has been stopped and I am an extremely happy owner! I've dealt with many construction related companies in the past. I can say with utmost confidence that dealing with David Wisebuild Construction has been the most pleasant one so far. I highly recommend them for all your roofing needs!

Originally went with ADL Demolition Services suggested by Thumbtack. Spoke to Dan, set up two appointments and he was a no show for both with no calls to cancel. He no longer returns my calls. Very disappointing. Went with Mike at Capital Waste Recycling also through Thumbtack. He showed on time and dismantled and removed my pool quickly and professionally. Great service, five star. Would use him again and recommend him to all. He came with Bill who did the bulk of the work. Bill worked hard and had to use a small front loader to remove the mud filled liner. He did a great job. Completely satisfied.

I have a 6-story facade that had cracked, as a result of hurricane sandy, the roof had leaked, getting into the house and damaging everything. Water dripped from the gutter seeped into the walls and caused heavy damages. The walls were damaged with mold getting inside, with peeling paint from the facade. We needed to re-do the brownstone and fix all the damages. within many quotes, high tech was within my budget. Up and foremost, the roof was re-layered to prevent any more damages. The facade was chipped off (about 2 inches) from the wall applied portland cement and scratch coat. There were many details missing from the window sills and facade that High tech handcrafted and restored. Shaiful explained to me that it would be best if the cornice would be painted, and restored with all details and design before applying the final-coat brownstone. He stated for best results the facade should dry and cure, the longer the drying process the optimal the results. After the drying process, they did the final-coat, the cornice looked great, and all the designs were handcurved. The walls, inside of the house, the sheet-trock was removed, patched, and new insulation placed with new sheetrock. With such a major project on-going, I had a wonderful experience!

Replaced our original 8 Ft sliding glass door. Installed a new Anderson model. Job was done perfectly and the clean up was excellent. The second time I called him he replaced original picture window with a new Anderson model. That job was done perfectly also, excellent clean up as well. He also changes the storm door, and rear door of our house on the same day, another excellent job. Our overall experience with Aaron Orlando could not have been better! His work is top notch, and he is a total professional. He always arrived on time, and was always very courteous. I have scheduled him for another job in the coming weeks. We've been in or house for 30 years, and have called many repair men. He is, by far, the best we have ever had. I highly recommend calling Aaron Orlando to anyone in need of any home repairs or improvements. I guarantee you will be glad you did.

Brett and team were there every morning (despite the bad weather). There was very noticeable progress every day. When there were choices to be made, I was consulted in every case and presented with clear options. The job was completed early and the work area was left very clean when the job was completed.

Juan and his team did an amazing job with our front porch. He swapped out the weathered wood floor to a composite material. We ordered our materials per Juan’s suggestion and he picked everything up for us. His Calculations of how much we would need were just right, so we did not have any waste! He also scrapped and painted out front porch posts and railings and got them looking fresh and new again. He hauled away all of our old decking materials and kept the projected area neat and clean. Juan took the time to make sure everything was exact and level, even adding extra support at the base of our porch posts. As promised at the start of our project, Juan was in and out in 2 days! We will definitely call Juan for future projects on our home.

Joel was very responsible and polite. I wantd to hire him to replace my back door, but he said it was not necessary. He remedied the draft coming from the door with new weather stripping and a draft guard. I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for someone who is honest and reliable.

Justin refurbished our pagoda. He esearched what paint and proceedure would work best. We supplied the paint and he did the rest. Removed hundreds of staples bc my husband had enclosed it with plastic, sanded down years of weathered paint and painted every inch if it to give it that right from the store look. I like to do work like this myself, but there is no way I could have done it so beautifully and quickly as Justin did! Will hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
